Here's the story from Seb Hassett

  Quote

JUST a week after Sydney FC managed to keep Alessandro Del Piero for a second season, Western Sydney Wanderers have landed their own coup by securing Shinji Ono for the 2013-14 season.

The 33-year-old took time to find his stride after arriving but has since emerged as one of the best imports to ever play in the A-League.

He has also been elevated to cult status among Wanderers' fans, who have taken to the former Feyenoord star for his sublime technique and nous around goal.

Ono's new deal has also earned him a significant pay-rise, with next year's contract worth closer to $750,000 – significantly more than his first-year deal of $600,000.

The deal will be announced on Monday by the Wanderers, who have been in discussions with their star man for the past two months. While Ono hasn't played for the Japanese national side since 2008 after 10 years of service, picking up 56 caps during his stint, he clearly has many years left at the elite level.

He was heavily courted by ambitious Chinese club Shenzhen Ruby, who were known to be offering well over double what Ono was earning in his first season at the A-League's newest club.

However, Ono has settled in Australia. He lives in the western suburbs, close to Parramatta Stadium – no doubt adding to the fans' connection with the midfielder – and seems happy despite his family staying behind in Tokyo

I'm still not 100% convinced that Hassett's story is on the money, but if any cashed up Chinese club was offering big bickies for Shinji I'd think he'd be very wary because the CSL has bugger all real quality in terms of supporters and teams, plus at the moment there's a lot of political hate being thrown at the Japanese overall from the government run media. It'd be a no brainer to accept less money in a better team and league environment where fans think you're the best thing since sliced bread and not worry about any anti-Japanese racism bullshit

he will sign garantee just all about 3rd party payments to be finalisd on his contract as being a new club tales time to extort sponsors to pay his extra salary.he has shown his loyalty and is a man of his word its great to see that his heart id with the wanderers and choosing to stay for half of what he is being offered

Got nothing to do with 3rd party deals or money. That was decided months ago. He has agreed to terms there.

He wants to spend an extra month in Japan during off season. Wanderers are pushing for him to be back the first day of Pre season. I'm sure there will be a compromise

i think that hes worth every cent, hopefully someone has some marketing brains and find a way to market the wanderers and the a league in japan, like delpiero and italians, we should be trying to get more fans by attracting japanese people to follow the wanderers.

also trying to find ways of selling wanderers ono jerseys in japan and increasing international exposure

There's a surprising number of Japanese fans who come to our games for Shinji. I've got Shinji 21 on the back of my jersey an on more than one occasion I've had Japanese people come up to me to talk about him or ask where they can get Shinji on the back of their jerseys.

I saw before the game against Heart something like 20 or more shirts being done with Shinji's name for some Japanese fans at Fortress Wanderland. I suspect him, NTS and Mooy might be the most popular jersey names...

if you read into the quote, i think hes refering to asian champions league when he says that we can achieve more next season,
the chinese club that was chasing him, they probably werent going to play champions league
