Yep, thought the same thing. Particularly with the dramatically reduced cap next year. Wouldn't be surprised to see him leave (even if currently contracted).

@Taurus has suggested that there will be cap concessions for those players that are outside the new player pay arrangements.

Foreign players didn't get paid at all when the league was shut down (like the Australian players) but also weren't entitled to any Government assistance (which Australian players were entitled too), he has every right to leave. I don't work for free, and I could imagine trying to survive in a foreign country with no income or support network would be daunting (hence why most, if not all? our foreign players went home).

let’s not forget that these players are taking a massive pay cut for the remaining months of the season. Yes they’ve been paid for 3/4 of the season but they’ve got nothing since the season stopped.

To be honest, his contract is technically void. He doesn’t need to come back at all. It’s a shame we lost him but totally understand his position especially now with the way the virus has spread.

I’m surprised more haven’t left, he’s been asked to stay on the other side of world to play a bunch of games during a pandemic for less money than agreed after not being paid for months, he’s every right to say no

Never said he didn't, I said I understand his situation and respect his decision. I feel some players just show more commitment than others. I know some players were willing to finish the season without pay, they just wanted to finish it with the lads and make the 6.

7 weeks from "so good to see Danial Lopar back" to "we have today confirmed the departure of goalkeeper Daniel Lopar".

Make no mistake...I think this is a MASSIVE loss to our club. His kind of leadership and experience is hard to replace...plus he was a bloody fine keeper, gave confidence to the defense in front and the derby win first up at Bankwest was pretty much down to him....

Vedran back...o my dear god...

I had wiped him from my memory .. the loss of Lopar is bad enough, it's like being on the end of a relegation 6 pointer isn't it

our club really sucks, one of the few players who actually did something last season

Imagine flying halfway across the world, quarantining for two weeks - only to not play for us the coming season...?  :unknw:

Why bother coming back at all?

So the club can't cancel your contract.

i think we are only doing it because we are fighting with macarthur fc for the worst run club in sydney title and thought that would give us the advantage

"The same situation with Bernie. People say people have got contracts, but there's always a reason why a player leaves - like I said with my No.1 goalkeeper (Sweden's Daniel Lopar who left for family reasons)."

Bad form SBS' TWG....

Lopar has failed in court:

The NSW Supreme Court ruling is here if anyone is interested.

The short version is Football Australia had an agreed process for arbitration, but didn’t follow their own process so the court ruled the arbitration decision was invalid. Technically there was no ruling on whether the club actually owed Lopar the money, just that the original decision was made incorrectly.

I wonder whether Lopar could sue FA for not following their own process and putting him out $400k plus court costs.

At [6]: "The Club is a football club that competes in the Hyundai A-League National Football Competition"

I miss Hyundai :(

Also interesting to see what Lopar's salary was at [9] and [10]. Lastly, nice to see the club puts their money where their mouth is. Turner Freeman Lawyers are the 'official legal partner of WSW' - no surprises who represented the club at court then

He came in at 170k for 1 year, then got a 2 year extension at 318k per year. Then Covid happened and all the players got stood down (but some clubs continued to pay the players & staff, but not WSW).

They agreed to reduce the 2nd contract down to 280k for the first season, which was the 25% reduction every player agreed to.

Then the clubs forced the players to accept a second reduction in contract by another 15%, while Lopar said he disagreed and refused to accept this.

So the FA comes along and screws up their dispute resolution process, making the entire thing pointless.

Another glorious FFA bureaucratic stuff up and another example of WSW's owners not doing their due diligence with regards to player contracts, and the club then used the loophole that the dispute resolution process was irrelevant, apparently without bothering to say anything about it during the process to begin with.
