  • Wanderers Sale Confirmed

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been sold to a consortium lead by Primo Smallgoods owner Paul Lederer, Pirtek founder Peter Duncan, Jefferson Cheng and an un-named fourth party. The new ownership will take over at the start of the new financial year.

The sale has been under negotiations for months finally cleared the final hurdle and will be completed on the 30th of June 2014.

Three of the new owners all have a measure of existing input and connection to the Wanderers. Lederer is an existing member of the Wanderers boardroom, Duncan's company Pirtek recently purchased the naming rights for Parramatta Stadium, and Cheng is a director of the International Strikers & Goalkeeper academies, who are high level corporate partners for the Wanderers in this current season.

The FFA began the process of selling the club in June 2013, by appointing UBS to managed the sale of the club. Negotiations were hard fought, with the consortium sticking to their guns on the length of the license (clubs licenses in the A-League are not perpetual and must be renewed) and a reduction in sale price from the FFA's preferred mark of $15 million down to a figure less than $12 million.

With the club tipped to come close to a break-even or even a profit this season, it is unlikely the new owners will have to do much if any cost-cutting should they want to achieve a profit in their first season of ownership.

Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman is rumoured to be leaving the club to take over Melbourne Victory at the end of the season and may need to be replaced. Assistant Manager Ante Milicic is another member of the current staff who is confirmed to be leaving, with ex-Sydney FC manager Ian Crook rumoured to have agreed to take on the role next season.

The new owners will have roughly a month to come to grips with their new ownership before the pre-season starts in earnest. As yet no information on any future investment or any plans the consortium have for the club has come to light.

We need to remember the FFA is a very conservative organisation with very much a "do your mate a favor" philosophy.

This was seen with Melbourne Heart and the failed Sydney Rovers bid where the gig was given to Lowy and Buckleys mate at the time. Other bids were plagiarized and the best bits taken to they could added to their mates bids.

Why was the Rovers was the bid given a green light in such a short period of time when other bids were working on it for years. The Rovers had no backers unlike the other bids. It was a sham. The name was chosen because the leader of the bid liked the name (so much for community consultation).

Similarly some of MH bid was lifted from the Knights attempt to get into the A-league.

You can see how the FFA work. This whole selection with Ange for national coach - with Popa and Arnold considered was all cr@p. The choice was already made. It was the illusion of a process.

The "grant" the FFA got from the previous government was not a "grant". It was another bailout because the FFA was on the verge of bankruptcy.

    Lowy pulled some strings.

And so we came to the Wanderers. The FFA had to change the way it did things. Why? Because if it didn't get the Wanderers right there was a very good chance the A-league would have been finished.

To a large degree they had to change how they treated and viewed fans and engaged the community. They had no choice.

As for fan involvement in ownership of our club.

Well, that was one leap too far for this type of organisation.

If I recall correctly the Rovers had a major asian investor behind them which is why they were given the green light. The GFC hit , Asian backer pulled out and Rovers folded, so you are incorrect.

I don't know much about Heart.

The Rovers had no guaranteed backers.

And to make matters worse for them when the backers of the other bids which failed found out about the FFA's job for its mates attitude which led to Rovers getting the green light, they wanted nothing to do with the new Western Sydney Rovers "franchise"

So we got sold for less than Heart?

It's very simple economics, heart got sold for more because sheikh mansour has all the money in the world, so a few extra million to him doesn't mean anything, but a lot to the seller,

The FFA said that the wanderers have to be sold, so that immediately devalues the price because the FFA want to get it of their hands.

If you have a car and you want to get rid of it, you're not going to sit around and knock back lower offers because you just want to get rid of the car,

Correct. Plus Lowy and Lederer are mates and Lowy has been trying to smooze Lederer into buying the Wanderers for a while now.

    This ^^

Also people are looking into this way too much. The reason no one invested in Rovers is because the a-league looked like it was going to collapse at the time. The crowds were diabolical and Clive Palmer and Nathan Tinkler were causing all sorts of problems and commotion. Also Ian Rowden was not the most reliable person to run it.

The reason the FFA funded a West Sydney team was simply because there were no other investors out there and the league needed 10 teams. The league was a basket case at the time They went to our area because it was the one most likely to succeed. It had history and a ready supporter base there who understood the game. The reason we have investors now is because the league is more stable and we have potential to develop into a big club.

Do not underestimate the amount of bad blood between the FFA and other parties including some investors

The FFA got alot of people offside by the way it conducted its bids including right at the beginning with the Sydney FC, Sydney Blues bids.

The FFA got so desperate at one point that they offered Con Constantine a chance to invest in Western Sydney at the same time/or just after they gave him the ass from the Jets.

Are you suggesting there were other investors out there who did not bid on the club because they got the snub during Rovers days?

    Can you name any?

Is Chris Tanner, the fruit loop who wanted to play all games at home bush one of them?

No I was referring to the other bids (ie Lucas Neil). Tanner was involved at the time the Wanderers came into existence. I cant remember if he was involved in the bidding era which resulted in the Rovers.

From memory he was involved with ANZ stadium as you mentioned but had a falling out (wrongly pt rightly I dont know) with various parties.

I don't care if Lederer is mates with Lowy. I rather he invest in the club then someone completely removed from the scene such as say, the Penrith Panthers.

I don't believe there were any options other than those two so I think the purchasers we ended up with us a very good result. Not sure where all the criticism is coming from.

I find that very difficult to believe, maybe there weren't enough options that fit the FFA's profile they are looking for to invest in football in Australia.

If be very interested if any information was leaked from ups to find out how many buyers were actually interested in purchasing the wanderers. Until that happens anything else is just speculation...

I think that if someone put a bid in at the asking price and was rejected, only to find out that the club was later sold to Lederer & Co at a reduced price, they would go public. Nobody has thus far.

I think word might have got around in the business world that it's dangerous to do business with the FFA. Think of all the heartache some club owners and bids have gone through. Think of the enermies the FFA have made such as Clive Palmer. Think also about the $40m in govt money the FFA blew on the World Cup bid.

Maybe the FFA really had little interest from potential owners and so in the end Lowy had to use his connections to make a sale happen.

If you remember clearly the FFA said that some parts of the sale were non-negotiable like name, colours, stadium etc. I think this would have deterred several investors. If you looked at our year 1 away crowds and home support, there was no way you could not be interested in us (especially over a club like Melbourne Heart). Maybe Man City bought Melbourne Heart over us, but that club is being completely rebranded. No thanks.

In the end Lederer and the other guys know the area better and will keep the club the way it should be. I think it was the obvious choice. It is also good we have more than just one investor.

The fact that club name and colours were non negotiable for us shows just how strong the connection the Wanderers have made to their community is.

The fact that Heart colours, name was negotiable showed just how weak their brand was and how they failed.

If the sale has been done, who's telling the cops to be complete asshats to not just the RBB section but to anyone with any passion at all? And why are trying to bust up active support?

    Good opinion piece.

The new owners do not take control until June 30. So, it is the current club management, which is hired/payed by the FFA.

What I meant was, it's a done deal, so why would they be trying to do anything to the RBB or "troublesome" supporters? It's like mowing the lawns after you've exchanged contracts on the house.

    Also, that SBS article says:

Reports have said the new owners won't take over until 30 June after the A-League season.

But Lowy dismissed those reports, saying they will take over as soon as the negotiations and paperwork are finalised.

IMO The FFA are doing it because they are worried about the potential damage to their image/revenue (as misguided as it is).

I find it hard to believe that the management would really hand over the reins a few weeks out from the finals. Sure, once the comp is finished in April/May, new owners will come in, but I couldn't see much happen before then.
