  • Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas To Quit At End Of Season

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers today announced that CEO John Tsatsimas will leave the club at the conclusion of the A-League season.

Tsatsimas advised the Wanderers board that he would step down from the position he has held with the club since July 2014, due to "personal immediate challenges".

While his time in charge of the club began with roaring success built upon the back of the early Tony Popovic era, including the memorable 2014 Asian Champions League victory, his tenure since 2016 is marked with ongoing failure in both the Men's and Women's competitions, alienating high profile former players & staff, and a revolving door of head coaches.

No successor has been named at this time. One obvious candidate to pursue would be current Perth Glory CEO Tony Pignata, who helped spearhead the post-Farina era rebuild of Sydney FC that turned them into a perennial Championship contender. A more left field option would be to bring current Central Coast Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp, who was the General Manager for the commercial & consumer products section of the Wanderers before leaving to run the Mariners.

Whoever gets the job will have a significant challenge on their hands, requiring them to rebuild the shattered football department to bring back success on the pitch, while maintaining and improving the off-field part of the club that funds the team. The club is currently in the midst of another failure of a season, with the Women's team only goal being avoiding finishing in last, and the Men's team, having already sacked the head coach once this season, has seen little evidence of a Mark Rudan revival as they languish in 9th place with only 3 wins from 13 matches this season.

That’s big - change starts at the top

We’ve been **** for years but is this one (big) scalp enough? I’m not close enough to the internal politics to know but let us hope

This is the best WSW related news in years.

Huge opportunity to turn everything around now, and get us back to the glory days.

Shaun worked with and had some insights into the RBB, so for that alone he's my pick.

Not sure if TP worked with or against the cove, but he certainly had some success there.... (specially with those talented accountants of theirs)

Lederer has nowhere to hide now

players, coaches and finally CEO all gone next year if we are still a shambles the only place left to look will be the mirror!

time for the Big Bozza to come in haha

JT going is the best thing for years.  Clearly with Rudan under the pump there was nowhere for JT to go.  All we need now is for Costello to go.  I hope they can recruit a football CEO and not another KPI driven suit.  Hopefully a change of owner will follow now and wsw won’t be used to merely write off other Lederer company tax losses.

His time there started out very rocky. He joined in June 2012 and bought out Del Piero for 12/13 and 13/14 but SFC were in 7th place after 18 games which is when the Cove had their infamous Cyrillic banner walkout and where Farina got a drink poured on him from one of the fans. But they improved to reach the finals then lose in week 1 to the Victory and Farina got axed.

Which saw them bring in Arnold, he had a good first year, which earned the club credit for a bad second year, and the 3rd year was 16/17 where they ran away with everything but the FFA Cup and Pignata left to eventually join Perth.

I don’t think Costello will be resigning now.
The new CEO will come in and decide who is staying and who is going.

This bit in bold. Great if thay have a business head but we need a CEO with a football brain and the heart of a supporter Or if not, smart enough to see the gap and to bring in a director of football

Totally agree. We need a CEO that can re-engage the active support and also bring in a Football Technical Director who can handle the onfield recruitment of players and coaches.  A person similar to Han Berger when he oversaw this role at Sydney FC with some success.

    Yep this.

But... a slither of hope. When stuff like this happens - new person comes in, and everyone is lining up to tell them how it is. Here's hoping now JT is going Costello starts to realise everyone is going to be lining up to drop him in it and he leaves before being made the fall guy by new management. I mean, I only have a collection of anecdotal stuff (plus what we witness on the pitch), but I should think he has a lot to answer for. Trouble is with these types they are the last people to sense this kind of stuff. But you never know.

If JT's reasons were so immediately personal why the **** doesn't he just **** off now though is the only thing. Let the rebuild start straight away, why prolong the ******* agony.

Because now, new person is coming in offseason and will need time to get the lay of the land. That means things lean towards Rudan staying (which I don't want personally), or, a late decision leaving new manager with not as much time to try to build.

Even in going JT is ******* us around, in other words. **** off buddy. Enjoy your ******* payout.

We've just lost a football CEO. The club will be hard pressed to find anyone who is more dedicated to WSW than JT. I know that man enough to make that statement.

Yeah I almost think the KPI suit type for CEO - as long as they get someone good to run the entire football operations and have an open ear for footballing matters (including fandom).

Mate, we see eye to eye on almost everything, and I say this with respect to his efforts, however absolutely nothing has been achieved on the park. He may be a fan of the game, and of the club, but we've heard enough from ex players (and ex staff I personally know) to be assured that JT was far from the right guy going forward.

    - No results
    - Multiple channels reporting piss poor culture
    - Parents removing players
    - Club legends coming and going in under a year (one went to work in corporate sales he hated it there so much)

This list could go on but what's the point

That said, we may struggle to find a winner on the next CEO too. Who knows. But what we shouldn't forget is that our owner called us and ex players "outside noise". I personally will not be forgetting that any time soon...

JT might be a football CEO but he's been proven to not be a very good one, and Lederer & the rest of the clowns who own the club aren't a very good board either.

The previous four seasons we're the only club to not have made the finals series at least once. Every other team has at least managed to improve itself at least once to an above average level in the A-League.

We've gone 7th to 8th to 9th to 8th and right now we're in last on points per game.

Firstly, this is the best news I've heard in 6 years of our football failure and the nonsense us fans have had to put up with over this period of time. Good riddance JT. There is nothing positive I can say about your tenure at our club. I'm still waiting for my membership pack from 2018-2019 season.

I just hope that the first two things any new CEO does are:

    1. Re-engage fans in a big way. Particularly the RBB. Cheap tickets. TIFO'S again. Fake smoke if we have to. I don't care what it takes but just get fans back to games and just get the atmosphere rocking again. FFS, we have a safe standing area specifically built into the stadium for us and it's hardly been used. It should be chocka's.

    2. Appoint a director of football. A smart one who understands our club, and our culture (as short lived as it may be, but it's relevant). I want to see more La Rocca's and Polenz's and Alberto's playing for us, not Saba's or Adeleke's or dozen's of other failures. Players who will bleed for our club. If anyone wants any more evidence than this, just look at our starting lineups when we won the ACL.

I cannot but otherwise think that Mark Rudan has had a huge say in this. His passion, emotion and ultimately, disappointment and anger in his press conference after Wednesday night's loss to the Jets spoke volumes. It was clear he wanted change. Maybe his frustration extended further than just his frustration with lazy players.

Unlike Carl, and his weekly pretend rants about passion, I'm convinced Rudan gets it.

Have we not all been calling for a local, rather than these prima donna overseas coaches who just do not understand Western Sydney?

Well, despite my initial hesitation, I think Rudan might be just what we needed.

I wouldn't have wanted to be a Petratos or Antonis or many others at training this week. There's only a few like Troisi and Rodwell who should feel safe at this stage.

    Today is a happy day.

I look forward to the coming off season and next season. Feels like a complete club rebuild could happen. Exciting times.

Lederer is the chairman of the board of directors. The guys who give direction.

JT is the chief executive officer, the guy who executes whatever directive come from upstairs.

One can argue the style how JT approached the CEO role, but the direction came and comes from Lederer.

And in my view, the chairman is too close to the action.

    And?

You've been very critical of others in our organisation in the past. I'm also sure no one has ever doubted JT's actual dedication to his job and to the WSW's. It has always been clear that he was fully committed to his position and the Wanderers.

He's just been really **** at it. Today is a good day.

CEO sets the culture by how they lead, he has failed dismally.

It would be good for the new CEO to hold some forums to listen to fans and members

The club recorded all the ones we've had before, they could just rewatch them, it's not like much has changed from what the fans want.

It’d be a good opportunity for the new CEO to extend the olive branch

Or at least send out extensive member surveys? That might get more useful opinions and a broader cross-section?

Finally some significant change...at the moment all I can say is you F.U.C.K.I.N.G BEAUTY.

    Should go now though.

Yep. Just delays everything. I suppose he needs time to say goodbye to everyone at the club and things, after all, that's the only thing the club is is those staff; the rest is outside noise.

In other news Costello is rumoured to be going too..... at the end of the season as well.

Seriously, if there was real love for the club he'd recognise the need to get moving so the broom can come in and have enough time to build. Staying on is just ******* us over for next season.
