  • Popovic Abandons WSW On Brink Of Season

    mack

Tony Popovic has dramatically exited the Western Sydney Wanderers a mere week out from the opening of the 2017/18 A-League Season

Reports have indicated that Popovic received & accepted a shock offer from Turkish side Karabukspor, a  inconsistent, occasionally relegated side who have gone through coach after coach in the past 5 years. His tenure at the Wanderers resulted in the club becoming the first ever Australian winners of the Asian Champions League, while domestically his output was less than expected after he failed to add to the single A-League Premiership the club won in their inaugural season.

After rejecting multiple offers from clubs in England & China after winning the Asian Champions league, he has finally accepted what appears to be a quite mediocre club for his first major opportunity overseas. The awful timing sees the Wanderers scrambling to find a replacement manager to take charge of the Round 1 fixture against Perth Glory.

One minor benefit for whoever the new coach will be is that unlike previous seasons, the Wanderers recruited well & early, putting together a strong squad with all 5 foreign spots filled early into pre-season. The benefits have shown as the Wanderers have made their way into the FFA Cup semi-finals and have been touted as a top 4, if not top 2, squad in the A-League.

It is likely that Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer & CEO John Tsatsimas has already potentially scouted new staff as Popovic's contract was expiring at the end of the season, and the obvious targets include Ante Milicic, currently an assist with the Australian National Team, Josep Gombau, who is in charge of the Australian U23/Olympic team. Should the club want to look to promote coach from the NPL they could seek out the services of Mark Rudan, Chris Taylor from South Melbourne, or Mark Crittenden from Blacktown City. Ian Crook will run the club in a caretaker fashion until an appointment is made.

Ultimately the club will need to move forward quickly from the "Popovic Era", find a coach that can bring quick success to a club that has not won a title for the past 3 seasons. Popovic's style was highly authoritarian, and said to be total control over the football side of the club. It will be an adjustment for the players & staff regardless of who takes over the role, and whoever wins the job will have high expectations from day one.

I wouldn't be shocked if Popa has decided to use this as a leap frog into Europe, join this rando club in the middle of nowhere in Turkey, wait until Christmas and find a new bigger club in December/January when most clubs start sacking under-performing managers.

    No **** Sherlock!

He pretty much said in his press conference that this was his leap frog opportunity to get into Europe.

Good luck to him....but he is joining an underperforming team, he will need some quick victories otherwise he will be the one without a job

Ante Milicic is residing in Croatia atm.

Gombau appears the leading candidate for the role atm.

    Re - the players & Popa's departure

They read it the same time you did . Popa got the initial interest midweek and got the offer around 10pm last night

Farewell Popa, great ambassador of football in Australia. I really cant believe how people are smashing him on social media..Piss ants..

    Thanks again Popa

I think it's more about the suddeness than anything else.

I'll put my hand up and say I thought that Popovic, while having done an outstanding job in establishing the club it was time for him to move on at the end of last season.and I said so six months ago. I don't mean any disrespect to him in any way as he will always be remembered as a legend of the club for the AFC Championship plus the premiership the club won early in it's first years, and he should be given the thanks and well wishes for his new career and club.

    Thanks Popa & good luck.

Then again he might be a great fit. Every first team coach has to get a chance at some stage. This guy's pedigree is second to none and deserves a shot. Plus he knows the club and the system in place. This close to the season it would be silly not to consider him a strong candidate. You do realise with his background he could also walk into quite a number of 1st team coaching roles. Ex Barcelona, ex-Malaga, we also poached him from a job he was going for at PSG. He accepted us, we are lucky to have him. He is more than qualified.

I wasn't ragging on the guy at all. Point is, we have no idea, I'm trying to temper the expectations of some that have called for him to be promoted.

Being a good coach has as much to do with personality as it does qualifications.

All the best to Popa on his journey to Europe, will be watching closely on beIN Sports to see how things go.
Popa's drive and ambition has taken this club to Asian Champions League glory, and for that I will be eternally grateful.
I wish Popa all the same and more abroad.

I think there are plenty of people (me included) who have grown very used to seeing Popa in red and black and patrolling the manager's box with his little black book. He has been the one constant we've experienced in the club staff and management from day one, and whilst many of us have at times questioned his tactics or demeanour at heart he has been a familiar focus for fans to project their energies, ideas, passion, hate, love etc on.

So yes, some people will react badly because, like being told a relationship is over or someone has died it has shocked and stunned them, thrown some WSW folk into unknown territory emotionally.

However there is a core of our supporter base who almost always bar up and spurt love juice at an opportunity to bitch and whine about our club, and it's not just limited to Popa. These masochists love exulting in their own inadequacies by bemoaning anything done by the club that doesn't fit their 'vision'. The same types who assemble en masse at a club forum and whine incessantly because they feel that their football fantasies matter more than the bottom line of the club or the experiences of other members. These are the types who are going to make the most irrelevant and bitter noise about Popa leaving.

Popa has done what he has done, lets build a Mark Bridge and get over it...

Players not told by Popa himself before all this broke is a real shitter.

Please not Ian Crook in as temp....that guy is a born head coach looser.

Couldn't agree more, I'm shocked that at the time of the press conference, Popa hadn't spoken to the players. That's ridiculous.

If Popovic got the offer at 10pm last night, I really doubt that Carrasco, Foxe and Kalac have all signed on so quickly.  I know Popovic had a "get out" clause in his contract but I would be staggered if all of the others had the same thing as well.  Doesn't quite add up.

We love this game and we love it with passion but there is the other side of the story. Football in the big league is a business (a big business) players/coaches love what they do but it is also their job. Same as anyone else they have to look after their career and their family, if an good opportunity comes along I would expect them to take it same as I would so in my career.

Yes the timing wasn't great but the offer wasn't made 2 or 3 months ago it was now and he had to accept NOW.

The way I interpreted the answer in the press conference, is that there is some negotiation in progress with the rest of the coaching staff.  It may mean some or all may go or stay but if they stay it doesn't mean they will still remain when the new coach is appointed.

    wow I'm in shock

    Crittenden in please

As for the assistant coaches etc surely the new guy will want to bring his own people in so I wouldn't be surprised if they all go.

That's fair enough, all I am saying is If Carrasco is around and I hope he is, he should be one of the leading candidates.

Exactly, if a totally new guy it will be his own  back room staff and all will go, all on the table at the moment. In England they would have a candidates odds list running by now lol Any punts at 1000/1 and the like :D Going to be an interesting few weeks for sure.

Yeah that was the only real slip-up from Popa in the presser I think. You could tell from the way he said it that it didn't just happen overnight. I got the sense that he was weighing it up for a few days at least and last night he signed.

But whatever. Why bother trying to work out exactly how it went down? He gave us great service, built the club, and left a good squad. Now it's someone else's time.

Yep, time to get on with the season. Can't wait till next w/end 'cause the wait is over and real footy starts.

Well win, lose or  draw, the leaving of the head coach means that this forum will be a hoot all season. ! lol  As Prydz said last season it's pandemonium , Can't wait.

    • Sapsfords contract expires at the end of the season. It's possible especially if he keeps regularly playing the A-League that he won't play NPL, either because the club doesn't want to load him too much/have elevated him fully to the first team or if we haven't extended him by that point, because he will not want to risk injury while looking for a new contract. Without Blair & Sapsford up front, and no Younis or Bugarija there's a big lack of attacking flair. It worries me if Hammond & Badolato end up being our main attacking weapons. Priestman & Bonetig didn't play much NPL but maybe Bonetig does this year. Simmons could be 0 games or many. I can't see Scicluna playing NPL, Badolato probably plays every game as the club persist with his long contract and hoping he finally shows an improvement or maybe Stajcic gives up and the club get mutual with him or try to offload him to the Jets or Perth. Holliday could play every NPL game with a contract extension or he could get cut before the season starts to go back to Queensland. Hollingdale you would expect plays every game again unless the club elevate him into the first team with a proper contract (is he even on a scholarship?) Jesse Cameron likely another full season. The keepers at NPL level have been a merry-go-round so they could get cut or play every game. BTW did Scicluna ever get his contract extension made public? He was off contract for this season.
    • Make sure you do it on a empty stomach. You'll definitely need the space.
    • I've been twice. It's pretty fancy. You definitely want to be very hungry though so you can get your money's worth. It's pricey.
