  • Paul Lederer Stands Down As Wanderers Chairman

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have today confirmed that Chairman & Part-Owner Paul Lederer has stepped down from his role as Chairman.

Lederer, the 78 year billionaire with a net worth estimated as close to $2 billion has elected to quit as club Chairman over his increasing commitments to his other business interests and for family reasons. He remains at the club as a significant shareholder and director. It is unknown at this stage who will replace him, and if that replacement will come from one of the other three owners Peter Duncan, Jefferson Cheng & David Slade, or from outside the club ownership.

His departure continues a tumultuous off-season for the Wanderers, after finishing outside the finals positions and having head coach Mark Rudan resign for his own personal reasons.

With no chairman, no head coach and a series of players departures with announced arrivals as yet one wonders how the Wanderers will manage to turn the floundering A-League Men's team around in time for kick-off for the rumoured opening round in the middle of October.

What the F&%K is going on at the club ????

Players leaving, tumbleweeds blowing by and crickets chirping. We've lost our captain. There's no coach.

We're on the backfoot it seems ........ yet again.

Mariners owner is saying the central payment from the combined APL finances to the club is going to be lowered by $1 million that might have impacted signings.

Or the club are just waiting for marketing hype purposes.

Usually its our club, this time it isn't every A-league club has released big players from the roster. Easts lost Mak, Victory basically lost their defence and coach.

The reason is the low tv distribution which means lower salary. This is why I am curious why we are not offering pro and Scholarship contracts to the youth. They are a good team so head scratcher

Anyone getting a last days of the NPL vibe

So while on the other threads we were talking NSD

let's say and it isn't beyond the realms of possibility the A League collapses

Paramount 10 pull out or lower their $ even further.

The A League collapses, that couldn't happen in Australian football could it? never has.... Oh

And given that the old NSL efnik clubs have survived multiple attempts to wipe them out and are the clubs looking for any NSD

There is now no A League and all that is left is a bunch of NPL teams saying told you so.

What happens? Maybe they try and from a new National Soccer League sponsored by Philips say.

What A League teams would survive and play on this new Phillips NSL?

Us? Probably someone has to use all those practice pitches

    Sydney and Victory probably would

Coasties can run on that budget

    But

Nix (they are gone no way they can travel on that)

City would CFG bother with a semi pro league?

Roar? They are stuffed as it is

    NSW/Victoria super league + Adelaide.

Roar, Mariners, Macarthur, Jets, Perth, Auckland, Canberra, Nix, WU all die or switch to state NPL.

    Have a league of:

    1. Adelaide United
    2. Melb City
    3. Melb Victory
    4. Sydney FC
    5. WSW
    6. Rockdale
    7. APIA
    8. Marconi
    9. Wollongong
    10. Sydney United
    11. Sydney Olympic
    12. South Melbourne
    13. Melbourne Knights
    14. Oakleigh
    15. Avondale
    16. Preston Lions

That's the core A-League clubs, the confirmed NSD teams and a couple that are likely to enter the NSD later. Could probably add two more teams at some point and those could be a Canberra team or the Jets, Mariners, or if Adelaide don't join. Would be cheaper to run than the A-League as you aren't flying teams to Perth, Brisbane & New Zealand. Would assume they play in winter and the A-League clubs would start investing in their own boutique stadiums.

I'd be down with this, i'd rather watch us play Apia at Leichhardt Oval than the days of us v the Nix in a 80k stadium

I wonder who's been steering the ship these past couple of weeks?? Seems we're drifting more than normal and at a time when there is supposed to be a rigorous process of review happening - and the small, insignificant task of finding a coach and putting a team together.

I wonder if these businessmen run their businesses like this???

I think its kind of rudderless until the chairman position is confirmed.... I mean that's what it looks like. Or they are waiting for 30th June when majority contracts expire.

Seriously the club needs a football director to manage operations even stuff in background is on fire.

A little bit of it but no, the A-League is in a much better position than the NSL was. A-League is in this position because of the previous management at the APL.

That's the most likely thing that will happen, the current deal was $200m over 5 years, which was supposed to be $40m per season but somehow, the APL negotiated and incentivise deal which is by far the worse TV deal in history of any sport in this country. And because of this, the APL got the short end of the tv deal with less cash, and if it's true what Paramount and 10 are preparing to distribute this season is less than half what the APL was supposed to give per season, then I can see the next TV deal is going to be peanuts, the APL might as well broadcast the matches for free on Facebook and Youtube.

If the League does collapse, then it will be back to the drawing boards for the FA to restructure the domestic leagues and the current football pyramid. We could be at least 1 or 2 seasons without professional national competition and the current A-League teams would have to compete in the NPL.

On 22/06/2024 at 2:37 PM, StringerBellend said:

Lets just say they decided to re-launch the new national domestic league runned by the FA with 16 clubs, the FA will have strict financial requirements for operations for the clubs to run as a full-time professional club so they can be as financially  sustainable as possible.

So in this case, I can't see the Central Coast Mariners having the financial capabilities anymore to run as a full-time pro club. Their owner has suggested that the league should be semi-pro and so that they don't have to pay players a full-time wage and 6-figure salaries.

Brisbane Roar are a basket case of a football club, the bakeries have run this club to the ground, and if or when the league collapses, the Roar will be dead too.

Some NSL clubs who think they can be Full-time pro clubs also aren't capable of being full-time pro clubs so that effectively rules out the likes of South Melbourne and Sydney Olympic.

I doubt the Nux and Auckland FC will play in the NZ domestic league as that league is still borderline semi-pro/amateur standards.

So the league will be this.

    1. Perth Glory
    2. Adelaide Utd
    3. Melbourne Victory
    4. Melbourne City
    5. Western Utd
    6. Auckland FC
    7. Wellington Phoenix
    8. Canberra Utd/FC/Union (whatever they will be called)
    9. Wollongong Wolves
    10. Macarthur
    11. WSW
    12. Sydney FC
    13. Newcastle Jets
    14. Gold Coast Utd/Knights
    15. Brisbane City/Strikers
    16. Sunshine Coast

the nux wouldn't be happy about playing back in the NZ domestic league but without the Tv cash I don't see how they or the league can afford the travel costs so surely they are gone.

Auckland too. The other way to look at it is what does the APL get out of having NZ teams? If sky aren't covering the costs than I can't see how it can exist

THe scenario I was thinking is of us that  the A League collapses due to lack of TV $.

    So what next

    - another go at franchise footy? Surely that would be less teams not more?

    - a return of the NSL where no club expects to make money and it is borderline semi pro

In that scenario, why would Bulls exist (might as well just be Sydney United and have done with it)

City, is CFG going to run a community club?
