  • Parramatta Stadium To Be Rebuilt!

    mack

The NSW Government have announced long awaited plans to knock down and rebuild Parramatta Stadium, the home of the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The 30,000 planned capacity is the culmination of the long-term stadium development strategy of the NSW Government, with the political lobbying and jockeying between Parramatta Stadium, the Sydney Football Stadium, ANZ Stadium and Penrith Stadium finally put to rest, at least in terms of the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The first stadium to be built is a new Parramatta Stadium, with the existing stadium demolished to make way for a new 30,000 capacity stadium. A new stadium at Moore Park in the CBD will be between 50,000 and 55,000 seats, and it is likely that ANZ Stadium will be fully rectangularised and may have a retractable roof.

Another potential long-term boom for either the Wanderers or the A-League itself, is a plan for a new stadium in Western Sydney perhaps at Penrith or Liverpool, both locations could provide for matches to be played by the Wanderers, or see the stadium as the home for a new A-League team.

The new Parramatta Stadium is expected to be complete by early 2019 at a cost of approximately $300 million.

I call upon the Wanderers, Football Federation Australia and the NSW Government to ensure that our club is not left out of discussions about the facilities and design at the venue, European style Safe Standing should be a priority at the new stadium to ensure a fully world class venue.

While it is likely the naming rights will be up for sale, I also put forward that the new stadium be called Dino Park.

Not sure why league would care so much. They still turn into seats when they aren't used for standing.

You'd think the fans would love to stand up, beer in hand, like they used to on the hill.

Parra, clap clap clap and ref is a wanker can be so much more effectively projected from a standing position.

Noticed not much mention from the comments on the future design of the stadium

Agreed, you would think standing would be something different even for league fans, more communal, more fun etc..

Also I think the idea that you could essentially increase the stadium capacity from 30k to 32k would appeal to them as well (for no extra cost).

IMO, if we want safe standing, the club will have to pay for it and they will have to be removal ala German clubs for league and UCL.

Eels will always have the dream/ambition to our kind of crowds in the next 5-10 years. Regardless of the odds of attaining these numbers, they are still, going to try; and that will mean they'll want seating in the northern stand. Because as all of us know what a league fan say "why would I come here to stand up, when I can sit on my lounge at home and watch it".

I don't understand why the Eels or their fans would be against safe standing

If they don't want to stand up, you can keep the seats all folded down

    simple

It affects them in zero ways, unless they'll whinge about the different seat design than on the sidelines or it being uncomfortable or whatever

It may be petty, but the great cherry on top was that Western Sydney has been prioritised over the so called mighty East. In laymans terms, ESFC will have to go through a knockdown/rebuild with no stadium while we bask in our beautiful brand new Shoot ***** Arena :xnod:

Will the train station be moved closer to the ground. Will Bay 56 still be 56 and entry through a North Gate. Bodies have been inked and babies named. I have no care for Bairds World Class City inflated ego plans only I want to stay so low behind the posts I still see none of the game.

    Liking the direction lol

Maybe build it in 1960's era Soviet style concrete with large standing terraces, throw in a few intimidating statues of some random blokes outside and we will be good to go  ;)

Hi all, there are so many great ideas and logical opinions about the stadium on here that I think it would be wise to create a group that liases with the club and the design people. After all, it is the members that have been using the existing stadium and they know what works and what doesn't. Remember that the designers will probably have no idea about the needs of an active support group (virtually none existed in Aus before the RBB). Otherwise I think what will be built is an all purpose stadium or worse, a stadium with a focus on the needs of a rugby league audience. I know nothing about this stuff but obviously a lot of you do, get in there and make a little friendly noise!

The price we have to pay for getting the new stadium is detailed below.  The NRL will guarantee the Government a spread of clubs across all 3 venues.  We will get Wests and Penrith as extra tenants.

The $1 billion-plus funding of three stadiums, varying in size from 80,000 at Homebush Bay to up to 55,000 at Moore Park and 30,000 at Parramatta, effectively signals the end of the suburban ground. It is expected that Penrith and Wests Tigers will play matches at the new Parramatta Stadium, along with the Eels, while the Dragons are likely to share the stadium at Moore Park with Sydney Roosters.

Canterbury and South Sydney, tenants at ANZ Stadium, could remain there, while Cronulla and Manly are also likely to be pushed to play home games at one of the three major grounds.

Below is a concept image of ANZ permanently rectangularised with all levels of seating moved in and the rakes of the tiers adjusted accordingly.

The most important question. Will our goal nets be too deep in the new stadium? This must be prioritized, the horror if they just use the goal nets we currently use.

It was the government who said no to safe standing in the original upgrade, they'll be the biggest opposition to it. Traditional RL fans love the idea of standing and watching the game. You look at the popularity of the hills at Leichardt, Brookie, Newcastle, Cograh etc, they're most often the highest populated parts of the ground. With the so called 'death' of the suburban ground, this could be one way to at least keep some sort of tradition.

The biggest problem the government will have with it is that it's not world class because the seats aren't that comfy and there's no where to put your laptop while you're using the wifi to order your 3 course meal. It's gonna be difficult but if it's marketed in the right way, I don't see why the government can't at least consider it.

This might be a really stupid question... but how much difference in there between having fold up seats (as you have at lots of stadia) and safe standing??  I've seen images of it... but...??  There's a rail , is there,  with safe standing??

Fold up seats surely are more convenient when people are moving along already occupied rows.... I'd rather just hop up to let people past as you can do at some places, rather than have them try to squeeze along rows, as happens with the fixed seating.

In steeply raked venues, the fold up seats would almost be preferable as people move along already occupied rows? Can't remember what the seating is like at AAMI.... but I do remember how steep the stands feel from the top rows. Does it have fold up seats?

Even if fixed seats rather than the fold up seats were used elsewhere in the stadium, could the ends have the fold up seats as a compromise, if safe standing wasn't permitted??

And.... in general, does Flytox or anyone else know what types of seating is preferred in steeply raked modern stadia??

    :)  :)

You can fit up to two people in the safe standing rows per seat, whereas the flip seats you can only fit one.

Flip up is better than fixed but not really the same thing as safe standing. The RBB would still have the issues they currently do.

Ahhh got it.   So there's a kind of step between the rails. I knew there was a difference, but not quite sure what else, besides the railing.

    Thanks Carns!

The nominal increase in capacity is 70% if the intermediate step is installed or 40% if it isn't.  The increased capacity requires increased widths of stairs and vomitories which are sized for emergency egress in an 8 minute time frame.
