  • Parramatta Stadium To Be Rebuilt!

    mack

The NSW Government have announced long awaited plans to knock down and rebuild Parramatta Stadium, the home of the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The 30,000 planned capacity is the culmination of the long-term stadium development strategy of the NSW Government, with the political lobbying and jockeying between Parramatta Stadium, the Sydney Football Stadium, ANZ Stadium and Penrith Stadium finally put to rest, at least in terms of the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The first stadium to be built is a new Parramatta Stadium, with the existing stadium demolished to make way for a new 30,000 capacity stadium. A new stadium at Moore Park in the CBD will be between 50,000 and 55,000 seats, and it is likely that ANZ Stadium will be fully rectangularised and may have a retractable roof.

Another potential long-term boom for either the Wanderers or the A-League itself, is a plan for a new stadium in Western Sydney perhaps at Penrith or Liverpool, both locations could provide for matches to be played by the Wanderers, or see the stadium as the home for a new A-League team.

The new Parramatta Stadium is expected to be complete by early 2019 at a cost of approximately $300 million.

I call upon the Wanderers, Football Federation Australia and the NSW Government to ensure that our club is not left out of discussions about the facilities and design at the venue, European style Safe Standing should be a priority at the new stadium to ensure a fully world class venue.

While it is likely the naming rights will be up for sale, I also put forward that the new stadium be called Dino Park.

    Sydney to get stadium makeover

    THE AUSTRALIAN SEPTEMBER 4, 2015 1:57PM

    Mark Coultan

    State political correspondent

NSW Government has announced a $1.6bn plan to rebuild three Sydney stadiums and construct a new indoor arena near the Sydney CDB.

The first project to be built will be a new 30,000 seat Parramatta stadium, which is expected to be home to the Parramatta Eels Rugby League team and the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The plan includes demolishing Allianz stadium at Moore Park and building a new 50-55,000 seat stadium in its place.

ANZ Stadium will also get a makeover, with the seating being brought closer to the ground and possibly a roof being added.

“A global city like Sydney needs world class sporting venues and this investment will ensure fans and sporting teams have the facilities they deserve,†Mr Baird said.

“Our first priority is building a new 30,000 seat stadium at Parramatta on the site of the existing facility, with work to begin as soon as possible and construction expected to be completed by 2019.

“This huge investment in our stadia will boost our capacity to attract big ticket events to NSW, as well as create and support thousands of jobs.â€

Mr Baird said the one caveat was that the sporting codes agreed to provide events to justify the new stadiums.

This puts the heat on the NRL, in particular, to give Sydney major events such as State of Origins matches and to encourage clubs to abandon suburban grounds in favour of the new venues.

The government had already allocated $600m from the proceeds of the electricity privatisation for sporting stadiums.

The Premier did not reveal where the extra $1bn would come from, other than the Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian would provide details in the midyear economic review in December.

The government is working towards buying out the private sector owners of ANZ Stadium and running all three stadiums under one “Supertrust.â€

The Sports Minister Stuart Ayres said NSW needed a mix of contemporary venues of varying sizes to compete against other cities for major events.

“The upgrades are contingent upon final business cases, design work and the NSW Government reaching content agreements with the sporting codes to ensure matches are spread across the stadium network,†Mr Ayres said.

“As part of this package NSW Government is negotiating to acquire leasehold management rights for Stadium Australia. Once this is finalised we will work towards one governing entity for Sydney’s stadia network.â€

FFA welcomes investment in new Parramatta Stadium

Football Federation Australia (CEO) David Gallop has today welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to build a new 30,000 capacity rectangular stadium on the site of the current Parramatta Stadium.

“I commend the Premier Mike Baird and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres for giving priority to the Parramatta project in the government’s sports infrastructure program announced today,†said Gallop.

“This is a great outcome for football and the Western Sydney Wanderers. It demonstrates football’s strength and popularity in the west of Sydney.

“If not for the thousands of Wanderers fans who regularly fill the current Parramatta Stadium, there wouldn’t have been a compelling case for the funding.

“We also welcome the investments to be made in a new rectangular stadium at Moore Park and the redevelopment of ANZ Stadium. These investments will provide much-needed new facilities for football fans and will showcase football’s major events.

“I’m delighted that Sydney FC will get a brand new home for their growing fan base. It’s worth noting that the Sydney derby between Sydney FC and the Wanderers is the biggest annual event at Allianz Stadium.

“It’s important that ANZ Stadium becomes a world-class rectangular stadium with a 70,000-plus capacity to enable Sydney to compete with the likes of Melbourne’s MCG. I’ve been saying that from the outset of this debate. Sydney needs a world-class, major event venue for big Socceroos matches, A-League Grand Finals and big games with European clubs.

“All football fans will congratulate the Baird Government for the commitment to more than $1 billion in investment. Having the right mix of sports and entertainment venues will make a huge difference to Sydney’s stature as one of the world’s great cities.â€

Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas praised the announcement.

“Replacing our now outdated but still much loved venue, Wanderland will be reborn and the opportunity presented to our club, our fans and our region will be huge,†said Tsatsimas.

“It will give us the ability to grow as a Club and sets a platform for a number of opportunities to continue on our path to becoming a globally recognised and respected football club.

“While the transformation and planning for the new stadium in Parramatta takes place there will be a period of displacement that we will have to deal with.

“Over the next few months as we learn more of the Government’s timelines for work to commence on our venue we will consult with our members and supporters to help guide our decision making process on where we will play our matches while Wanderland is under construction.â€

It is expected that construction will begin no earlier than December 2016, meaning the upcoming A-League season won’t be effected by the proposal.
