  • New Parramatta Stadium Revealed

    mack

The winning design for the new Western Sydney Wanderers stadium at Parramatta was revealed today by the NSW Government.

As work begins on the demolition of the new stadium, the 2019 stadium design has been unveiled. With numerous bidders for the work, the Government selected a joint bid between builders Lend Lease, and designer Populous.

Populous are well known in Australia & Asia, having designed the Sydney Olympic Stadium that the Western Sydney Wanderers are currently playing in, as well as stadiums on the Gold Coast, in Melbourne & New Zealand.

Unlike many other stadiums built in Australia, this is a purpose built rectangular stadium, and will have the steepest viewing angles in the country. There will be a single tier home end, while the main grandstand will be built with premium corporate hospital suites.

The new stadium if completed as designed looks like it will be the premier medium sized stadium in the country, and leaving all but a handful of stadiums in the dust. It is expected to be finished in 2019.

Standing in games should be banned. Fair enough when your team creates an exciting moment. But in general play it is not needed. It ruins the view for others and forces everyone to stand. It also what starts fights. Grown men rubbing against each other. That's what this is about lets be honest.

Totally agree. Grown men rubbing against each other is not needed. I really could ruin the view for everyone.

Has anyone chained themselves to a tree or pole yet?

i did but it had nothing to do with the protest

Just ignore them. Nothing is going to happen to the stadium.

lucky this is true, they still irritate me :P

Took the wife and little one for a morning picnic at Parramatta Park yesterday (BTW, that cafe is full of cyclists in their Lycra... what a shocking sight!). Walked around the stadium as Mrs. Gazmon had never been around the back of the western stand... actually a little sad to see things being let go. There was a pile of seats next to a fence, easily accessible if you wanted to grab some. No other seats in the stadium have been removed yet.

But, looking around toward the pool end (which was really busy actually) there are large pumps and tanks that will need to be removed with the stadium, as well as the pools themselves. A massive job. I would be very surprised if we see any major construction finished by end-of-year 2017. Maybe, at best, some supports for stands, but not much more.

I listen to The A-League Podcast and Stuart Ayres actually spoke. Apparently, they are gutting the old Pirtek with items that can re-used. True demolition of the concrete will start in early 2017.

The new stadium is likely to open in June 2019 so lets hope there is a 3 month delay in completion so that we open the new stadium.

If we get safe-standing the Eels will want the first game... *shrugs*

That said, not bothered if they get it first. Who really cares who was there first? We're the ones marrying it, most stadiums regret their first time anyway.

The NRL draw comes out in what, November? So they must start planning a few months before that. Are they going to plan games at a stadium that is due to open the next June, halfway through their season? We'll be lucky if it's open in time for the start of the 2019/20 A-league!

I can't see it being ready mid-year 2019. The Eels won't want to schedule games for there unless it's 100% certain. That could leave the door open for us to have the first match. However, I expect the NRL to try and put a test or representative match as the opener if they can.

I doubt the Eels would be able to move back mid season due to contractual obligations with ANZ

Regardless though, they'll definitely put something on prior to our season. They aren't going to spend all this money and leave it vacant for 3 months, the FOPP and the pool people would be ropable lol

The plan was released and stated early 2019. Not even a few days later Ayres gave an interview saying mid 2019. I don't think they actually know to be honest haha

If it opens mid-year some private promoter will probably try and get us to play a big European team. The Eels will be hoping for a home semi. And we'll have champions league qtr finals after we ask AFC to change venues mid competition. As we will be reigning champs they'll allow it.

Without delays it should take 2-years to build. Based on similar sized projects around the world. Deconstruction won't start until early 2017. That part won't be completed until mid-2017 I'd guess. Just based on the amount of work to do. Add 2 years to that and we're already mid-2019.

Fair enough. I don't mind a small delay - more chance we'll play the first game there but that doesn't really matter to me anyway.

Our first game there will be a cracker regardless.
