  • New Parramatta Stadium Revealed

    mack

The winning design for the new Western Sydney Wanderers stadium at Parramatta was revealed today by the NSW Government.

As work begins on the demolition of the new stadium, the 2019 stadium design has been unveiled. With numerous bidders for the work, the Government selected a joint bid between builders Lend Lease, and designer Populous.

Populous are well known in Australia & Asia, having designed the Sydney Olympic Stadium that the Western Sydney Wanderers are currently playing in, as well as stadiums on the Gold Coast, in Melbourne & New Zealand.

Unlike many other stadiums built in Australia, this is a purpose built rectangular stadium, and will have the steepest viewing angles in the country. There will be a single tier home end, while the main grandstand will be built with premium corporate hospital suites.

The new stadium if completed as designed looks like it will be the premier medium sized stadium in the country, and leaving all but a handful of stadiums in the dust. It is expected to be finished in 2019.

Great post re the "KOP" Wswboro. Note most of the stadiums in the North. It was Lancashire regiments that took care of the butchers bill that day. A unique memorial to the fallen really........

John T has said they're fighting for safe standing. I'm assuming that means it isn't a certainty yet

Safe standing gets the go ahead. Wonder how many bays in reality.

So safe standing is approved!!!  :woah:  :clapping:  :good:

3 years on and my son will almost be a teenager and I reckon he will be wanting to be in the safe standing area. Really happy for the lad that he will get to experience standing on a proper terrace like I did growing up, thankfully without the crumbling concrete and high fences...safe standing area will be so ******* popular, will be rammed every home game. I might even have to consider joining the lad and getting active  :D

This is going to be so awesome and ground breaking for a stadium in Australia. Still can't believe we have safe standing!

Also i needs to be the whole stand behind the goal otherwise what is the point?

The kids were so excited when I showed them the video of the new stadium.

Until they asked 'But where's the pool?'.

Followed by 'Where are we going to have our swimming carnivals?'.

Just tell it to them how it is.... no more swimming carnivals, no more Parramatta pool, its over. I hope that this pool protest thing doesn't go on too long, can't stand the whinging. Just **** off to another pool and stop getting in the way of progress, get the bulldozers revved up and roll on in.....

My kids will get over it. After 2019 we will all forget that there was a pool there.

Has anybody heard if the planned move of the pool to the old Parramatta Golf Club will happen?

From what i have heard Nothing official, but the site of Parramatta Golf Course is the likely new home of Parramatta pools

How many people do you reckon think the "Kop" end will hold? I'm guessing like 8k.

    Don't call it that
lol you know full well there are heaps of stadiums with a Kop.

    And now we're getting one.

    Kop Kop Kop

As well as multiple Kops there was also a time when many 'ends' sang YNWA...

All I've heard is that a replacement pool will be built on the next couple of years. Current one looks a bit dated anyway but the Govt could have done a better job of selling that idea and not piss off the residents.

    From the Parramatta Advertiser:-

Mr Baird was asked about the lack of a public swimming pool — the current pool is due to be demolished as part of the stadium rebuild and a new one could take two years to build.

He told the Advertiser: “We’re aware of the public consensus about the pool closing but it will stay open until at least March this year and we are going to build a new pool as soon as possible.â€

The Lendlease press release states that the capacity will be 1000 people, 1 or 2 bays at most.

2-bays at least I'd say. Each bay, assuming has 24-seats across (fairly standard), goes back roughly 20 rows. That's 480 per bay, so 2 bays sounds about right.

2 bays pfffttttttt, whole of that stand behind the goal or what is the point! Assuming the safe standing is at the 'kop' end then the active will just spill out of a couple of bays of safe standing and you will have bays full of 'unsafe' standing around it.

The biggest issue regarding the new pool is who is going to pay for it? Parramatta council is already pissed that they've put significant funds (millions) into refurbishing the pool on the current site which will now be demolished.

We shouldn't be dismayed about there only being 1k of safe standing. After the stadium is finished and all stakeholders realise how beneficial it is, I'm guessing there will be a greater amount installed

Or once they realise that having such a small safe standing area amongst a greater active area won't work they will increase it, but how about they just do the hard yards now and do it properly first time.

The problem is that it is much harder to do when the stadium is already built. With safe standing already in place, aisle widths, row depths, exits will be appropriately sized.

    Same logic with a 27k + 3k stadium

I watched a video of workers installing them at Celtic Park, it didn't appear to be overly complicated?
Fair enough, was told that it wasn't just a simple case of removing the seats & putting in the rails

Double check with Pablo Bateson on twitter, he was following the safe standing stuff overseas a lot closer than I was

It depends on if the terrace was built to accommodate rail seating / standing. There has been a big push from fans at the Riverside Stadium in the Boro to get safe standing. But it would cost a fortune because the stadium was built as an all seater and the terrace step configuration means that the steps / rake would need a total reconfiguration to accommodate safe standing, at least this is what Boro fans are being told. If the whole of the kop end is built to the same configuration then they should be able to easily rip the seats out and convert to safe standing with rail seats.

If they ever wanted safe standing at Allianz they would need to reconfigure the whole terrace with regards it's steps and rake otherwise wouldn't work there.

Would require them to spend more money now to make it configured for safe standing. Same argument for building in extra capacity into stadium for extra seats.

Wait wasn't it the same argument that those Spotless idiots were using for the RBB that they were going to break the stands?

I would imagine like people have said it's about the rake and then the egress for extra people.

The rake is fixed across the north end it would appear. They wouldn't have a different rake for the safe standing area only, surely.

So then it's about the egress only.

Keep in mind as well they could have safe standing but still only allow numbers that they would allow for fully seated.

Also - we really have only ever had about 2 full bays worth of totally active people in the RBB. We can dream about a whole end with it - and yes it would encourage more people to get active, probably, but yeah. Remember as well that whatever we say the eels are a stakeholder too in this and they were dead set against safe standing at all. I reckon this is a win and as long as the design has the egress sorted - and if you look at it, it looks like they'll be able to just throw open wide areas that go directly out onto the "boulevard" or whatever it's called - there's a good chance for expanding it out if there's a case for it.

The safe standing area will be VERY VERY popular.. nailed on season ticket sellout area the first day on sale....

With the hype and excitement over the new stadium a whole end of safe standing would be sold out for sure, just for the initial novelty of, 1000 standing spaces aint gonna be enough....

Is it completely ridiculous to have interchangeable rail seats and regular seats?

Dont know if its a thing but i realise rail seats lock in and out. But why not during offseason (eels) have seats installed and during our season have the 3 lower middle bays railed up?

If stadiums can build stands that can move and retract surely its simple to have a built in system where rails can be pushed into the ground and then raised and seats removed or something...
