  • Jean-Paul de Marigny Departs Wanderers

    mack

Jean-Paul de Marigny was today left the Western Sydney Wanderers, just 9 months after he ascended to the head coach role following the sacking of Markus Babbel.

The Wanderers released a very short statement today on their website: "Western Sydney Wanderers FC have today parted ways with head coach Jean-Paul de Marigny. The club thanks Jean-Paul for his efforts and wishes him success in the future. The club will make an announcement in the coming days on a replacement coach."

It is unclear at this early stage if the move was a sacking, or if de Marigny left the club of his own accord.

Jean-Paul de Marigny's time at the club did result in a small uplift in the clubs performances, and he was able to keep the Wanderers from losing a Sydney derby this season. His final statistics in charge were 5 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses from 12 games, his best results coming in February as he lead the Wanderers to a 1-0 derby win, after smashing Adelaide United 5-2.

In the post Lockdown period however, the 3-1 loss to Perth and the 5-3 loss to Western United culled the small hopes of playing finals football, and a 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory closed out the season.

The Wanderers have not announced a replacement at this time. Whoever it is will have their work cut out for them, as the club will be dealing with the loss of our best player Mitch Duke, having signed nothing but youth player upgrades at this point in the pre-season and with a massive cut in the salary cap looming.

Wanderers Chairman, at the time of de Marigny's appointment in July said “with JP at the helm and our squad working hard at our fantastic Centre of Football, we eagerly anticipate the return of the Hyundai A-League and watching our group take the steps required to make our many members and fans proud.”

Lederer's words ring hollow with the erstwhile head coach leaving just three months after his 'permanent' appointment.

    Consider

Approaching Harry given his side is running last...

He would bring massive media attention.... arguably good players and he is a former Westie....

I am not saying Harry would be perfect however looking at others mentioned he IMO is their equal if not better.

It’s been like this for three years now this is a minor **** up compared to Popavic going a week before the season with no contingency plan in place, or the move to ANZ and dismantle the squad year

I honestly think that we could have ridden out the Popovic and Spotless issues, if we had for example gotten Rudan or Talay or someone who knew the AL and the club ethos (hard working, etc) and not try to change the culture.

Here is the squad you have for the next year - work with it !!! - then the year after we will see about recruitments.

As much as enjoyed Gambau in Adelaide, we don't share the same DNA.

Overseas coaches without a long term project (3-5 years) usually don't do well.

But it's not just the football - JT failed to work with the RBB and fans in general !!!!

I remember he wasn't supportive of approved smoke and/or confetti (and yet hundreds of kids f%$$#ng do paper planes) at the new stadium launch.

I don't have any inside knowledge but I wouldn't be surprised if Patrick Zwaanswijk gets the job.  Just noticed that he was coach of the year in NPL2 in 2019, has just recently been brought in by someone from within the club.

I have no idea of his coaching methods, if anyone here does I'd like hear your comments.  I'd still prefer Mark Crittenden but we're going to find out fairly quickly from the reporting I've seen.

Wrong Harry. Lets steal Harry Redknapp from the South Coast Mariners.

What would entice A'rry Redknapp...payments in a brown envelope and an Australia bank account in his dogs name...good to go..

With the way the squad may look when we finally get underway we may finally get to see if #NoGrozosNoParty is really up to scratch. From the look of it a lot of the youth have to really put in.

    What a **** show lol.

They expect us to pay membership when there is barely 11 players in our team and no coach.

Too focused in the jersey design but not enough on actual players.

I love the Wanderers and the community but those people running the show is ******* it up.

Joke of a club? Are we even a club??

Yes let’s not crack open any champagne till we see what we get, but JP leaving/ being forced out is not a negative.

I actually give the club management props for realising he was never going to cut it  and acting before the season started - if that’s what happened.

Although this would also beg the question of why he was given a permanent contract before the season ended in the first place.

In the current state of the world and the game this wasn't wanted or planned. They would have stuck with him but circumstances must have quickly changed....

Maybe it’s my new found James Rodriguez inspired optimism, but the club have punted JP is probably a good thing and better to do it now than later

Popa = Moyes - solid got results on a budget

Gumby = Bobby Brownshoes Martinez - all about the philosophy and endless passing around (tantric football) couldnt organise a defence

Babbel = koeman - Big name foreign manager with rich playing history unfortunately a better footballer than manager

JP = Big Sam Alladyce - short term, unpopular and played **** football but for a couple of gritty defensive games

??? = Ancelotti- Sexual football win stuff let the good times roll

    Told you we are Everton

    • Who would like more things to smile at??   - Wanderers (women and men) didn’t lose this weekend, and Sydney FC (women and men) didn’t win this weekend   - Wanderers are higher than Sydney FC on BOTH the women’s and men’s tables.
    • No Mack, that's not what happened. Gombau rolled the dice with his line up for that derby. CB Hamill played RB, RB Risdon played RW, the nominal RW Cejudo played LW. Something like that. Young Scott played CF, Baby Baccus played as sole No 6, young Aspro CB. Santa and Jumpei came off the bench when it was all too late, and Thwaite stayed on the bench.  The game was lost because Gombau had them play a ridiculously high line where our slow CBs where constantly outrun. Had it not been for Snake in goal we could have lost in double digits. The day after that game Gombau had morning tea with Lederer and JT for a serious WTF chat.  The player's revolt came two rounds later, after the 0:4 in Newcastle. Or rather: that's when Gimbau lost the locker room. That game was so bad and the canyon between coach and assistant coach so big that Hayden Foxe resigned after the game. Maybe there was or is a coach somewhere in Gombau. Maybe he was just misunderstood. Maybe he could have turned wsw into Australia's answer to Barca. I very much doubt it, and we'll never know. What we do know is that he pissed off Cornflakes so much that he left mid season. Gombau was urged to sign a replacement, and he refused! And so for the final game of the season he fielded Hamill and Clisby (!) as CBs, and left Thwaite on the bench. If anyone needs reminding, wsw lost the game 2:3 and where out of the finals. By the time the post season awards night happened, Gombau had pissed off club officials so much that he didn't sit with them on the same table, and the only player who was seen talking to him that night was his old mate from Adelaide, Carrusca. The next day this: "Following a review of the season the decision has been made to appoint a new head coach for the 2018/19 season and beyond. The Wanderers would like to thank Josep for his time with the club." They may as well have written "**** off". Maybe the club should have done a bit of thinking when FFA refused to release Ante Milicic but we're happy to let Gombau go to WSW, and even continued to pay a slice of his salary.   Anyway. The biggest issue are not the coaches, but how we arrive with them. In the absence of a DoS it was the chairman who made the final decision. Gorman picked Popa, Lederer Gombau, Babbel and CR, JT picked Rudan, and Stajcic is Cheng's choice.  That's what needs to change.
