  • Alen Stajcic Appointed Wanderers Head Coach

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers announced today that the club has a new head coach, former Central Coast Mariners, Perth Glory and Matildas boss Alen Stajcic.

Stajcic take overs in the wake of Marko Rudan leaving the club on the 16th of May, and the backroom palace intrigue which resulted in long standing Chairman & high profile club co-owner Paul Lederer stepping down from the Chairman role.

The move for Stajcic and the removal of Lederer was orchestrated by co-owner Jefferson Cheng. Cheng, who along with Glenn Duncan and David Slade, have been the less visible element of the ownership consortium since they bought the club from Football Federation Australia in 2014. The triumvirate out-voted Lederer and his desire to bring in an overseas coach who was rumoured to be Dutchman Ruud Brood.

Stajcic was headed for the exit at Perth Glory from the moment that club was sold to Ross Pelligra earlier this year, with the Glory ending the season in dead last despite the efforts of A-League Golden Boot winner Adam Taggart and his 20 goals, and his tenure was officially terminated on the 25th of June. Stajcic had a three year stint in charge of the Central Coast Mariners after leaving the Matildas head coach role in controversial fashion. After a short interim period in the 2018/19 A-League season, he finished in last with the Mariners in 2019/20 and then 3rd in 2020/21 before quitting in the off-season due to an apparent split with Mariners ownership over the direction & funding of the club & playing group.

The appointment of a manager from the team who finished last will raise eyebrows with club supporters, with the explanation coming from Cheng's involvement with the Philippines women's national football team. Cheng had been a sponsor and administrator for the team from 2017 until his very recent resignation. That administrative role that lead to Stajcic being appointed as the head coach of the Philippine women's team in 2021, where he lead the team to qualification for the 2023 Women's World Cup with their semi-final finish at the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup, winning the 2022 AFF Women's Championship and ending his tenure with a fighting group stage exit from Group A at the World Cup in New Zealand.

Stajcic currently has a combined 28% win-rate from his time in Perth and Gosford and a staggering negative 56 goal difference. Wanderers fans will be hoping that his time at the club will be more reflective of his 2020-21 season with the Mariners, where he won 12, drew 6 and lost 9, hopefully with a better finals run than their first week, extra time 2-0 exit to Macarthur FC who were playing a man down for almost an hour. With a new coach and new chairman coming onto the scene it is likely that more staff & players will leave the club in the weeks before pre-season opens with another new dawn for a club that has been struggling for any kind of consistency in the past decade.

The Wanderers next competitive match is the Australia Cup Round of 32 match against Brisbane City, in Brisbane at Spencer Park on Wednesday the 31st of July with kick-off at 7:30pm. The A-League season is set to kick-off in October.

One of two things will happen: we will somehow manage to finish 14th; or we will make it to the grand final and the league will fold before it is held.

You can bank on it. We are cursed. We don’t need a coach or a marquee we need a witch doctor.

It’s obvious to all we used up our life time supply of good fortune in that ACL second leg final. This is the price.

Not sure which thread to put this in, but Nick Montgomery >>>> Spurs to work with Ange.

I would have been frustrated if we missed out on him to another A League Club. But in this case, I can accept his decision.

Should we start a crowdfund to get John Safran to find the Saudi version of a witch doctor to lift the curse?

If there is a witch Doctor in Saudi Arabia, they're most likely would have been ded already.

As for Staj, I welcome his appointment to our club. Our off season has now got a little bit interesting, we will see how we go in the Australia Cup match against Brisbane Strikers next month

Who do we have on the books to play the Cup game? Seems we're very thin in the backline.

Depends. If it’s the official list we still have plenty of players. If all the rumours are true we’ll be playing those children who come on during the half time break.

In the Disney film ‘Invincible’ the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles holds on open try-out to generate excitement among fans about an underperforming team.

This is what Staj should do.

He turned the Mariners around, he has a good eye for youth and how to develop them.

He is IMO an excellent choice if you want to rebuild the club, if you are looking for instant results he is a bad choice.

You have been around WSF enough to know that only instant results will do. :D

Some of them can at least trap and pass something that not all of our players have been successful with

Has he been signed only for the one year?

We have tonight confirmed the appointment of Alen Stajcic as the club's Isuzu UTE A-League head coach for the upcoming season.

left footed full back here. Been 20+ years since my heyday, when I terrorised the left wing in the regular punks vs skins battle at sydney park on picnic days. Agricultural? Put it this way; I stopped playing football properly at age 14/15 to take up aussie rules at the suggestion of my coach after I (yet again) hacked out a winger who skinned me, he suggested it might better suit my temperament.

It would appear so. Which is good, in one way - we aren't quite knee-jerking like we have in the past - but, out of all the managers we've had, this one seems more likely to work if given time and support.

Tbh..I became a CB because I was always running late / last out the sheds as a kid and no ****er wanted to be there. Although a teacher did ask me to go in goal once but I told him to **** off and went to my usual position. Bastard sent me back to the sheds for the duration...:D And got a mouthful on showing  respect afterwards

A lot of water has flown down Parramatta river since the S4 semi against the Roar.

Popa's final year with Pinatares, Jumpei, Borda, 1 year of Gombau, 2 years of Babbel and JPdM, 1.5 seasons of bleeding ears courtesy of CR, and 2.5 seasons of Rudan's sydney united crew. Eight years of trains planes and automobiles, and the good bad and the ugly - the bar is rather low.

    Welcome Alen, and good luck.

He'll need it, a one year gig.

So basically six months to turn it all around if he wants to stay more than a year.

Yes good luck Alen. I fell your are going to need it.

Given he's been headhunted by the probable new chairman I can see another early contract extension providing he doesn't completely **** the bed.

Preemptive contract extensions have never turned out to be the wrong move at WSW.

Its actually not all bad, I think it's set up nicely for the Stajinator.

the whole league is a disaster zone no-one has money so clubs will need to rely on their Yoof.

We have a NPL team that was doing well until the A League players were took out of it.

Players like Hammond and Younis will smash it this year.

Hopefully he can pick up a few decent visa players to supplement the kids and all will be, how can I put it? Eetswa.
