  • Yengi Lights Up Derby With Late Winner

    mack

The first Sydney Derby of the 2022/23 A-League season served as a temporary pre-World Cup farewell to the A-League and a welcome to the derby for the new Sydney Football Stadium. A tight, tense affair saw the deadlock broken late in the game with a Kusini Yengi thunderbolt to give the Wanderers an emotional victory, their 100th win in the A-League.

Sydney FC were forced into a number of changes, particularly in defence with Alex Wilkinson injured, Paulo Retre suspended and former Wanderer Jack Rodwell still yet to make his Sydney FC debut. The Wanderers added Yeni N'Gabakoto to their squad to possibly make his first appearance in Red & Black.

The opening 10 minutes was cagey and rough, neither side could find an advantage while both teams were physical in the challenge, Marcelo in particular was tasked with keeping Patrick Wood quiet and he did so strongly, sending the young forward crashing to the turf to clear a header. 17 minutes in Calem Nieuwenhof had the first decent chance of the game, after the Wanderers attacked down their right flank, and the clearance fell to the midfielder, who managed to bring it down enough for a shot that deflected away for a corner that didn't go to plan but still ended in a blocked shot for Tomislav Mrcela.

Yengi was inches away from opening the scoring, a lofted ball over the top caught the Sydney FC defence totally square, Yengi rushed onward, with Redmayne coming out of his goal the Wanderers striker couldn't get a toe to send it around Andrew Redmayne. Nieuwenhof picked up the first yellow card of the game after a half hour for a midfield challenge, a harsh booking when it wasn't stopping a promising attack or overly forceful. Borrello forced Redmayne into giving away a corner with a low powered shot that the keeper didn't take any chances with. The corner was whipped in and head tennis results with Marcelo finding his defensive partner Mrcela who sent it over the bar with his own header.

SFC sprang to life with 5 minutes in the half left, counter-attacking quickly with Anthony Caceres striding forward and firing at Thomas, the rebound producing a corner that Thomas rose to claim easily. Rhyan Grant got away with a series of professional fouls from Alex King, including a blatant body check on Nieuwenhof that killed a Wanderers counter stone dead but wasn't punished with a yellow card. The half ended shortly after, at 0-0 with no clear cut chances for either side having been created.

Sydney FC came out firing, with Robert Mak cutting back inside on the byline to shoot, Thomas palmed the ball back into the middle of the penalty area where it rebounded from Romain Amalfitano back to the keeper. Yengi took advantage of a mistake from James Donachie, it allowed Yengi to run into the box, from a wide angle he elected to shoot rather than a cutback to Krpic, his shot flashed wide of the far post.

Milos Ninkovic had spent the week as the centre of the pre-game drama, after leaving Sydney FC in controversial circumstances, he had spent the first hour being booed by his former fan then butchered a gilt edge chance to silence 70% of the crowd. He was clean in on goal after the defence parted like the red sea, he had all the time in the world and in the end, too much time, not managing a strong shot at goal to the delight of the blue portion of the massive crowd.

The game was begging for a moment of brilliance and it was delivered by Yengi, and begun by Ninkovic. The Serbian maestro pushed forward, creating panic in the Sydney defence, he found a perfect ball to Yengi. With a lot of work to do he cut back once, twice, onto his right boot and rocketed the ball into the roof of the net with Redmayne having no chance. The scorer ran off to the RBB, being mobbed by the fans and his team-mates. Borrello had a similar chance to Ninkovic's with a similar result.

Yengi took his leave of the game as the Wanderers first sub, with Yeni N'Gbakoto making his debut with a 10 minute cameo as the game was tightly poised at 1-0 to the visitors. Adrian Segecic had a point blank shot in the 89th minute, he was unmarked as Gabriel Cleur was claiming offside instead of marking a player, perhaps the occasion getting the better of the youngster and he fired over.

Luke Brattan took a long range effort from a cleared corner with just minutes remaining. Ninkovic was simultaneously applauded and booed off the pitch with his 94th minute, time wasting substitution for Alessandro Lopane, who almost immediately picked up a yellow card for clattering into Gerd.

Brattan's last second chop down as Nieuwenhof strode forward on a counter should have been punished with a straight red, but Alex King bottled the decision as a general melee broke out in the middle of the pitch. Sydney FC were clearly frustrated at their poor performance, being totally outplayed in yet another Derby. As the 97th minute ticked over, King finally blew the full time whistle, giving the Wanderers their first win in the SFS for 9 long years. It was a completely deserved win, a tough fought match with the touch of class from Yengi that blew the game open. The away end exploded in joy, celebrating both the derby win, the performance and rising back up to 2nd place on the A-League ladder.

The A-League goes on a month long World Cup break, the resumption is set for Saturday the 10th of December with an away trip to face Wellington Phoenix in their erstwhile home of Wollongong.

Doesn't matter what they say or think. The thing Channel 9 / 2GB and their viewers / listeners don't get is not everything is for them.  They aren't going to come to the games, or contribute to football so stuff 'em, hopefully the A League is starting to realise that we aren't going to please everyone and we shouldn't bother trying.

A 2GB listener trying to understand football is like a dog listening to classical music.

Please don’t associate 2GB “listeners” with dogs. If dogs could talk they’d be very unhappy with the unfair comparison to such lowly animals

Brattan should have got sent off for that hack on Nieuwenhof at the end of the game. He was through on a clean 2 on 1 with the keeper with no defenders in front of him and only gets a YC. Donachie ran in and started throwing headbuts at Marcelo. VAR didn't look at either of them of course.

Yep. And given half a chance King or the VAR ref would have awarded a penalty to the smurfs.

The other hilarious thing about the rubbish Nine report: quoted the cops saying they would work with the FFA to reduce anti-social behaviors at future games.  Good luck with that given that the FFA do not run the A-League anymore. In fact, the FFA is not even called the FFA anymore.

All in all it was a great night.
Back to where we all want to be.

The new stadium is nice, but Geez, it cost a lot.
Entry through that SCG gate was still much more painful than it needed to be.
And the Police Officers on duty truly have no idea what is going on.
[at any other level of work, you'd want to brief the team on what's happening?]

Had a few nice late afternoon beers at The Shakespeare, with a nice bit of food.
Took a lad to his second A-League game (his first was Mariners last week) and he loved it.
The tram thing was a handy way to get up the hill to the ground.

    The game was predictable.
We are simply much better as underdogs.
    Ninko and Nieuban were great.
I'm just pissed I'd didn't put more on the $3.90 win offer.

Our tickets were in the block to the left of the RBB.
Obviously it was well overcrowded and that's ok.
[but I couldn't really work out where all these extra folk came from].
I asked a few of the pimply idiots (in our seats) to move up a bit.
It's the indignation of how they reply with 'this is active' (and then all that modern passive aggressive stuff) that's odd.

Listen youngsters, I'm not asking you to pi55 off, although maybe I should,
all I'm saying is move up a bit so as we can all see the game.
And do not talk to me about 'active' like its some sort of new thing,
I've been going to games since the early 1970s, so I've seen a bit.

    Utter little chunts.

Yep it was a great night.
    We're back.
The first signs of our heart and soul are reappearing.

PS: we really should send that CH9 report to Media Watch.

Fantastic match, and how good is it to see the red and black take over East Sydney again. Seeing the RBB in full voice and behind the goals brings goosebumps again, and reunites that passion that has been missing the last few seasons.

The team played hard and were much better on the field but i feel the support got them over the top. Yengi just needs the finishing touch to be a perfect player and showed that he can be that man. Ninkovic 90+ minutes while Rodwell collects a weekly pay check for sitting in the stands without playing a match! Defence was solid again and Rudan knows how well the back 4 work together in holding it strong.

As to the media, being in the news is better than to not be, when football is seen as a threat the same cucarachas will be around to try to bring football down. We don't need to try to win over non football fans to our game, we just need to keep the same people returning again. The ball is the FA court now to ignore the reports, ignore the asking from media to ban fans for "invading the pitch" and to make decisions that will be the best for the A-League. As for the younguns in the RBB getting too excited on the sight of their first flare or smokie get off the ***** phone and stop filming and posting it online, you are taking the bait and giving the media all the footage they need to spin their propaganda. 4 arrests out of a crowd of 35 000 makes the headline news of a Sunday night! There's more people getting arrest at my local pub on a sat night which holds 500 ppl!

Pity we have a break now for the World Cup as the momentum would do us wanders! Heres to a great squad who want to go far and achieve this season, a coach who as we heard in his speech, understands the West and how the fans deserve a team that fights and represents who they are and lastly but most importantly to the fans who have stuck by week in and week out, either by attending matches, staying in touch by watching games/on this forum for years or just wearing the jersey with pride anywhere they go, waiting for the moment when we turn around and become once again a feared and respect team on and off the pitch.

Now is the time again for us to make Wanderland a fortress!

Yeni is going to be a weapon. Hopefully him returning means Yengi gets more chances at 9

Yengi is a beast. The more inverted or central he plays the better off we'll be in attack.

Yeni is experienced & will more be likely to use the width on the pitch & add a different wide attacking option.

Dogs have a better appreciation of classical music than the right wing ultra conservatives who are the biggest part of the 2GB audience.

Channel 9 started their Sunday News segment with "troubles, flares and fighting" at the Sydney Derby - they spend about 2min on the -ves and the added something like "and the Wanderers won 1-0"
    Chunts.....

Channels 7 and 9 do not deserve reporting on any football event in general, and the Socceroos in particular. They have been toxic for the game, and continue to be so.

I wander if Mel's influence actually allows A-league to even get the 15 second reporting that she does. I have noticed no negative Football stuff come out when Mel is on the panel with channel 7 news. Ok it doesn't pop up on Sunrise despite having Sam Mac as the weather man, but the fact that it pops up on channel 7 news at all is probably Mel as she puts it alongside EPL.

Do any news anchors actually get a say in what is reported? Sure certain journalists/anchors can request coverage of certain stories/puff pieces but I'm sure the final decision of what goes to air is made by their bosses.

Arrived back from Japan today, I downloaded the match on YouTube as I haven’t watched it so I watched it on the plane.

Very physical match, Sydney wanted to get on the front foot and thought if they get in our faces, we should rollover for them like they done to us in previous derbies but unlike previous derbies, our players stood up.

Grant and Brattan probably the 2 grubbiest players in the A-League, the amount of fouls they have committed and yet don’t get yellow card for it where our players slightly touch them and get cautioned for it. Alex King did not have control of the match, he let a lot of physical challenges go for both teams but we were pulled up most of it than SFC. For big matches you need the best refs for it which I think Faghani was perfect for this match. It’s good to see someone like Marcelo standing up for our team and making sure that players like Brattan know that this **** won’t be tolerated.

Marcelo was in beast mode that night. So comfortable when defending and his ability to read the play shows what a quality signing we have. I am so happy we have a player like him in our team.

The one thing I noticed is how weak the left sided defence of SFC was, every time we attacked that side, we get into good goal scoring opportunity but we don’t get enough players into the box to finish off those chances.

Milos handled the occasion very well, 4 SFC players try to take him out all at once but out players were there to protect him but Milos was able to take care of himself, that run and pass to Yengi for that goal was just pure class and something you should expect from a player like Milos, he’s 37 but he’s playing like he is at least 10 years younger, he has so much energy and was able to play 90+min.

As for Yengi, wow, that run and finish was just pure class. A lot of players in the past do the same play and somehow waste the chance. Yengi backed his own ability to create space and position to finish that off which. I definitely want to see him starting at 9 over Krpic.

Whilst Yengi might offer more in attack does he do as much of the grunt work required of Krpic? Ninko doesn't do as much given his age so can you afford to have more than one not putting in a shift defensively (I haven't analysed Yengi enough to know for sure if he is lacking off the ball).

So all this talk about pigs heads and dead rats for something that was rather tame. The tifo (meh), burning your own jersey (LOL) and a Juda$ banner (predictable).

The RBB one way way better.....simple, but to the point......"Different Nest.....Same Rats "     :D

He doesn’t have to I believe.

Krpic plays too deep and does the job but we need players who stay up front to finish off those chances that we create. Too often this season we create chances and there’s no one there to finish it off.

When Yeni starts, I’d like to see Yengi start as a 9 with Milos playing behind him.

    The Juda$ banner was weird.

If they wanted to keep him but he left for more money then fine, but they screwed him around over the citizenship thing and we offered him a chance to continue playing without uprooting his whole family.

Also making such a big thing of it with the jersey exchange, making a whole tifo about it, etc is basically just saying "look how upset we all are".

Only got back home late last night after a good weekend back up in Sydney so no comments before now but how great is it to be back at the SFS for a proper derby and the Wanderers taking the spoils. Whilst not hitting any dizzy heights we were by far the better team and handled the pressure wonderfully. Stadium is great and I'd thoroughly recommend the upper level behind the RBB for anyone going next time who doesn't need the hustle and bustle of the active area. Still work to be done if we are to challenge the likes of City but there were some decent passages of play on Saturday night. RBB in good form so hopefully we can grow on and off the field on resumption. Looking for a decent turnout in Wollongong!!

That's a good point, I feel like Yengi is one of the lazier ones in our squad, Krpic is one of the hardest workers.

Swapping Yengi in for Krpic would definitely have a big effect on our pressing game which is netting us our best chances so far and seems important to Rudans tactics with us.

With Yengi scoring he gets the monkey off his back with the bonus it was in a big game and it was his goal that was the difference. Will do a lot for his confidence going forward. He is starting every game which is something he didn't do at Adelaide. I still think he is a great signing and he will only get better with more games and experience. He is surrounded by very smart and older team mates. Can't wait for the season restart.

Don't confuse his running style with amount of effort.

    • Is the red party line on TAA changing?  If he leaves he'll go from 'best right back in der werld, la' to "we didn't want him anyway" He is probably the most overrated footballer in the EPL. Some of the ranting from commentators is ridiculous "he's redefined playing right back" Yes if that means nor actually being able to defend. His famous long passing game is mostly twatting the ball into the corner for Salah to chase
    • Yeah Trent came a close second in the stealing a living list, right behind Michael Oliver. No issue with the De Ligt penalty as the current interpretation is arm above the shoulder is handball. But when a Liverpool player does it during a United corner (I believe it was Gravenberch) nothing. Not to mention Maguire’s clean tackle on Jota on the edge of the box that Oliver not only called a foul but also booked him for.
    • Also we have managed a win, a draw and a loss with three of the worst officiating efforts so far this season - and that's saying something in the A League! Strangely we managed to win in Adelaide with the worst of the lot IMO. That bloke had a shocker
