  • Wasteful Wanderers in Debut Draw with Mariners

The Western Sydney Wanderers spurned a number of chances to put Central Coast to the sword, the Wanderers debut ending in a nil-all draw in front of over 10,000 spectators.

A fireworks display and a presentation from Ian "Dicko" Dickson that involved Wanderers Chief Executive Lyall Gorman and FFA Chairman Frank Lowy was a fitting prelude to the match itself.

In teeming rain and gusting winds, the Wanderers controlled the majority of attacking possession and the biggest chances of the game but couldn't convert one to take the victory. The closest the Wanderers came in the first half was a Labinot Haliti break after touches by Kresinger and Polenz lead to Haliti being one on one with Mariners keeper Ryan in front of the RBB. He took one touch too many, the ball skipped away and so did the chance. Aaron Mooy and Mark Bridge tested Ryan also, but their shots lacked either direction or strength and none seriously challenged the young keeper.

When the game resumed after half-time the Mariners finally made some inroads into the match but stoic Wanderers defense held them at bay. Nerves frayed at the end of the match with several Mariners corners being given, but again the Wanderers held firm. Kresinger had a final chance to take all three points but was unable to put his shot on target and the match ended in a not undeserved 0-0 draw. Shinji Ono was a late substitute and came on to rapturous applause across the ground and early indications are that has all the quality his nickname of 'genius' implies.

The Mariners would not be happy with their performance. The Wanderers will have turned heads with their defence and midfield work, but will need to improve their shooting if they are going to seriously trouble the teams expected to place in the top 4. The performance of the Wanderers bodes well for the upcoming match against Adelaide as well as for the Round 3 Sydney Derby.

The Wanderers next match is the Round 2 encounter against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide. Friday the 12th of October. 7pm Adelaide Time, 7:30pm Sydney Time.

Just shows that Bridge is NOT a provider is better left to run onto balls and shoot.

for all the flack Bridge is copping, he got into some fantastic positions in that first half especially as we attacked the RBB end.

i said to the people around me at half time, imagine if that was Ono in the space Bridge had.

it's such a shame that once he got into those positions, his final pass and decision making let him down. i'm prepared to give him time, and see how he goes as the wide man of the 3 making runs, not playing the ball through as a traditional number 10.

Loved every minute of it! The crowd was great, the game entertaining and the RBB was at its best!

So great to see so many new faces!

Time to check the game on download so I can properly watch the match.

Hersi had some nice touches but he was creeping to far infield, particularly in the 1st half, when the ball came to the other (Western) side of the park.

CCM were simply switching the play over to their left side and playing out with ease.

Popa was none too impressed and must have thought he was speaking a foreign language, because Hersi wasn't compling with the instructions being delivered (with venom), to stay wider and close down the space.

Hersi was flexing his knee / upper shin area after cooling down on the bench.

He was a surprise tactic for round one, but it would be a risk (fit or otherwise) to start his against Radelaide.

We have so many wide midfield options available that I sense Popa will mix it up our fullbacks and midfielders on a regular basis to match up against the opposition we are facing.

Again thanks for the inside info (you need to do that every home game :) )

I saw Hersi do that (drift infield) and assumed it was because he's used to playing more centrally. That and his apparent nerves appear the kind of issues that are easily adjusted over the course of a season. His talent is obvious and worth the grace of more game time, hence my faith in him.

Having said that, you make a valid point.

Without picking out a particular player, I'd MUCH rather Hersi and the issues he has currently, than a squad member that finished the Rd1 game

As Banana would say - WHAT???

Ono and Kwabs are both, far more penetrative than Hersi.

Don't forget we also have a lean and keen Tahj ready to rip and tear.

We just need to find a marksmen, although Haliti did find the net plenty of times during the preseason, hence why I've backed him @ $26 to be the leading scorer in the HAL this season.

He must be forgiven for one average, over enthusiastic 1st touch.

He'll repay my faith in Radelaide, particularly if he plays on the right and can cut inside his defender and get the opportunity to shot with his damaging left peg.

Tahj looked good when coming on pre-season against Parra.

With Tarek, Cole and Kwabs also left out of the starting XI, i think that maybe, just maybe, our depth will get us through to the finals series. I think we showed we have what it takes to do well in our debut season. Lets hope it wasn't just the hype of our first ever game.

Really interested to see how we tackle our first away game. Do we go ultra defensively or do we try to attack/counter? Adelaide are in fine form and are a tough opposition

i don't see any reason to change how we played against the mariners.

absorb all the pressure, and hurt them on the counter

We'll go with our standard 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 formation, unless we are dominate and going for the juggler late in the game, when Popa will flick the switch to a 4 - 3 - 3 formation.

Central Coast play a very patient game & it took forever for Ryan to take goal kicks.

Maybe he was trying to test RBB Behind his goals in the first half.

I think the 1st 11 should be left as it is for at least another 1 or 2 games. They didn't do to bad first up and should be given time to settle. The wet surface made the ball skid off the surface a bit and proberbly didn't help the passing. So I'd be happy to give the same guys another go in Adelaide barring injury. Hopefully Haliti, Kresinger and Bridge take their shooting boots with them this time.

I'd love to see the individual stats. I reckon Ryan would have had the most possession and passes received/completed out of everyone on the pitch. At one point their midfield bypassed the back line to pass back to him from the halfway line.

There were a few Mariners fans sitting near us in the Western Stand so we got the 'Boring Boring Mariners' chant going. Every time they played back to the keeper after that they were shaking their heads and at some points getting pretty frustrated with their team. If they keep playing so negatively they'd better start getting results because the fans aren't going to put up with it.

Indeed, CCM were playing rather negatively. I've never seen Ryan take so long to take his goal kicks, and they were keen to retain possession inside their own half rather than push forward on multiple occasions.

I've been trying to determine why that was the case, perhaps they were trying to prevent the excitement and adrenaline from WSW playing their first game. CCM were also using a new formation (4-2-3-1) with a few new faces (Pellegrino, Sterjovski and Duke) in the opening line-up. I think the new formation with 2 holding midfielders (Pellegrino and Hutchinson) meant there were effectively 6 players in a defensive role. Add to that McGlinchey was playing on the opposite side to normal and a very wet pitch, and we could have the formula that led to CCM playing a very slow build-up.

Bolton never passed the ball pointlessly around the back line for that long. Plan A was to go route 1 as soon as they got the ball and Plan B was to kick the crap out of the other team. Still, it used to be pretty effective against Arsenal (Bolton beat them 4 times while Allardyce was boss) which lead to some hilarious press conferences where Wenger complained about them 'not playing football' like his team.

As said he played well. Looks to tidy up behind Mooy after we go forward.

CCM were playing a new system apparently....copying the 4-2-3-1. Probably not used to having 2 holders passing the ball around for no reason in their own half. I also think CCM really did not want to lose this one....imagine how embarrassing that would've been for them.
