The Western Sydney Wanderers spurned a number of chances to put Central Coast to the sword, the Wanderers debut ending in a nil-all draw in front of over 10,000 spectators.
A fireworks display and a presentation from Ian "Dicko" Dickson that involved Wanderers Chief Executive Lyall Gorman and FFA Chairman Frank Lowy was a fitting prelude to the match itself.
In teeming rain and gusting winds, the Wanderers controlled the majority of attacking possession and the biggest chances of the game but couldn't convert one to take the victory. The closest the Wanderers came in the first half was a Labinot Haliti break after touches by Kresinger and Polenz lead to Haliti being one on one with Mariners keeper Ryan in front of the RBB. He took one touch too many, the ball skipped away and so did the chance. Aaron Mooy and Mark Bridge tested Ryan also, but their shots lacked either direction or strength and none seriously challenged the young keeper.
When the game resumed after half-time the Mariners finally made some inroads into the match but stoic Wanderers defense held them at bay. Nerves frayed at the end of the match with several Mariners corners being given, but again the Wanderers held firm. Kresinger had a final chance to take all three points but was unable to put his shot on target and the match ended in a not undeserved 0-0 draw. Shinji Ono was a late substitute and came on to rapturous applause across the ground and early indications are that has all the quality his nickname of 'genius' implies.
The Mariners would not be happy with their performance. The Wanderers will have turned heads with their defence and midfield work, but will need to improve their shooting if they are going to seriously trouble the teams expected to place in the top 4. The performance of the Wanderers bodes well for the upcoming match against Adelaide as well as for the Round 3 Sydney Derby.
The Wanderers next match is the Round 2 encounter against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide. Friday the 12th of October. 7pm Adelaide Time, 7:30pm Sydney Time.
