  • Wanderers Win In Season Two Debut

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers completed a 2-0 win over a spirited Macarthur Rams outfit tonight at Campbelltown Stadium in their first pre-season match of the 2013/14 A-League season.

The Wanderers opened their A-League Premiership defence in front of four and a half thousand raucous supporters, including a large contingent in the half-way line RBB section. Heavy rain prior to kick-off dampened expecations of a crowd numbering over 6,000 but those who did turn up were treated to a typical pre-season match. The Wanderers were rusty and had many players out of position or filling in from other State League teams, while the opposition Macarthur were up for the challenge and not bowed by the 2012/13 A-League Premiership winners.

The major surprise of the evening was that the Wanderers line-up included Nick Ward on trial. The utility journeyman, having been released from his second stint with the Perth Glory, took up position at right fullback. Unfortunately for the 28 year old, his performance was well below the standard one would expect from a Wanderers player, with seemingly every touch he made resulting in a loss of possession or killing a potential attacking thrust. He was caught flat-footed on several occasions and his positioning while the Wanderers were in possession was left wanting.

The second was the debut of a truly atrocious pre-season kit by Western Sydney. I don't know if it was created by putting together offcuts of fabric, but the garish striped number will go down in history as one of the worst kits ever used by an A-League team.

The rumours that a new back of shirt sponsor would be coming on board were confirmed as Mitsubishi Electric adorned the strip for the first time. A welcome addition and one that should help push the club closer to a break-even figure by the end of the season.

Two goals were scored on the night, the first half saw Shannon Cole convert a free kick on the half-hour mark. The kick wasn't particularly fast, but it managed to go through the wall and left the Macarthur goalkeeper stranded on the other side of his goal. The match was secured when Mark Bridge scored from close range in the second half with a strong finish after good lead up play from Trifiro and Minniecon. The match was a great way to kick off Season 2013/14 for the club and it's supporters, and I hope that the rest of the pre-season continues in the same manner.

The Wanderers next match will be against Canberra Olympic on Wednesday the 14th of August, 6:15 PM at the AIS Athletics Field in Canberra.

Big call regards Tahj and Kubi Pup. Kubi is young, makes mistakes a lot of young players do. Needs to run less and think more. Will come with experience.

Tahj showed a lot of potential at the Roar but never really developed and progressed. Will he find his form and live up to hi potential or will his career just fizzle out.

If popa kept him he must see something in him.

That's because he went to Gold Coast which ruined his career.

If he stays injury free, Tahj will have a big season

As for the chants, the new ones were ehh.. I understand not everyone knows them but they are too lyrically complex. They sound like a **** top 40 song. Especially when the tone is lower in parts of the chants, the words arn't even understood and sounds like a big mumble. Then they jump up again and sound good. Parts of those new chants could be chopped out.

I think people just need to learn the chants. They aren't lyrically complex.

I get bored singing streets of western sydney and popeye because its only 3 lines of lyrics.

A quick search on Martin Lo.. was on Footall stars of tomorrow but dont know much else. Westie through and through.

"There could be a growing trend in Australian football with Martin Lo leading the way. This talented 13yo Australian representative was born in Sydney of Vietnamese background and he is making huge inroads in the game. Martin started playing football just seven years ago with his local church side Guilford McGreedie but in the space of the last 12 months, he has represented NSW, Australia and is also part of Project 22, where he trains four times a week. Martin is also a Year Seven student at the famous Westfield High School, who's most famous student was a Socceroo by the name of Harry Kewell!!"

Also found he played national under 13s in 2010, so he would be 16 tops!

What about the short Asian player? Number 11, he is only 14! He did good, he impressed me in the 10 minutes he had.

    Martin Lo.

How do you know he's 14?

I noticed him, to be honest it was because he was 4ft nothing. But he had class. Did not look too out of place at all (once the early nerves wore off and he started getting his positioning right).

If he is indeed 14, sign him up!

Kubi told us he was 14

He probably thought he was 14 cause he is so short.

Good first hit out for the team. Defensively sound and controlled the game. Too early to judge say but when Taj and Hersi came on in the second half they really made Kubi look poor. If Taj keeps playing like he did last night he will definitely be our bench winger. Heffernan was also impressive in marshaling around all the trialists. I really think he is an asset to the team.

Lo impressed me the most. Would love to see that sort of player in our youth squad and pushing through.

Thanks for the match reports fellas. Was there a Dean-O chant for Heffernan or is he not yet worthy of such accolade?

    I'm new #3986 checking in G'day y'all.

welcome welcome, and i think Balkanite is the only one worthy of such a decision regarding that chant.

Actually, hearing comments like "Dino would have got that" after a cross went into the box and was cleared, is really starting to annoy me.

Its not as if we released a striker that scored 13 goals in the season.

Compared to a football chant, yes.

Heffernan has always been one of the A League's better full backs. Will be a good asset, can play further up or central too. One for the ACL.

compared to what football chant exactly? there are many different types of chants.

it actually went pretty well for the first time. just give it a chance and see how it goes.

It happens whenever we introduce new chants and people don't know it. Preseason is all about learning and improving chants. Whether they are new or not.  Last year's preseason we tried out so many different chants to see which one worked and which one didn't. Also, we didn't have all of the drummers with us last night, so Matador may not of sounded impressive but I think we still did a good job considering it was our first time singing it. Gotta give it time, people will catch on and it'll be epic.

Everybody can help out by sharing the new chants around, if you know someone from work, school, or whatever and they wanna get into this, help them out a bit by showing them the chants we have and learning the correct lyrics. :)

I thought Matador actually went alright last night. I was expecting a lot worse tbh

What I found though (with every chant) is that a lot of people have no endurance or get bored too easily and only sing a chant twice and then give up.

I noticed this with every chant.

Maybe they want a 90 minute skitz mix of chants with snippets of each?

    • My A+ on Staj is about the fact that we have performed extremely well in attack but  struggled with a leaky defence that has left us with the risk of missing the 6 (I hope we don’t) so it is not about the last 5 games only it is about the season long leaky defence  as well , had we not lost Wookie he may have turned out a good solid defender who knows ? Gersbach is a very good upgrade on Clisby be it that Clisby has been going ok in the last half a dozen games but he has been aweful for a lot of games,  the future is Gersbach. Cleur has been a solid defender and the 2 kids in the middle are coming along well but we are still leaking goals , we can’t grind out wins and this is going to continue for the next 5 games and into the finals if we get there. Josh Laws was signed but he may have not have come up to scratch hence no game time. My conclusion is with a full off season and the opportunity to strengthen the defence and midfield (Brillianti) we will have a very good side next season that is reason for for the A with the + for the great effort to get us into the position we are and hopfully take us deep into the finals and the best choice to take us forward next season OR we may have the choice of : Talay , Chiefie , Veart , Stanton or even the Pommie up at CCM                         THE END this is my last novel
