  • Wanderers Robbed In Auckland

    mack

A combination of poor finishing for the Wanderers and inept officiating has helped Wellington Phoenix to a 2-1 win over Western Sydney in Auckland tonight. Jaushua Sotirio & Ulises Davila scored either side of a Nicolai Muller equaliser, with the headlines dominated yet again over a contentious VAR decision.

The Wanderers started brightly, dominating the first 10 minutes. Kwame Yeboah unleashed a low drive that glanced past the far post, and Mitch Duke's leadup play allowed Nicolai Muller a tight chance that was agonisingly wide. In the 19th minute Muller cut inside, beat a Nix defender with a body swerve then fired a curling shot that was heading for the side netting until Wellington keeper Stefan Marinovic's fingertip save turned it around the post.

After half an hour the Wanderers interchanged neat passes between Pirmin Schwegler & Yeboah, allowing the midfield to win a corner that Matt Jurman banged a header requiring a double handed save from the keeper. Wellington had their first major attack of the half in the 44th minute, breaking in a counter-attack down the left flank through Jaushua Sotirio, the resulting shot from Steinmann being blocked by McGowan. The first half was a familiar tale of the Wanderers having the majority of possession and chances but failing to unlock the defence with the final ball.

Two minutes into the second half Wellington capitalised on a long ball and flick on that put Sotirio clean through on goal and he lofted the ball over the head of Daniel Lopar to open the scoring.

After another 20 minutes of toil the Wanderers finally had their deserved equaliser. Daniel Georgievski got on his bike with a 25 yard run that he ended with a neat through-ball for the run of Muller. With a yard of space free he found a sidefooted finish that evaded the sliding cover defence and Marinovic to nestle into the bottom corner for 1-1.

Midway through the second half Mitch Duke was rocked in a jumping contest by Tim Payne, the Wellington midfielder bring down his elbows and giving Duke a bloody eye socket. The Wanderers Captain continued on stoically with an emergency bandage wrap covering up the wound.

With 10 minutes to go Daniel Lopar continued his sterling form, Callum McCowatt flicked the ball at the near post at close range, Lopar covered his near-post well with a magnificent diving reaction save on the right hand to keep the scores level.

For yet another week, the VAR intervened to give the Wanderers opponents a massive advantage. Wellington won a penalty after the ball was smashed into Schwegler's arm from a meter away, while his arms were down by his side. Despite being at point blank range, the referee waved it away, then ambled over to watch a dozen slow-mo replays and award a penalty that goes against the rules as written. It was easily converted. The Wanderers pushed for another equaliser but couldn't get it done. Wellington deserved at best a solitary point, but instead took all three points with the early Christmas gift from Daniel Elder. With rumours circulating about the potential exit of coach Markus Babbel, it remains to be seen if he will be in charge for their next match. If he was to be punted by chairman Paul Lederer, the way he & his side have been treated by our disgracefully poor officials will be a huge reason why.

The Wanderers face Perth Glory next weekend on Saturday December 14th, in Perth with kick-off at 9:45PM Sydney time.

I actually think we will make the 6, but only 5th or 6th and a first week finals exit. Expectations were so much higher for this season :(

Babbel to remain and get this sorted out, really can't see a benefit to getting rid right now.

Do we have the squad to make the six.?....not so sure at the moment.

Genuine question. Why would you not want Babs out if you think he can’t fix this?

Could be any number of things.

Club stability or reputation (seems to be what most people on here are worried about)

    I genuinely like the guy

    Is there a suitable replacement?

Is it the right time? (would end of season be better)

Its a bit of all of those for me.

    I'm on the fence

Seriously what’s the deal with Meier?

Marquee striker that’s now being reduced to coming on as an injury time sub.

Hands down Madaschi Cup champion at this rate, not even a contest.

I’m not worried about the reputation issue. We kept a manger for 5 years. We sacked one. Babs is now 18 months into his tenure and has accumulated 7 wins.

There will be replacements. Muscat is the first option.

It’s the right time if we can turn the season around. Finishing second or third will do more for our reputation than holding onto a bloke who can’t win games.

Were currently 3 points off the bottom of the ladder. 2 more losses and that’s exactly where we are going to be. At that point I imagine most fence sitters will be all out of patience

I don't disagree with any of that. I think I was one of the first on here to mention Muscat...

Next week stop flapping about with leaving marquees off the bench, playing people out of position. 4141 (or 433 in the modern parlance).

    image.png.cfddcd3dc314363a02e5afd90486cb7c.png

Muller is decently left footed but his quality is cutting inside and being played onto his right foot from the left of the pitch. Duke, Yeboah, maybe even Kamau might be a better option on reflection. Don't care, their job is to attack the byline and put in crosses. Meier is our marquee. He starts. McGowan has been caught out multiple times now, dropped. Georgievski plays on his natural right foot, staying deeper for wide crosses unless we can work an overlap, Wilmering on the left on his natural foot or Elrich despite it not being his natural side. We need 3 in midfield and Sullivan might as well be there. Bench Suman, Tass/McGowan, Grozos, Elrich, Duke/Yeboah, Kamau, Adam.

Cut out the stupid diagonal long balls and the pointless kicking it around midfield waiting for the opposition to press someone who can't play out, and bang it forward preferably along the ground.

If Babbel gets sacked, whoever takes over is almost surely going to play this kind of lineup anyway. Lederer isn't going to be happy that his marquee is sitting on the bench. If by some miracle Ziegler finally gets his citizenship we look for a foreign attacking mid in January.

Sorry Mack, but I don’t see anyone on this forum talking YOU up as the saviour, the god of football, or the best thing that’s ever happened to WSW.

How dare you suggest we need to change personnel or formation, when we’ve been adequately convinced that we’re going to win the league.

Go on, spend your hard earned money on it.

Can’t agree with the sentiment that we were second best .We smashed them in the first half not so much in the second .

Aside from the fact it’s struck from 2m away from our man , not sure how the ref could be sure the ball didnt first touch  Schweglers chest/shirt .

Another bullshit penalty that’s cost us points.

Let's have a look at these last 5 games at where and why we struggled:

    - Roar: Roar were setup to sit back, defend deep, play long balls by getting us on the counter, that's the old school British style of play, we struggled to break them down and the end result was 0-0.

    - WU: this was an open game, we dominated the first 20min, but WU took control of the game after our first goal. We were being out played like the previous games. This was pretty much a Diamanti show, he cut us up and we lost to an Appiah Kubi winner

    - heart: again we dominate early, we took the early goal, but this game was very open and we played well only to be screwed by Beath, it was a game that I think we should have won or drawn. It was only poor defending that allowed Maclaren to score the last minute winner

    - Jets: again, we dominate early, Jets defend deep like the Roar did and we struggled to break the them down to get clear cut chances. Jets 2 goals were from the counter and we lose

    - Nux: same thing against the Jets, dominate early, struggled to break them down because they sat back, defended deep and looking to get us on the counter and that's what happened with Shitirio's goal and on top of that, we lost to a very dodgy call by the ref in injury time.

So as you can see, we dominate early on, but we don't score, we teams defend deep, we just don't know how to break them down.

If Babbel was to keep his job this week, he needs to drop certain players who have been performing poorly.

If it deflects off your body to hand it’s not a pen

Heh I had to look that up. Didn’t realise it was part of the recent change.

Still, was pretty obvious that didn’t happen.

Either way, the pen was garbage. Arms by his side and retracting further

We are shitehouse, there’s no nicer way to put it. Arguing and relying on ref/var decisions is for chumps.

The other stuff I disagree, but this is spot on. We aren’t good enough but still doesn’t stop the fact that it is coming down 1 goal changing the result.

Funnily enough, the last two games conceding the goal has forced us to open up & we look vulnerable. Instead of taking our limited chances earlier in the season, we are now creating more chances but unable to score.

It was his shoulder. Trying to say it was his arm is just flat out wrong.

We’re not on 4 straight losses because of VAR decisions. We are on 4 straight losses because we don’t have the ability to score goals in volumes that nullify the bad decisions when they come along. If we were up 3-0 we’d be annoyed at the decision then move on. We focus on the issue because we aren’t capable of winning games.

Is it the shoulder? What do you count as the arm? Your shoulder starts at your armpit. The rest down from there? Arm.

You're right of course, if we score more goals then it’s not an issue.

The big one? Is there a suitable replacement? Unless we are going in to bring a big manager to our club then don’t make the change.

Muscat has won plenty of trophies in the A-League, a very successful manager but I don’t want him at WSW especially mid season or at all. Personally I don’t think he is better than Babbel. You only get rid of Babbel if you’ve got someone better than him to bring in, Muscat is not that manager.

I’d just like to add some observation to your descriptions of games above:

In the WU & Heart game, we scored early & were happy to sit back & defend. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to score early in either the jets or Nux games.

This is the way that Babbel wants us to play, score a goal & then be set up well defensively. We have shown that we are very comfortable setting up deep, being hard to break down but this leaves us exposed.

I want to add to your descriptions here:
Heart: Good early, scored & looked comfortable till suspect penalty. Then opened up in order to chase the game.
Jets: Started game well (first 15 mins) & had a really good period in second half. Once we conceded, forced to open up in order to get back into game.
Nux: Fantastic first 45 minutes, only missing a goal. Concede early in second, score equaliser but game opens up.

It isn’t so much that we can’t break teams down, it’s that we can’t take our chances like we did earlier on in the season. In chasing that goal, we are so open that we end up conceding chances ourselves.

I still blame Popa for ******* off to some shitty Turkish outfit on a whim at the most precarious point in our short history. In another world Popa and Ante Milicic stay together with Ante ultimately knowing he will inherit the top job with a smooth transition and heart, soul, ethos and direction of the club maintained. Milicic has been dicking around and will now manage Macarthur, decent manager that will do well for them.

The early success i think caught the club off gaurd whrn it came to future planning. This is what ESFC have done well with Arnie and his departure.

The ACL curse is just an excuse for poor club planning.

The handball rule is so much worse since the changes.

They talk about the arm being away from the body and about it being in a “natural position”. But what happens when being away from the body is the natural position? It seems now that unless you run around with your arms pinned to your sides and your hands in your pockets it’s an “unnatural position” which is completely backwards.

Schwegler had his arm down low in a completely natural position for somebody moving laterally and trying to get a leg out to block a shot. He clearly wasn’t putting his arm there to make himself bigger and as he could see the shot coming in he was actively trying to move his arm away from the ball and behind his body.

Under the current rules I can’t see how that’s a penalty, and if they’re being interpreted in a way that makes it a penalty then the rules are completely broken.
