  • Wanderers Fail To Break Roar's Second Half Slowdown

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers were looking for a win against the lowly Brisbane Roar that would catapult them into the top 6 in Parramatta tonight but defensive mistakes and the inability to break down the Roar's packed defence saw them share the points instead.

The Wanderers knew that after the losses to Sydney FC & Wellington Phoenix earlier in the round that 3 points would put them in 6th place on tiebreak, and there was no better side in prospect to face than the last placed Brisbane Roar. There were no changes to the side that beat Melbourne City 2-0 before the Wanderers first bye weekend. Roar manager Ruben Zadkovich was facing immense pressure with sections of the media pushing to have him replaced by former A-League star Besart Berisha, who was reportedly in the country & angling for a head coaching role in the A-League or NPL.

Brandon Borrello had a big rush of blood to the head when he spotted Roar keeper Macklin Freke off his line and attempted a shot from closer to his own goal than the half-way line. It had enough power to get into the Roar penalty box but nowhere near enough to stop Freke running back and catching it.

Antonee Burke-Gilroy became the first man into the referees notebook when he cut down Nicolas Milanovic from behind to stop him rushing toward the box. The set piece proved deadly for the Roar, as Joshua Brillante delivered a curler to the back stick, Bozhidar Kraeve sent a looping header back into the mixer that the Roar defence could only head back across goal where Borrello nodded it home.

The lead lasted 3 minutes. The Roar attacked down their right flank, with Jack Clisby on his heels chasing a run from Ben Halloran he failed to intercept a ball passed straight at him. Halloran took the space and delivered a dangerous ball to the far post where Gabriel Cleur had to intervene to prevent a tap-in. Unfortunately for the Wanderers his intervention ended turning the ball into his own net.

Borrello was looking hungry for a goal and he had it in the 21st minute. Another foul from the Roar allowed the striker to line up an audacious 32 yard strike. It was hit well but not with massive power, but Freke had let himself get out of position as the shot was struck and it meant he wasn't in position to turn it over the bar. Instead it dipped wonderfully into the back of the net to make it 2-1.

The Roar levelled the game in the 31st minute. A simple midfield turnover from Milanovic set the Roar on attack, Tommy Waddingham only had Anthony Pantazopoulos to beat and he beat him through his legs with a nutmeg shot which Lawrence Thomas couldn't get near. Adam Zimmarino followed his coach and Burke-Gilroy into the book for a studs showing tackle near halfway. Zac Sapsford's strong header was aimed at Freke, he arrived late in the box for a Borrello cross. Kraev had looked uncomfortable defensively and he eventually picked up a booking when a midfield mix-up allowed the Roar to sprint away, Kraev eventually pulling the shirt and bringing down the attacker not long before the half-time break. There were no changes for either side on resumption.

Neither team made much of an impact before the first subs of the night as Kraev & Sapsford departed for Marcus Antonsson & Aydan Hammond. Milanovic continued his night of cutting back onto his left and shooting with no luck. Roar gave away another dangerous set piece that was curiously not punished with a card. Milanovic stood over the ball as the obvious shooting choice on his left foot but he sent it into Row Z.

Juan Mata finally made his appearance in the 70th minute. Milanovic had toiled hard, had a few shots at goal but didn't trouble the keeper and he was the one taken off for the World Cup winning midfielder. His entrance was subdued very quickly by the Roar time wasting, faking injuries and being allowed to derail the game by sitting on the pitch, followed up by even more time wasting with confusion as to which players were coming on and off. Eventually Harry Van Der Saag & Walid Shour left with Quinn MacNicol & Jack Hingert coming on. Pantazopoulos earned a card of his own by knocking down Brazete on the sideline in a clear trip. Cleur then earned one of his own in the 83rd. More "confusion" at who was coming on enabled yet more time wasting as Neicer Acosta & Florin Berenguer came on for Halloran & Loius Zabala.

Deep inside the final minutes of stoppage time the Roar almost snatched the three points, a mistake from Mata allowed the Roar to shoot on goal, an awkward shot that went across Thomas who spilled it into the path of Acosta, with Thomas scrambling back he did enough to prevent a goal. Up the other end it was the Wanderers who had their best chance of the half, Brillante finding Cleur with a neat ball to the byline that the Roar managed to block an effort from Mata. James Temelkovski came on for an A-League debut replacing Dylan Scicluna, Oscar Priestman on for Borrello. Even the Roar keeper was falling to the floor, prompted by Zadkovich.

Brisbane wasted the vast majority of the 7 minutes without punishment, either from the ref or the Wanderers attack and that was the summary of the second half. One of the worst halves of football in the history of the league, Roar playing anti-football and falling over, and Western Sydney playing football, but playing it awfully while wasting one of the best attacking talents that the league has ever seen.

The Wanderers next match is against the Wellington Phoenix, in Parramatta on Sunday the 22th of December with kick-off at 5pm.

Brisbane Roar fans are just as infuriated, if not more so, by Zadkovich and the time-wasting tactics.  They’re being very vocal, across socials.

Was so frustrating to watch, and for the referee to do nothing about it??

Absolutely embarrassing by the referee and Brisbane Roar.

We should have never been in that situation to start with and the Roar laying down was a disgrace but what is more of a disgrace is the way we defend; they were on their way for a famous victory before he told them to lay down. No relegation, bottom of the table and he does that, always been a nuffie really so no surprises there.  Daniel Elder though he was the person who can do something about it and he did **** all, how the keeper escaped without a yellow is beyond me.  Would that have happened under Faghani?  Theres your answer.

As for us though, that disgrace from the Brisbane Bore covered over some terrible performances.  Milanovic with 3 options lost the ball on halfway for their second but the fact that he didn't even chase back should have seen him hooked.  Borello in the 94th minute was sprinting back to defuse a situation. Anyone who wonders why Mata is not starting only has to watch what happens when he comes on, nothing.  Sapsford, aimless running.  We have no vision other than around the outside and cross into 7ft defenders for our 4ft strikers (that is if anyone is there at all).  We need to start playing through teams, we did it for 20 minutes and we looked good.  Truth is that result is exactly where we are as a team, mid table at best with an I don't care attitude that is the most disappointing thing.

Agree with all of the see enrollments expressed. Being there was woeful (but we'll be back next week).

That second half was the absolute worst display of football I've experienced, including under 6's in days gone by. We were exceedingly ordinary, as we are when teams sit back and block us. We have no alternative and no way through. Our passing was serving rate.

On top of all that was one of the worst referring displays I've seen - at any level. There was gross inconsistency across the park. In the first half, Roar were committing professional fouls so over the place, including a very late charge on Sapsford that got a few kick but no yellow (despite is getting a yellow for an identical hit later). Elder completely lost control of the game, with professional fouls so over there place and then the most pathetic and obvious breaking up of the game through blatant and abusive time-wasting. We had the clock on him in the storage time and he gave no additional tone despite minutes wasted. We were incredulous. Never seen anything so bad and anti-football. Roar should be docked that point and Zadkovic stood down to along with Daniel Elder!

We had a meet up last night and so was out and about, I only watched 10min of the second half and so cant comment much on the game.

Years back I would have dropped everything to be at the game, no way would I be doing what I did yesterday evening on a home game day. When it was planned and the wife said what we were doing tbh I didn’t even look at the fixture list, WSW weren’t in my thinking. Checking the score was a bit of an after thought….

Thats sad, never thought I would be that way.

You didn't miss anything. We were good for about 15-20 mins. The second half was woeful.

We didn't look mid table unless we can define 10th as mid table

I was more embarrassed for WSW.

Conceded 2 of the softest goals you are likely to see to the bottom of the table team at home.

After the game our players didn't look bothered at all. They really don't care.

I thought we played fine.  Staj isn't very good but the players tried.

The reef killed the game and any intensity it had, let things go that would not be tolerated for a second in Sunday league.

    What game did you watch?

We weren't fine at all we conceded 2 soft goals to throw the points away and created absolutely nothing in the second half. if it wasn't for Thomas we would have lost that

Milanović resembles the attitude of the modern young Aussie player.

I don't know the kid, but posseses that sense of entitlement, that will eventually earn him a contract in the Croatian third division.

He goes missing in big games, or when the going gets tough.

Hogs the ball, when an obvious pass is on for a team mate in a better goal scoring position.

The hat-trick game, everyone forgets the absolute sitters he missed in the first half.

I wish the kid all the success in the world, but he ain't all that.

I am one of the easy marks who bought the ACL kit, maybe to recall a time where our badge meant hope instead of despair. However, the sponsor sublimation is so bad that the blue background is bleeding into the bottom half of the white 'VISY' text. The night only got worse from there.

Cleur looks shot of confidence and his poacher's finish should see him off - if only we had Simmons available. Worth noting it was Clisbinho getting skinned that let BR put that ball across the face.

And the second goal was not the first time Panta has let his man get a shot through him. After 10 years we can conclude our youth development is not even top 3 in the league and will not win us anything.

If we do not sign two new defenders in Jan I will be tossing my member card in the bin.*

It’s a huge worry. They should’ve been up for that last night big time. Bang a few goals in for our differential and get in the top 6. Against the worst team the league has seen for yonks. Maybe we need a complete reboot. Jesus I’m getting sick of this.

After the game they didn't care. Weirdly our fans stand around and clap them, for what?

    My view

without singling out individual players names we concede an own goal were our player would 99 percent of the time cleared that the kid from certainly took his goal well from a position normally not  dangerous I did see some good football played by the wanderers in the first half and I seen some consistent attempts to breakdown a 10 man defence playing the most dirties consistent disruptive tactics game has ever seen in the a-league  I have for one one expect tha the Brisbane roar management should sack their coach immediately and the A-leagues should ensure that happens Zadovic has brought the game into disrepute , act now

For those that still buy a season ticket each season…….you deserve a medal / award. I don’t know how you do it. Fair play.

Tbh…when I was a teenager and following the Boro I went to some stupid away games. Like we were bottom of the table and went to like Southampton on Tuesday night in January with around 50 other Boro supporters. You do it because you are young and daft…

Can’t do that kind of commitment with our lot at the moment…just been going on too long….too much incompetence…

So apparently we dominated the game according to Stajic

I must have gone to the wrong ground again

To be fair we did dominate. We were just useless in defending the dominance and then scoring again for the win. That's the really disappointing thing.

We had 14 shots to 10 7 on target to 5 hardly dominating, passing the ball aimlessly around the back is not dominant. They had the best chance to win it. Also we are at home against the bottom side on the table.

We were dominant for until about 2 mins after our first goal.

Dominating is having shots on goal and coming away with a win or saying how did the keeper save that. Their keeper had next to nothing to do.

Yeah a bit but you are posting a lot of hyperbole atm. And I have a headache.

To be fair, I said they were 'fine', we don't wanna jump on people for mild opinions like that or 'readers' get discouraged to post.

Anyway,  on the game, I wasn't too upset with the way the team played. They tried hard. If we couldn't break them down, that's more on Staj. Brisbane did well to destroy momentum of the game. Credit to them, it worked.

I place the blame squarely on the referee. He allowed it to happen and needs a stern talking to by his boss and a week or two off, it was embarrassing.

    Maybe 30-40 all up

I must say, for completeness, if I meet the love of my life at Tuesday speed dating, I may be unavailable for next Sunday's match :ninja:
