  • VAR Rescues Sydney FC

    mack

The final Sydney derby of the 2021/22 A-League season ended in a typically controversial decision, Sydney FC benefiting from a poor VAR call to hold on to a 3-2 win at Kogarah Oval in a result that ends the Wanderers slim hopes of playing finals football.

Sydney FC's big news in the pre-game was the loss of their two first team goalkeepers. Former Wanderer Andrew Redmayne was out with illness following his return to Sydney from international duty, and backup, and also former Wanderer youth product Thomas Heward-Belle due to a concussion. This left Steve Corica with no choice but to hand an A-League debut to Adam Pavlesic. For the Wanderers the main focus of the week leading up to the game was Keanu Baccus making his 100th A-League appearance for the Wanderers. Stalwart midfielder Steven Ugarkovic was the biggest name relegated to the bench, enabling Terry Antonis & Baccus to form the central midfield duo.

The game had barely time to start before the home side were in front. Sydney FC took advantage of Thomas Aquilina missing an interception on a ball down the flank to speedster Trent Buhagiar, who found Adam Le Fondre with his back to goal. On a 9 game run without a goal he turned, fired, getting lucky as it went through the legs of Phillip Cancar's block and past the dive of Daniel Margush.

In the 16th minute the Wanderers profited from defensive confusion. Kejiro Ogawa broke the line then nodded it back to Tomer Hemed, who manged to win a corner when Pavlesic & Rhyan Grant collided. The corner was swept in and headed way up in the air. Milos Ninkovic tried to clear it but did nothing but bounce it up in the air again caused by the pressure from Cancar. It fell toward Hemed who volleyed through a sea of bodies giving the young keeper no chance.

Sydney FC thought they had the lead again in the 27th minute. With the ball running out for a goal kick, Grant hooked the ball back into the penalty area for Buhagiar, who fired into the ground and beat Margush perhaps with the help of a deflection or bobble off the turf. Their joy was momentary however as the linesman had correctly ruled the ball had gone over the line for a goal-kick.

Margush was called into action when Callum Talbot received a short corner all of 30 yards from goal, he absolutely blasted the ball towards the top corner, forcing Margush to jump to his maximum reach to tip it over the bar for a corner. Up the other end the Wanderers nearly took the lead themselves, as Pavlesic dropped the ball cold in the middle of the penalty area, allowing Hemed to lift it back over their head only to have it cleared off the line.

Seconds before the half-time break James Troisi copped a yellow card for a late challenge on Ninkovic, just seconds after the referee ignored a similar foul by James Donachie on Petratos. The Wanderers did well to overcome the early goal and on the balance of play going in level wasn't too harsh on either side. There were chances at both ends, and the big names on the benchs threatened a second half of more assertive attacking play.

Petratos had the first major chance of the second half in the 57th minute. Troisi & Baccus worked the ball to enable Troisi to chip the ball into the chest of Hemed, who knocked it down for Petratos. His shot was outside of the foot much like Andrew Nabbout has made his trademark, but it was not powerful or aimed well enough to trouble the keeper.

Sydney FC went back in front, Buhagiar was fed by Le Fondre and Buhagiar's right footed shot from the middle of the box beat Margush. It was 3-1 minutes later, a simple through ball from deep in the defensive half from Retre that unleashed the pace of Buhagiar and he scythed clear of Cancar and finished well to give him a double.

Tate Russell came on in a quadruple sub and made an immediate impact, scoring with his first touch of the game. Baccus picked up the ball in the midfield, with no opposition closing him down he found a superb diagonal ball to the far post for the run. Russell had a step on his marker, his header was weak but high in the air and aimed perfectly, Pavlesic scrambled hopelessly as the ball hit the side netting.

Aquilina came within inches of equalising. He squared up his defender on the edge of the area and let fly, smashing the ball into the base of the post.

Once again since it's introduction the VAR came to the rescue of Sydney FC. When Alireza Faghani missed a clear handball from James Donachie, the VAR ignored the obvious offence, with his hands well out by his side. It completely disregarded every handball penalty that the VAR has given against the Wanderers, and provided yet another example of how the officiating in the A-League is biased towards Sydney FC, and against the Red & Black. It robbed the Wanderers of a great chance to level the game in ways that they themselves have copped over the years.

There was even more drama in the minutes before stoppage time. Grant, having already been booked, received a second yellow for a blatant stamp on Aquilina. He went off prostrating his innocence but the offence was clear and the punishment was just. Steven Ugarkovic was another late sub and his shot forced a good save out of the young keeper.

Western Sydney had one final chance to snatch a draw, sending all but the keeper into the penalty area for a long free kick. Troisi took it, lofting it into the air where Mrcela could only knock it out for a goal kick.

It will now take a miracle for the Wanderers to find their way into the top 6, one that doesn't appear to be forthcoming. Rudan has done enough to impress the club owners and earn a longer term contract, and he is clearly saddled with a raft of useless plodders inherited from Carl Robinson. It is now time to bring out the axe.\

Ogawa & Petratos can go straight back to their loan clubs they don't need to stay another minute longer taking space from giving our younger players game-time, Ibini might have better luck scoring goals for the Mounties Wanderers, he's had 17 appearances this season and scored only a single goal, after his pitiful return of 5 goals from 26 games last year. Meijias and Gordon are no longer required either and should already be looking for new clubs next year. It is long past time for Jordi Swibel to at least get a shot on the bench.

The Wanderers next game is against fellow cellar dwellers Brisbane Roar, at the Western Sydney Stadium on Saturday the 9th of April with kick-off at 5:05pm.

Not going to criticise Rudan, or the players, both did as much as they could tonight in my opinion, and we were undone by VAR.

The damage to this season was already done. Changes too little too late.

Another season down the shitter. Big changes on the pitch needed, agree with all the comments above.

For me, Rudan dropping Russell and Ugarkovic was criminal and it backfired on him. Aquilina missed a simple interception which led to their 1st goal and Anotnis coughed up the ball instead of crossing it in for the second.

We are a way better team with Ugarkovic and Troisi in the midfield, which showed later in the game.

Buhagier, Barbarouses, Narsingh, are lightning quick, and create havoc in transition. We dont have that! Something to look into next season.

An excellent effort but beaten by a guy who is normally an unCo klutz.Best game by so far that Trent BurgarHair will ever have.He usually invents a way to miss and rarely provides a decent ball.

Looking forward to getting the deadwood out and bringing in some players who can finish.

Handball all day long and to prove I’m not just biased, I thought Grants first yellow wasn’t even a foul.

Question: why is VAR so secretive this season? In previous seasons there was the Macca’s graphic with the red and green light. This season no one has a clue, the referee doesn’t even seem to sometimes…

    The stench of desperation.

If only he'd felt that desperation in the 55-60th minute when we were clearly becoming stagnant.
I said to @Wanderingbeersclub bang on the 60th that we seriously needed some changes. 65th minute we concede. How coaches can't see the vigor draining from a team i'll never know.

    Such a disappointing result.

After seeing their lineup I genuinely thought we might be in for a big win.

Its so frustrating how we manage to let players completely out of form or who are just outright rubbish belt us every game.

Le Fondre hasn't scored in 9 or 10 games, and we made Buhagier look like Messi tonight.

Generally I didn't think we played terribly, but we lack creativity and finishing ability.

The rightback position is so frustrating, neither of Russell or Aquilina can cement that position as their own at all. Aquilina was horrible for a majority of the game, made tonnes of mistakes and can't make a cutback inside the box to save his life.

The defending for all 3 goals was poor, Aquilina missing an interception. 2nd goal we just let Ninkovic and Buhagier waltz through our team to score a tap-in. We were completely open for the 3rd goal and Margush dived the wrong way.

Troisi had a terrible game. Why we dropped Ugarkovic for this game I will never know. He controls the game well and made a big impact on the game once he came on.

Antonis did alright but his hesitation and inability to put in a simple cross led to the 2nd goal we conceded.

With what he could do Hemed did well. Ogawa and Petratos were pretty awful again.

Subs were brought on way too late, we were getting sluggish around the 60th minute as mentioned by @Upthehill.

Decisions like the non-given handball tonight and complete misuse of VAR will continue to turn people away from the A-League. His arm is clearly in an unnatural position, away from his body making it bigger. Have some consistency ffs! I've seen that exact situation been given as a penalty multiple times! Why not tonight? Absolutely sick of this stuff happening, how can we watch replays of decisions, have the ability to change them and still get them wrong.

Just like he did for the incorrect calls in the City vs Mariners game, I want to see if Sydney FC CEO AND APL Managing Director Danny Townsend will put biases aside and say that the referee made the wrong call tonight, or give us an explanation as to why it wasn't given.

Ali Reza Faghani had an awful game for both teams tonight, and has really stooped to the level of some of the other A-League referees this season. I've watched a fair few games he has been completely horrible.

Season is over, lets get rid of all the deadwood now, play youth and start organising, signing and planning for next season.

Thought RBB were really loud and brought a great atmosphere tonight, despite the outrageously large police presence. Credit to the active support.

So frustrating, another season down the drain, its next to no chance we make finals. Hopefully the club makes the right decisions (doubt) and we might see some success next season.

Rodwell can control a ball, shoot.

Like we saw confirmed last week any hint of doubt and the ref goes, eh, VAR will pick it up. And then it doesn't (**** knows why).

Am I the only one that gets pissed off when the coach doesn't speak plainly about a terrible decision? It shows a lack of passion to me. I get it, they want to be professional, not cop a fine etc. But to come out and say "we didn't get the rub of the green" in relation to the handball not being given is pathetic.

We can blame the VAR all we want but this loss is on Rudan. He dropped Ugarkovic and Russell and started Aquilina and Antonis ahead of them both. Both Antonis and Aquilina had **** games

And he didn't make his substitutions until the 75th minute, he should have made changes in the 60th below the Smurfs scored their 2nd goal but he waited until they enjoyed their 3rd goal to make changes.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda….yeah maybe. I have blame fatigue this season I think. You can simplify yesterday as ‘we went for it’ we went a bit gung ho, and game control went out of the window.

I mean we all remember the backwards and sideways passing under CR when adventures over the half way line gave the team a nose bleed and panic right? It was death by boredom and that at least had changed, you cannot argue that yesterdays performance didn’t have some degree of fight and spirit because it did.

We went down with a spark, it was moderately entertaining, the manager and team looked like they cared, The damage was done on those awful night against the Jets or the Nix for example..some of the worst football I have seen since watching the game for 40 years.

So thank you for some Saturday night entertainment..and will leave at that.

    **** this season.

    Lets go again.

There was a game last night? And it was a derby?

So much for the clubs taking ownership of the league and coming up with a successful marketing plan - I follow the Wanderers and the league on Facebook but the game still didn’t register until now.

The fact the game was even at Kogarah showed they had given up on a decent crowd long ago.

Totally agree. The guy is in the NPL League One tearing it up FFS. 7 goals in 3 games. Plus, he joined the Wanderers to get more game time in the senior squad because the Smurfs weren't giving him any.

    Just give him an opportunity!

They made Robinson and Garcia get sacked after their games against the Wanderers and Glory.

Lack of consistency killed our season. Players running hot then cold then hot then cold again, meant you never knew what side was turning up on any given occasion. Changes to coach, coaching structure, player management, game strategy, lockdowns, etc. compounded this - not to mention our complacency with teams we thought we'd walk over to only come away with a point or loss. Every game irrespective of opposition needs to be played like a championship final. Look at city for example - they want to put every team every week to the sword.

All teams have had issues, and many teams have had players that haven't really delivered on their potential this season, but I think we top the list of this stat. If you look at the team roster you be forgiven for thinking we are an incredibly potent side. When you look at players not firing like Dimi, Antonis, Ogawa, Hemed, Ibini, etc. you're looking at some serious deficiencies. Add to this inconsistency of core bread and butter players and your season is over before it's begun.

Yep although onky Dimi, Antonis and hemed is are a suprise

Ibini hasnt fired since he was the central coast, he was crap last year why anyone thought he'd suddenly learn how to trap a ball, gain awareness in the offseason is beyond me.

His odd couple of decent seasons came years ago, he's lost the pace and so really you are left with a clumsy player who doesn't know where to be

Ogawa's stats are basically what he's doing now, a goal every 10 or so games
