  • Sydney Derby Postponed

    mack

The Sydney Derby that was scheduled to be played tonight have been postponed due to torrential rain in Sydney.

After several days of intense rain, officials from the clubs, broadcasters and venue staff inspected the surface of the pitch this morning and a decision was made to cancel the game and reschedule it for an unknown future date.

Both the playing surface and conditions for spectators would have been treacherous, and with heavy rain and potentially lightning forecast for the afternoon & evening the decision was so easily foreseen it really should have been made last night.

The Wanderers next match is against the Newcastle Jets, at Parramatta on Saturday February 15, kick-off at 7:30PM.

Weekend absolutely ruined. Was so excited for this derby for tons of reasons and now its all gone down the drain. I blame a majority of this on the FFA and Sydney FC itself. I have my reasoning as well.

Baumjohann who has hit good form will now get to play for them and all their injured players will most likely be fine to play as well. They (SFC/FFA bloody saw this coming from a mile away and made no effort to accommodate what was coming or didn't even look to change grounds.

They better let only the players who were selected in the matchday squads play in the rescheduled derby or I believe that's extremely unfair.

Might as well just start handing back refunds, I doubt many will go to a mid week game for both kids and adults. Kids/young adults will be in the middle of their school terms and may have assessments on. Parents/Adults will have work or other pre arrangements.

Absolute b****hit and extremely p***ed off.

It is ****, but not sure there is much ESFC could have done. All surfaces are pretty bad today and I don't think changing grounds would have worked in these conditions. They are starting their ACL games soon and so a rescheduled game wasn't wanted.

If mid week I will be at Kogarah as for me a 10 min train ride from where I work, the lad won't be there though. I get the feeling the police would prefer an early kick off at Kogarah mind, I suspect that 7:30 - 8pm kick off there isn't really wanted at that suburban ground. They wanted the game over and done with in the day light and don't think it was just the TV scheduling. They will prefer to try and find another 5pm slot somehow I think...

There is no way the game will be on next week look at the weather. I also frustrated that Sydney will get to use all their players who couldn't play today. How is that fair at all?

Not going to sook about the rain after all the heat, smoke and fires, fires put out, gardens and lawns get a good drink and dams with a bit more water. On the plus side Cox gets another week to train and gel with the squad. The cooler weather will suit him better.

All things considered, the correct decision.
And for once, it suits me... had sort of double booked myself tonight... now a clear run to the Enmore to see The Stranglers.

    No more heroes.
[only folk of a certain genre will get this]
[punk and football, it was a heady mix in the early 80s]

My free ticket to The Stranglers is a no brainer now. Golden Brown. Glad it's been postponed. Candles go out in the wet.

they should just stick to letting the wanderers host home games because the smurfs obviously dont have a clue and now we are back at parramatta derbies should exclusively be held there

........some sarcasm might be in volved in the first part of my post :P but its a pity they didnt want to hold their home derby at ANZ......no one has ever wanted ANZ but at least the match would be on if it was held there, our record sucks there though

So the ABC were vindicated by moving their broadcast to the ABC Children's Channel. Then we get cancelled and replaced by King Fu Panda.

Looks like Treejack will get to play in the derby anyway.

No, no... do not lament. We want the cnut there when we beat them.

I cannot believe the cricket still hasn't been cancelled.

Greedy cricket authorities trying to get the minimum 5/5 overs in to call it a match and not refund 45000 tickets for a washout.

    What grubs.

honestly i really wish we were able to play this, happy for the rain and they should have postponed it but this was our huge test with JP, yes he has won against the marines but that wasnt much of a test, its not even about beating them, more being competitive against them and maybe its a good thing we have to wait for that test but i just want it over and done

What a bunch of soft €@€#$ the a-league are. Cricketwent ahead at 12/12. They said on fox that Kogarah is one of the best grounds around for drainage

    Obviously not, SCG looks fantastic.

There was a news report showing lots of water on the Kogarah pitch. They will have had those big water soaker up machines all around the SCG pitch.

Should have used the super sopper at Kogarah too. Once again, football is treated like a second class sport in this country.

There is zero chance the SCG and Kogarah have equal quality drainage.

I know that, you know that but someone needs to tell the curator at Kogarah. They said on Foxsports news that it's one of the best drained pitches in Sydney.

There's like 3 open stadiums in Sydney right now that's not exactly hard to do.

edit - Apparently the stadium got a new drainage system installed very recently, but even that was at capacity yesterday and with rain all day it didn't matter.

Supposedly this was a completely commercial decision by Sydney to not go ahead with the game - obviously worried about the match day not living up to it’s expected potential. I was told this by the same person who confirmed it was being postponed well before it was made public so I’d believe it.

There’s also talk that they will move an upcoming weekend game to midweek, so the rescheduled derby can be played on a weekend. Which makes sense given we’re in this predicament for commercial reasons in the first place. I think you’ll find the pitch argument was a convenient excuse.

If there's anything the FFA love, it's pointless delays in order to sell a decision they've already made.

Let it rain let it pour....so glad a stupid decision to play wasn't made unlike Australia Post forcing Postie Pat to get drenched and deliver regardless. A mid week Derby will be fantastic. Like an FFA Campbelltown game.

The responses on SM are hilarious and so delusional.

The conspiracy theories of SFC and FFA not wanting to play the game, darling boys of FFA,  SFC not wanting to play WSW, SFC not wanting to get wet etc.

Look outside the window. A years worth of rain in 2 days. Kogorah has hardly any cover for spectators. The crowd would not have been a sellout and the hill would have been a mud pit if they opened it.

People thinking it's so easy to change venues don't understand commercial agreements.

Would you rather they said the game was on, have everyone show up and delay the game every hour as the ball rolls 1 metre?

Those stating SFC are soft because WSW played in worse in Morocco are morons because that game should not have gone ahead and was a farce, but FIFA forced it to go ahead because they didn't want to reschedule.

I dedicate this song to ESFC.

    Especially this verse:

Don't you go out in the rain
Don't go out in pouring rain
If you go out in the rain
We'll never have that time again
