  • Stone Cole Stunner Salvages Point After Topor-Stanley Shocker

    mack

A 69th minute set piece stunner from Shannon Cole gave Western Sydney a sniff of a title winning goal, but they were unable to put a 2nd past a 10 man Sydney FC who had taken the lead in the 34th minute when a pass from Nikolai Topor-Stanley went horribly wrong and fell to the feet of Del Piero who put away his 13th goal of the season.

Western Sydney knew that a win would see them lift the A-League Premiers Plate at their home ground with their local rivals watching on. Their task was hampered by a long list of absent players. Against a full strength Sydney FC squad, the Wanderers had Captain Michael Beauchamp suffer a late withdrawal due to injury, Youssouf Hersi out suspended, Aaron Mooy unable to recover from a knee injury picked up last week, Jerome Polenz several weeks away from recovery for his quad strain & goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson out for three months with a fractured vertebrae.

Tiago Calvano's off the ball foul on Mark Bridge set the scene early, a bitter struggle with no quarter given or asked. A theatrical dive in the 20th minute by Ali Abbas made a meal of slight contact from Shannon Cole, and the ex-Sydney FC defender was awarded by Referee Kris Griffiths-Jones the first of an astonishing 8 Yellow (3 to Western Sydney and 5 to Sydney FC) and 2 Straight Red Cards (split 1 apiece). The free kick was taken by Del Piero, and he slammed it over the wall, forcing Covic into a double fisted palm over the crossbar.

The 34th minute saw Western Sydney go behind, a calamitous error at the back taken full toll on by Del Piero. Under no pressure Topor-Stanley turned to find his stand-in defensive partner Iacopo La Rocca only to make a horrible weak and badly directed pass that Del Piero latched onto, arrowing in on goal before shifting the ball to his left foot and striking. Ante Covic managed to get a fingertip to the ball but it wasn't enough to turn the ball away from goal.

As half-time loomed Shinji Ono lined up a long range effort that was blocked. The ball fell into the path of Mark Bridge, the Wanderers leading goalscorer and his curling first time effort on the right foot was exceptionally saved low down by Ivan Necevski with the ball trickling agonisingly around the far post.

Before the resumption of play in the second half both sides made changes. Sydney FC replaced Lucas Neill by Adam Griffiths as the Captain of the Australian National Team was unable to overcome soreness in his calf. For Western Sydney Tarek Elrich replaced Adam D'Apuzzo in what appeared to be a tactical sub. The injury worries for the Wanderers continued when Shinji Ono left the field for Labinot Haliti due to a groin strain.

The next major incident was Sydney FC losing a player, but in a manner that didn't allow them to replace the player. Brett Emerton allowed the ball to run beyond him and in his quest to regain possession Emerton's lunging studs up challenge collected Shannon Cole in the ankle, an incredibly dangerous play that could have broken the ankle or leg of the Wanderer. Griffiths-Jones had no hesitation in issuing a straight red, despite Emerton already being on a yellow.

From here Western Sydney took full control of a match that they had begun to regain the momentum of after the break. Dino Kresinger then turned that pressure into position, earning a free kick from Adam Griffiths. With Shinji Ono off the field the only set piece taker of note was Shannon Cole. It appeared that Ivan Necevski had failed to setup his wall correctly, and the poor positioning allowed Cole to curl the ball around it and past the diving keeper.

From that moment the only question to remain in this match would be if Western Sydney could score the goal that would secure the Premiership, or if Sydney FC could possibly secure their finals campaign on the counter. Necevski nearly allowed Dino Kresinger or Labinot Haliti to score that goal, when Griffiths failed to clear a ball with Necevski looming large, it rebounded off the keeper and the Wanderers were unlucky that it fell to a spot that neither Haliti or Kresinger could capitalise, Sydney FC managing to block and clear the ball away.

With 5 minutes to play it was Cole saving a goal rather than scoring it, Yairo Yau burst past Tarek Elrich and delivered a cut back to Joel Chianese, his shot beating Covic but Cole was well placed to head the ball out of the danger zone. As the 90 minutes ended, Cole had chance to become the hero with another set piece, this time however the wall was correctly placed and it did the job by stopping the shot.

With the initial four minutes of injury time extended by blatant time-wasting from Calvano, Western Sydney's hopes of securing the Premiership died when La Rocca was dismissed. As La Rocca attempted to dribble the ball forward Terry Antonis dragged him by the shirt, La Rocca then appeared to lash out with an elbow at the Sydney FC midfielder. Despite awarding a foul to Western Sydney, La Rocca was sent for the field. La Rocca's hands fell to his face, he apologised to Antonis & then Wanderers manager Tony Popovic before leaving the field. It killed what little time remained and the game soon ended 1-1.

For the Western Sydney Wanderers the 1 point enables them to secure the premiership with a draw or victory over Newcastle Jets in the final round even if Central Coast win both their match against Adelaide on Sunday and their final match of the season.

The Wanderers next match is against the Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium, Newcastle, on Good Friday Public Holiday, the 29th of March at 5:30pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

I'm pretty happy with the result too.  By the time you add up the non-starters and then those subbed off with injuries and the red card, we really kept ESFC to a draw with our third string team.

Our depth is good and although many of the players are not regulars, they know how we play and how to keep to our playing philosophy.

I really felt for NTS to night.  He is such a good player and he will be blaming himself.  Everyone makes mistakes - lift your head up NTS - you are a champion.

Kwabena will be great when he has more experience.  He has speed - not quite as fast as Hersi - but lacks the nous to handle the defenders that Hersi has.

All in all, I'm pleased with the outcome - with all our players out injured I had feared we might have lost.  A draw is good.

By the way, whilst I am probably the most biased pro-Polenz anti-Tarek poster in the forum I have to say TE's work last night was solid and effective. Having a seasoned and experienced man in the RB pozzie after Cole was switched over to the left was needed and Tarek did all that could be asked in that context.

Agree. Kwabena is young and although he lacks the tactical experience of Hersi he has potential.

He suffers from the same thing many young Aussie players suffer from. He exerts a lot of energy but not necessarily in a productive manner. Needs to play smarter not faster or harder. This will come with experience.

Great Game, Great Atmosphere. Bring on the Jets game. Mariners game at 6:30pm, could well decide the outcome of the Premier's Plate before a ball is played up in Newcastle next Friday Night.

2 players I was really impressed with last night were Bridge(again) and Cole. Especially Shannon in that 2nd half, his goal aside he put in some really dangerous crosses from that left hand side. Bridge I thought was great, lost count of the amount of times he would get the ball surrounded by 3-4 SFC players and somehow find a way out. Also looked really good in the 2nd half in the middle after Shinji went off. Was really unlucky not to score with that chance in the first half that Necevski saved really well.

Bridge looked great in build-up, I think THAT move in Gosford gave him a taste for assists, but his composure in front of goal was really frustrating. Some nights he really does my head in. Obviously it's tough when Shinji has to leave the field because Bridge always plays better with the Shinj in support.

Anyway, the good news is Polenz is tweeting as if he'll be available next week. Here's hoping.

What was funny most people lining up for woolie I really don't remember seeing before, so I knew I there were flogs.. Anyway I was screaming at the whole line no-one's gunna get in cause no-one is gunna leave. This was @ bit after 4. A bunch of us went to roxy and a few others came later on. We had our chants but we had to wait only 2 seconds for a beer. I love the woolie but if I can't get in I'm not lining up 45 mins and then waiting another 20 for a beer!

In regard to an earlier post. Babalj as our striker adding to the Balkan Brigade. I like. I do not want Berisha. What kind of mullet is that. Also. No two games in a row have I seen more than five faces I recognize in the two dozen around me.???? Some fans last night even had the weird idea that they wanted to be in Bay 56 and actually watch the game. Since when did the Twelfth Man watch. I liked the hoodie/anonymous/rage look. I liked the smurf on a chain being dragged through the mall look. My fear. That in three years we will be so 'fashionable' that a western Sydney team will be one from Penrith and five years after that Broken Hill. Oh well.

Can someone find the comment on here that happened mid-week when someone said that Cole would score from a freekick. I forget what thread it was in. But someone predicted it happening. Definitely.

    real long shot here haha

if shinji gets subbed, i can see Cole scoring off a FK,

Twas me Jamcal, once I seen cole lining up the kick, I thought to myself, no **** way!

definetely went mental with everyone around when he scored, not to mention the litre of beer showers I copped, it felt like I was being showered in glory but we still had a job to do, so thankful we got a draw, was in a **** mood when we went down by ADP's strike.

hopefully we dont concede against the jets on friday. im happy for a draw & not to score a goal, I just dont want to concede a goal.

this weeks build up is just like last weeks, Im struggling to concentrate lol

So much to say about the game, dont even know where to start

Kubi is not as fast as hersi so i dont know why he was trying to emulate Hersi and lose out all the time, once he knew he was beaten 2-3 times, he should have looked for other options, he got in great positions, played good as well, he just doesnt have Hersi's pace to pull it off, i know we had a lot of players out, but the players on the bench are not there to make the numbers, they did good, not great but good, despite having a depleted team, we still could have won the game, especially in the second half to me, we dominated that half, but as soon as we got to the Penalty box, it looked like we ran out of ideas, this game was evident enough that we need a PROPER STRIKER! a Striker who can score and make chances count, Popovic said it was tactical, but i still think Haliti should have started and Dino should have come on off the bench...

Agree with everything here. As much as I love Dino, he should've come off the bench, IMHO.

    • Who would like more things to smile at??   - Wanderers (women and men) didn’t lose this weekend, and Sydney FC (women and men) didn’t win this weekend   - Wanderers are higher than Sydney FC on BOTH the women’s and men’s tables.
    • No Mack, that's not what happened. Gombau rolled the dice with his line up for that derby. CB Hamill played RB, RB Risdon played RW, the nominal RW Cejudo played LW. Something like that. Young Scott played CF, Baby Baccus played as sole No 6, young Aspro CB. Santa and Jumpei came off the bench when it was all too late, and Thwaite stayed on the bench.  The game was lost because Gombau had them play a ridiculously high line where our slow CBs where constantly outrun. Had it not been for Snake in goal we could have lost in double digits. The day after that game Gombau had morning tea with Lederer and JT for a serious WTF chat.  The player's revolt came two rounds later, after the 0:4 in Newcastle. Or rather: that's when Gimbau lost the locker room. That game was so bad and the canyon between coach and assistant coach so big that Hayden Foxe resigned after the game. Maybe there was or is a coach somewhere in Gombau. Maybe he was just misunderstood. Maybe he could have turned wsw into Australia's answer to Barca. I very much doubt it, and we'll never know. What we do know is that he pissed off Cornflakes so much that he left mid season. Gombau was urged to sign a replacement, and he refused! And so for the final game of the season he fielded Hamill and Clisby (!) as CBs, and left Thwaite on the bench. If anyone needs reminding, wsw lost the game 2:3 and where out of the finals. By the time the post season awards night happened, Gombau had pissed off club officials so much that he didn't sit with them on the same table, and the only player who was seen talking to him that night was his old mate from Adelaide, Carrusca. The next day this: "Following a review of the season the decision has been made to appoint a new head coach for the 2018/19 season and beyond. The Wanderers would like to thank Josep for his time with the club." They may as well have written "**** off". Maybe the club should have done a bit of thinking when FFA refused to release Ante Milicic but we're happy to let Gombau go to WSW, and even continued to pay a slice of his salary.   Anyway. The biggest issue are not the coaches, but how we arrive with them. In the absence of a DoS it was the chairman who made the final decision. Gorman picked Popa, Lederer Gombau, Babbel and CR, JT picked Rudan, and Stajcic is Cheng's choice.  That's what needs to change.
