  • Santalab Turns Up The Heat On Rams

    mack

A fierce strike from Brendon Santalab had given the Western Sydney Wanderers a 1-0 win over Macarthur Rams.

The Wanderers opening match of Season 2014/15 was held in freezing conditions in Campbelltown, and the Red & Black shook off any post-season frost with a high intensity pressing game that kept the Rams on the back hoof for almost the entirety of the game.

The key moment came midway through the second half when Santalab blasted a rocket from outside the area that beat the Rams keeper all ends up to open the scoring.

Tony Popovic sent out his charges in the typical 4-2-3-1 formation, and typically of pre-season games, he experiment with his lineup which included several trialists.

In the first half, new goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis took up position between the sticks, with Mark Bridge playing in the attacking midfield role, while trialist Steve Kuzmanovski tore up the right flank, taking advantage of the Macarthur left fullback's woeful positioning to get behind the Rams defence on numerous occasions. The other major point of note was Sandro Pasalic, a 19 year old German national who appears to be a left winger by trade, took up position at left fullback for the Wanderers. Pasalic was most recently part of the junior squad of SV Wacker Burghausen, a club who were last season relegated into the fourth tier of German football.

The second half saw wholesale changes, with Ante Covic in goal, young gun Marty Lo deployed as a deep holding midfielder, and on 67 minutes, the first look at Brazilian attacking midfielder Vitor Saba. Unlike his scruffy beard, his play on the pitch was silky smooth, and Saba lit up Campbelltown Stadium, gliding through numerous challenges and looking to link up with his team-mates. After the match he came over to the far side of the ground where the RBB were situated and spent some time taking photographs and autographs with his new supporters.

All in all, it was a good hitout, and one that stands the Wanderers in good stead for their trial next week in Canberra, Apia Leichardt on the 5th of August, before their first competitive match of the season against Adelaide City on the 12th.

Two other pieces of news hit the twitterverse this evening, one good, and one bad. The bad was that Australian National team defender & Wanderers Australian Marquee player Matthew Spiranovic had been carrying an ankle injury through the World Cup, and now requires surgery that will leave him out for 3 months.

The good is that ex-Victory player, attacking winger James Troisi is set to sign for the Wanderers and it could be completed as early as next week.

The Wanderers next match is against Canberra FC, at Deakin Stadium, Canberra, on Wednesday the 30th of July.

Sandro Pasalic isn't even in football manager. That doesn't bode well.

i was sitting down the western grand stand, it seemed the rbb's late arrival meant a lot of seats had been scattered around so there was a lot of those not usually in the rbb amongst it.

Good report. Glad to know that Vitor looks the goods and our trialists seem to have some potential.

Interesting pieces of news as well Mack (re Spira and Troisi).

    Troisi? Really?

Where the f have I been not hearing this :/

All in all it was a good night out, Skin made a capo cameo appearance for his trademark 1 2 3 West and it was good to play along to a crowd.

A great, but freezing night!  Very glad I brought my polar fleece blanket along!  (Still upset I missed out on getting the WSW snow jacket though - would've been perfect to wear!)

Very impressed with Saba - a few good runs and definitely some great signs!!  His beard was great IRL   - unfortunately I had to leave right after the match ended (damn hour drive) so didn't manage to grab a photo with him... :( Hopefully next time though!

Absolutely loved that we wore our black shorts.

Great work with the tifo in memory of Jack O’Brien - the moment's silence was well respected too.

I liked how Perkatis played, whenever he got the ball his first instinct was to look for an opening and play it forward, even when Poljak was free next to him.

Early in the game Boutzanis gathers the ball, defenders drop back to collect from him but he waves them off as if to say he is going to boot it high so they run up the field. Popa jumps off the bench a bit pissed and tells the defenders to drop again so they do and Boutzanis rolls the ball out to one of them.

Corners were good.Saba is quality, Santa knows where the goal is. LaRocca bit unsure at CD, much better at DM.

Lo reminds me of Mustafa Amini, should try him in no 10 role.

By the way, what the **** was the story with the surface...anyone would think we were watching the Pairs Ice Dance at Sochi rather than WSWvsRams. There were some egregious slippages, including that Komedy Kaper one from the Rams' player in the first half when he had an ideal chance for a shot, then went A over T without putting his foot in the same ***** postcode as the ball...

Saba looks quality, like he could beat any player as he pleased… not sure if its early in the season but he looked veryyyyyyyyy lazy, Santa got a yellow coz he wasn’t tracking back

Very different to Sinji who worked very hard for the team, but I think we can all agree he looked solid on the ball

    +1

    - I really think this is perkatis's make or break season with no mooy to cover La Rocca or Poljak, he will be first choice replacement in this area. It was a shame he got no game time for us last year but this year he will be getting plenty of game time and opportunities to make an impact on our first team. Glad to hear he is already taking steps forward in this aspect.

    - The Boutzanis point, makes it clear what sort of game popa wants to play this year which is much similar to last year! Very good!

    - it's a shame Ono couldn't really deliver those corners, Saba as a dead all specialist will be a breathe of fresh air if we can i prove our conversion from corners!

    - Even though Lo is apparently a DM, thought he played CAM for NYL side last year before he got injured, yes or no?

Let's not forget he got in two or three weeks after pre season had begun so I'm not surprised that he came off the bench so late in the game, that or popa wanted to protect him from the attention that he knew that he was going to get on the night. In terms of his work rate I don't think we should worry so early in pre season. The boys will probably go over the video of the match today or tomorrow and very early on he will figure out the role that popa wants him to play stressing how important his role is in attack as much as it is in defence.

Also comments made already that he was looking for free kicks, got to remember that he has come from Italy where the physicality isn't really there and there is more focus on buying fouls in the final third, it won't take him long to figure this out or he will be given clear instructions that he is going to need to fight for the ball a bit more!

He's been playing at DM for his entire short career as a deep lying playmaker (as opposed to an anchor man who does nothing but defend and screen the back four), but his development as a player would be helped by his playing further up the park to develop his attacking creativity, short range passing game and finishing.

WSW have a midfield structure that goes 1 attacking midfielder, 1 anchorman, and 1 floating central midfielder. Lo would likely end up playing as that floating midfielder if he was to play a first team game.

Considering that there was already a statement in this very forum from the family not only did it show a serious lack of respect by a News Ltd version of an 'ambulance chaser', it also indicated yet again the shallow and ill-informed approach of main stream media towards our community, our sport, our club, our members. This so-called journalist couldn't even look in a publicly available internet discussion site where everything was made abundantly clear about the whys, the hows and the wherefores of last night's tribute...
