  • Santa Snaps Perth Streak

    mack

Goals to Romeo Castelen and Brendon Santalab either side of a penalty from Andy Keogh have given the Wanderers a 2-1 win against Perth.

The win sees the Wanderers kick 3 points clear at the top of the table although the match between Brisbane Roar and Adelaide is certain to see one of those teams close in. A tight first half ensued, with the Wanderers dominant in possession, Glory elected to sit back, defend stoutly and attack on the counter rapidly. The main item of note in the half was the loss for the Wanderers of Dario Vidosic, who came off with what looked like a hamstring problem.

All of the key moments came after the hour mark, as Perth began to tire and the Wanderers asserted their stranglehold on the game. Romeo Castelen opened the scoring in the 62nd minute on the end of a lightning counter-attack. Central defender Alex Grant leapt onto a corner, but his body shape didn't allow him to get much power. Liam Reddy, starting his second game after his derby debut, released a long throw to Mark Bridge. Bridge managed to turn on the ball, finding Mitch Nichols, who quickly laid it on for Castelen. The Dutchman turned inside with his first touch onto his right boot, the second slamming into the base of the far post and into the back of the net.

The lead lasted only a few minutes. Practically from the kick-off, Perth broke down the right hand side through the pacy Chris Harold, who managed to run around the outside of Nikolai Topor-Stanley and was dragged down by the Wanderers captain. Andy Keogh's stutterstep run-up helped to send Reddy the wrong way, but questions will be asked of how referee Strebre Delovski failed to order a retake when players on both sides had encroached into the penalty box before the kick.

Super sub Brendon Santalab entered the fray and scored the winner with a dramatic looping touch. Bridge provided the assist, a lob over the Perth backline found Santalab, and as the ball flew high, Santalab connected with a jumping volley, getting a touch to the ball that teased Ante Covic into a despairing dive and landed just past the goal line.

Perth were run ragged in the final stages, opening themselves up at the back, with Romeo Castelen having the best chance to seal the game with a rocket that crashed into the crossbar. In the end the Wanderers did enough to secure the win, although on another night it could easily have been Perth walking away with the points, as they had more than enough chances to do so.

Poor first half - we seemed to forget how to go forward  :unknw:

But much better second half, showed some Western Sydney grunt and got stuck in. Castelan's goal was lovely and Super Santa Saves the day

Reddy did the job and confident on the ball. Makes a difference

Question though; why are our backs so deep when Reddy is feeding the ball out? Topor is positioned on the back line. I don't get it???

They played 3 up front and pressed early, we couldn't play out, Reddy struggled to find a man in space. By dropping one, sometimes 2 CBs to the line, can give them more time to find a 6 or 8 or FB.

Santa legend....if we could get $1.50 for Topor I'd consider it a good deal

He'll be out for Roar away. Might be good to sit and have a rest wasn't his best game.

Everyone said it Santa = legend. Perth very decent side, wouldn't want to meet them again in finals.

Atmosphere was a little flat at times and very poor crowd. We are top of the ******* table? Where dafuq is everyone?

Hope Dario is okay just heard on post game show it was hamstring. That could be 4 weeks.

Oh well at least Castelen got a goal hopefully it's his time to shine, Mitch, Bridge and Santa have all have their time, maybe now is his.

Fantastic win tonight. Really important considering the way the round is playing out.

Really happy Castelan found the net, will be good for his confidence going forward. Andreu & Dimas are just a class above & Alberto's return saw a calmness return to our back 4. I thought Topor was ok bar getting burnt on the pen. Won most of his duals & didn't get isolated against Keogh or Harold too often.

Good atmosphere and credit to those who stepped up, up the front. We were pretty loud bringing it home.

Awesome second half. The team pick up when santa came on. Crowd picked up swell. A Good game to get back on track.

On another note . Time for aspro to come in for topor. He has been very poor lately especially the last two games. Distribution is getting worse as well as getting beat then giving away stupid fouls.

With the congested table, that was crucial. Now we can sit back and watch others drop points!

If only Romeo finished like that all the time!

Crowd of 12600 was disappointing, it appears that mud stuck with all the flare bullshit.

Any idea why the crowd was 2-3k down on what would have been expected for a high-profile fixture?

Read the end part of my above post. Because football people got sucked into it, I genuinely believe all the negative press had a big impact this time.

That argument doesn't work though when you've got 20k WSW fans at the derby last week.

    Tickets already bought.

It isn't just us. You guys had a disappointing crowd last week (by your standards at least), and other clubs are drawing below what would normally be expected. Derbies are the exception rather than the rule of the last few weeks.

Seems like we are always grinding for the win no matter the opponent. Always making it so hard for ourselves.

Always a lap of concentration or just falling asleep, the penalty was a great example.

Can't remember the last game where we won convincingly and saw the game out comfortably, Victory at home perhaps?

Really feel like the marquee dilemma is gonna come back to bite us.

I would think that the crowd was down because it was Friday Night. It's hard when you have a family, been working all week, kids at school all week and you have have to come home on a Friday night and get ready to go out again. Especially when the game is on free to air and lounge looks so inviting.

My family would never stay home to watch it but I know many who will.

Great game! I could see that the Perth players were really tiring in the last 15 minutes, so I was confident that we could get one more and then of course Santa delivered, as usual.

But could this have been the first time that those useless Smurf tossers were cheering for a Wanderers win?

I almost feel a bit dirty that we prevented them from dropping out of the top six.

Fantastic game, two great goals. I couldn't believe Santa's one went in  :woah:

I think we're quite lucky to come out with a win from that, Perth had a few very good chances. Reddy had another top game.

Do we know what's the go with Vidosic? It didn't look too good from where I was.

People going hard out on NTS. I honestly don't think he was that bad aside from the penalty he gave away (which had my blood boiling) and the stupid header close to beginning of game that nearly allowed them a goal.

Reddy throwing the ball to him within the box when opposition was sitting on the edge of the box was quite scary but that second time he did ok to nullify the situation.

He made some good defensive plays and his work rate was pretty good. Overall not his best performance but in my humble opinion, probably copping a bit more negative comments because of that penalty. That being said, had we lost I'd probably be leading that charge.

Just to add to my (unpopular) opinion, I've never been a big NTS fan. I find him clunky, seems to give away too many free kicks and think his hoofballs look aimlessly kicked in a panic.

Santalab & Castelan goals special. NTS goal crude at best. I'm loving Reddy as much as Jamieson. I'm remembering our far West Derbies with Perth tend to draw lower crowds. Jet lag from our last two performances. Good to see another capo stepping up to the plate. Onwards to Brisbane.

Re Santa goal. Kenny Lowe blowing up in his presser about high foot. He said something which sums it up in Santas favour. Warren pulled out of a header because santas foot was high. Here is the go.. if warren wasnt a pussy, showed some bravery and kept his head in there to try and win the ball then he most likely gets kicked and wins free kick.

    Blame Warren, not strebre.

Keogh also complained when interviewed. He would have been severely pissed off had he scored that one and had it rubbed out.

I can see where you're coming from, sometimes a player makes a big moment negative/positive and everyone jeer/cheer.

I'd say that's been true of Castelen. Does one big positive thing and everyone cheers.

Let's say we go to win the game 2-0 and that penalty is never given but everything remains the same.

I'd rate Topors game as poor. Have a good look at the replay. His distribution was poor. He also allowed space and didn't contest headers which were the reasoning behind Perths big opportunities.

    • Romeo was a constant threat. Just hope you stays injury free now.

    • Neville had his best game.

Whilst doing nothing particularly spectacular Reddy just provides a bit more confidence in goal. You don’t feel the concern you did when Redmayne was there.

Dario walked off OK so hopefully no more than 2-3 weeks.

Perth are a good team and came to frustrate. Well organised and when they needed to come forward they have the weapons. Also Taggert is another proven goalscorer at this level.

I still don’t get why Pio is not even on the bench as an option. Is he THAT bad. Or is it his attitude? If Santa gets injured  L

LOL the crowd giving it to Reddy to hoof it downfield rather than pass it out to NTS on the left from goalkicks in the 2nd half. Playing out from the back is good but if you do it every single time the opposition know to press the defence.

Crowd at 12.5k was just a pass more me. Thought we should get more against a in-form side.

That Ronald McDonald going round didn’t just scre the kids he scared the grown-ups too...  !

Two (hopefully 3) games to go at Wanderland. It’s coming to an end guys......

One of the take aways for me from last night was that Perth's rampant, high scoring attack was nullified by our play. Of course they had chances - we need to look at why we allowed their attacking runs to happen, but we held them. The goal they got, a penalty courtesy of Topor's clumsy defending, was a gift. They didn't penetrate our defense and we score two to take the points. We thwarted their momentum and that's pretty darn satisfying.

Job done, we need to keep pushing and building. Lets see if we can stay top of the table this weekend.

Oh yes they did. It seemed like every high ball was theirs. We really suck at standards defensively. We didn't last week though when Hamill was playing. Funny that.

    • That the killer…for good parts I think that is the best we have played this season. They were pumped up and I was quite impressed with much of the play first half and a good bit of the second. To let that slip last night was as painful as it was inevitable really….and yes…I would put it on Staj and the system…and recruitment. You can’t expect to make the finals, or do anything in them, if you cannot close out games like last night.
    • It feels like a loss no doubt about it  Regarding subs. If we've got starting players that are coming back off injury I'm not going rip to Staj a new one for bringing them off when he feels it's right. I don't think he'd have brought them off unless it was the right thing for them in terms of continued recovered and appropriate conditioning.  What isn't great is the fact we don't have the depth / quality off the bench for their replacements. We got sucker punched by their superior squad depth And i am also sick of the shite refereeing. But the only antidote to that is score more goals/don't concede goals. They will never admit that they made mistakes or turned a blind eye. We have to score more goals to ensure we don't lose games based on the ref.
    • Wouldn't say I feel better. With the squad it felt inevitable though. Have to say though that for 70% of that game we would have dominated any team in this league. It was the best I have felt about watching this team since the highlights of the Layouni season.  As others have posted, it was the subs that killed it. They couldn't match the intensity of the players who were already on the field. I thought Staj set us up well and had the boys pumped up before the game, but the game management is on him.
