  • Pierias' Halloween Haunting

    mack

Dylan Pierias returned to the Western Sydney Wanderers and scored a brace as his former club hosted Adelaide United on the much hyped Asian Champions League win 10 year anniversary. The teams showing up with defense an afterthought with Adelaide doing enough to keep the Wanderers at a distance all night long to win the match by 4 goals to 3.

Both teams came into the game without a win. Adelaide with a sole point for a draw following their Round 1 Bye, the Wanderers losing a Sydney Derby to continue an 8 game streak without a win at Parramatta, but picking up a 1-1 away draw against Western United to open their league account for the season.

Adelaide began brightly, winning a first minute corner and keeping the game in the Wanderers defensive third, before hitting the front in just the 3rd minute. It was an exceedingly simple goal. Panagiotis Kikianis stood on halfway on the ball, with no pressure he found Ethan Alagich who was allowed to stride forward over 20 yards unchallenged and shoot from 30 yards out. The shot was aimed straight at the Wanderers young keeper Tristian Vidackovic, who spilled the powerful shot to the edge of the 6 yard box. The only player to react quickly was striker Luka Jovanovic, he left the central defensive duo in the dust and Vidackovic caught in no man's land after the spill gave Jovanovic the angle to sidefoot the ball in the back of the net via the far post.

There was little reaction from the home team, the quarter hour came with the Red & Black having zero touches in the Adelaide penalty area, zero shots on target, zero corners won with an abysmal 35% possession. None of the stats had improved by the 20th.

Adelaide on the other hand, improved their goal count from 1 to 2. What should have been a harmless cross was completely botched by the young keeper, as Vidackovic punched instead of catching, but mistimed it horribly to knock the ball into Austin Ayoubi who couldn't believe his luck to score Adelaide's second of the game without needing to try.

It took until after that second goal to finally get the ball into the Adelaide defensive area and it turned into a first shot, shot on target and goal. Adelaide failed to clear a Jack Clisby cross and it eventually fell to Nicolas Milanovic at the far post and his rasping finish was strong.

The 2-1 scoreline didn't last long. A dumb foul from Milanovic allowed Zach Clough to fire a free kick into the defensive wall. It broke kindly for former Wanderer Dylan Pierias 24 yards out, it bounced once before Pierias lashed the ball over the crowd of players in the penalty area, Vidackovic may have been unsighted and that lack of vision caused a delay to his dive, turning a shot he probably would have pushed out for a corner into a weak touch that ended up inside the post and nestling in the back of the net for a 3-1 score before the half-hour had arrived.

Mercifully half-time arrived with no further damage on the scoreboard, Alen Stajcic needing to implement one hell of a turnaround if the fortunes in the match were going to change, and in doing so he threw on Zac Sapsford wearing a batman style protective facial mask, and Dylan Scicluna with Oscar Priestman and marquee Juan Mata replaced.

It took 10 minute for the changes to bring the Wanderers back into the game. Adelaide lost possession with an aimless long ball, Alex Bonetig finding Brandon Borrello who turned it around the corner for the brilliantly timed run of Sapsford, he ran into the area and with Kraev beating his marker for pace on the interior line he was found by Sapsford who couldn't miss from 6 yards out and with the keeper covering the near post only.

Adelaide picked themselves up and found a 4th goal. Clough was in an acre of space in the attacking 3rd, he pierced the Wanderers back-line with a precision through ball, Vidackovic was caught waiting for the ball to roll through by the run of Pierias whose pace was more than enough to see him get to the ball first and toe it through for his second of the evening.

The goal fest continued with the Wanderers scoring their 3rd, and the 7th of the night in the 75th minute. Dylan Scicluna monstered Clough off the ball to leave Adelaide scrambling back & out of position, Sapsford recieved the ball and probably should have scored with his initial effort only to be smothered by James Delianov, the rebound was battered into the corner woodwork, leaving Borrello and Delianov to challenge each other for the bouncing ball. Borrello summoned all his strength to out leap the giant keeper in a legal challenge, the contact was enough to send the ball over the line with Borrello wheeling away with 15 to go and a 3-4 scoreline.

With the seconds ticking away the game took on a frantic feel & the Reds fell back deeper and deeper as they tried to defend their one goal lead in the 6 minutes of stoppage time. The last attack of the game was a desparation corner that even Vidackovic went up for, but a near post flick on went over everyone's head and Adelaide managed to scramble it down into their attacking corner to hold out for the final seconds and pick up their first win of the season and keep Western Sydney from adding to their single point.

The Wanderers next match is against Newcastle Jets, at Parramatta on Friday the 8th of November with kick-off at 7:35pm.

What was the crowd last night?...

    I didn't go.

A-league crowds on twitter is saying 7,244. They didn’t announce it last night I dont think.

What concerns me is that Staj will start Vida in both the match against the Jets and the 2nd Sydney derby a fortnight later

I don't see how getting pressed by Sydney's forward line and getting taunted by the Cove will be a good "learning experience"

He got booed at half and full time. Also there was the big sarcastic cheer taking the piss out of him when a made a save early in the second half.

I’m assuming the learning experience will be learning what it’s like to be taunted by opposition fans for a change instead of his own.

Ranting is just pointless… it’s like we have the worlds worst ownership and board who are incapable of fixing a leaking tap 🚰 for what 8 years now?

We are definitely giving the Brisbane Roar ownership a damn good run for their wasted money for the prize of most clueless owners and board in the A-league. That's for sure

Its very odd. He was so highly rated at Daegu. JBM paid 2m for him. How does someone go from being a top 2 CB in the Kleague to being a candidate for worst CB in the Aleague? I agree he's shite, but I'm just really confused as to how he got that way

That's what this club does best remove almost all the football ability a player has when they come here, regardless of who the coach is.

Yep well on his way to becoming one of the worse centre back Visa players this club has ever signed.

Add to that players like Kraev and Mata were and are still not 100% fit to start the season. And Antonsson is non existent. And one visa spot wasn't filled. Well it's like we've started the season with no Visa players at all

I'm not sure I can handle the derby. Weirdly like last derby we will sing about them being a joke of a team while we are getting beat. I'll never ever understand it

I’m in for two cents here, the 4th AU goal I think it was, as ball is 50/50 on half way line, Wookie stops goes backwards and Au drive the ball past him and slip it past the statue straddled on the ground waiting for the ball to come to him.

I remember Taiga Harper having a debut mare first half but improved massively in the second, along with great captincy from Marcelo shielding him and supporting him, didn’t see any such support for the keeper last night, reckon that had a small bearing on his confidence and performance maybe.

The best player in our back 4 is bonetig who has how many a league games experience? that's a real worry.

Staj needs to go. So what if we've gone through several coaches over the past 9 seasons. They were all crap. For everyone one game he has won, he has drawn one and lost two. Catastrophic record.

Staj won't bring any stability or improvement.

Recruitment at the club needs a complete overhaul. Signing Juan Mata is already a complete failure in my eyes. His career ended 3 years ago. Zero end product. If you wanna watch his silky skills, sign him up for your local indoor soccer team. The 7,000 at the game last night is proof that he ain't putting bums in seats. Attendances will only get worse.

Bonetig... there is a good player in there somewhere. He needs a decent experienced centre back next to him.

    Korean needs to leave.

Vidackovic... I've seen Bosnich, Kalac, Covic, Mark Schwarzcer all make howlers, yet went on to have brilliant careers. But, geez, don't think this generation have the mental strength to recover from such a miserable performance.

Get rid of the dead wood. Play the youth and build for next year.

    Season is over.

I will say it again a defencegets very nervous with a poor keeper behind them and this is happening with us in my 50 years off being involved in football I don’t I have seen a worst keeper performance , get rid off him.

Lay off the kid, he's in his first season as a pro footballer, I'll forgive him for some of his mistakes he made last night, but to say it's worst GK performance when we had experience GKs in Redmayne, Tyson, Vedran and Margush and they have made far worse mistakes than Tristan has in which has cost us matches, even a spot in the final series

Everyone’s blasting Jeong and nobody’s mentioned Clisby or Bonetig at all in this post match thread.

First goal - Adelaide player casually strolls through the midfield unopposed and shoots, Vidackovic spills it into a dangerous area, the Adelaide player between Bonetig and Clisby reacts faster than both of them and taps home. Jeong is in position marking his player the whole time.

Second goal - Bonetig gets drawn from left CB all the way to the right corner flag. Cleur sees this and does the right thing, sliding left into right CB, allowing Jeong to slide left into left CB. Then Cleur immediately forgets why he’s there and charges out of the back line to press a player, leaving Jeong to mark two players on his own. The cross clears everyone and Vidackovic punches into his own net.

Third goal - Clisby has an opportunity to head the ball out over the sideline or up field but instead heads it back into the middle and straight to an Adelaide player (exactly the same as last week for Ibusuki’s goal). Milanovic gives away the foul scrambling back to stop him. Jeong is in the wall for the free kick and is the only defender who drops back to cover a potential spilled save like the first goal.

Fourth goal - Pierias makes a run in the channel between Clisby and Bonetig, neither track his run, scores a one on one. Jeong is in position on his side of the back line. You may argue he could have closed the angle of the through ball but he doesn’t even make the top three for culpability on this goal

He plays in a back line with minimal protection from a two man midfield and none of the goals were because of him or came down his side. I don’t remember any significant Adelaide chances caused by his mistakes.

He hasn’t shown enough so far this season to justify a visa spot and I wouldn’t be looking to extend his contract, but we’ve had far worse defenders than him and I don’t see this game as evidence that he’s an absolute donkey.

Lmao I really need to emphasis Vida had a shocker last game but tnroughout pre season and the last 2 games he was great. I think I agree Staj should have subbed him he was having a confidence problem after the first goal.

Jeong is 100% Korean Borda. One moment under no pressure he kicked the a switch ball out... Pro player should not be doing that

I don’t agree Vida was great in the first 2 games. He made some regulation saves, and a couple of good saves a keeper in the a league ‘should’ make. His distribution has also been very poor

Plenty of keepers are good shot stoppers 9 times out of 10, including Vida, Margush and Harper. This means that in the highlight reels of some games they can come out looking pretty good. But it is the other keeper skills including positioning, taking control of the box, decision making, handling the big moments etc that make the difference. If you don't have those attributes you may be able to trick people into thinking you are good, but it eventually comes unstuck as we saw last night.

I made comment after last weeks game that Vida  made me very nervous every time he touched the ball , poor control and highly questionable passing out, and my comment was if it makes me nervous the defence must be feeling the same , this week I was looking for the bottle of Valium to calm me down so imagine what the defence must have feeling like with out a chemist shop on the sideline ( or was there based on the first 25 minutes) , I will reserve my judgement on the defense until Thomas is back but Vida is a natural disaster and seems to be slow in his reactions , (a symptom of Valium).

What Vida needs now is sent back to the NPL and learn how to be brave , how to throw yourself at an oncoming players feet , how to keep your eyes open when you are challenging for a 50 50 ball and how to be position aware  , all of these things he failed at against Adelaide.

The Wellington keeper also gave away a howler yesterday costing Wellington a potential dray , must have something to do with Halloween week for the kids

Vidackovic had a bad game - simple as that - but he's a kid new to the league, i can forgive him and the 2nd half he did make some good saves - personally happy they left him on - i wanted to see his reaction - i wanted to see what mental resolve he has. at the end of the day, he is not our #1 and its matter of time before Thomas is back in goal - but he should not player next week as we need to uphold standards. Even if Thomas is playing, i think we are lucky to get a point - we invited Adelaide in and gave them free reign for their goals, its not the kids fault only.

Jeong can move on in January - he does not give me any confidence and he stresses me when he's playing out from back, he shows no urgency and when he passes to team mates, the opposition read him like a book and press that player and we just about turn it over so poorly, and if he isnt doing that, he just hits it long out of hope and leaves 1 of our front 2 hopeless unable to contest it.

It was incredibly frustrating to watch us look better and somewhat entertaining in the 2nd half, we only needed to conceded 3 1st half goals to get to that point - we have no enthusiasm when we start games - there was no motivation needed given the celebration last night was meant to be - but alas we looked dogshit.

Borello is our 9 moving forward so we really need to move Antonsson on in January if we arent playing him - Borello looked hungry and chased balls - it was good to see, he has leadership qualities, but we just dont see it enough each game.

Crowd was very disappointing and its really demoralising to see what our club has become, we look back so fondly of 10 years ago and we are an absolute shadow of that club and a laughingstock both on and off the pitch. Credit to everyone who turned up and credit to the RBB for going the full 90 as always - there's good elements of our once great club still there, but we are just not intimidating anymore and we struggle to get people to come.

I dont know how Scott and those at the club fix this, its a hell of a job to fix and everything we do seems to make the club worse. We need to get our culture right and get our mojo back - that is more important then wins right now

that said, sign me up friday night, its a new week and another chance to support the mighty Red & Black - Lets Go WSW
