  • Pierias' Halloween Haunting

    mack

Dylan Pierias returned to the Western Sydney Wanderers and scored a brace as his former club hosted Adelaide United on the much hyped Asian Champions League win 10 year anniversary. The teams showing up with defense an afterthought with Adelaide doing enough to keep the Wanderers at a distance all night long to win the match by 4 goals to 3.

Both teams came into the game without a win. Adelaide with a sole point for a draw following their Round 1 Bye, the Wanderers losing a Sydney Derby to continue an 8 game streak without a win at Parramatta, but picking up a 1-1 away draw against Western United to open their league account for the season.

Adelaide began brightly, winning a first minute corner and keeping the game in the Wanderers defensive third, before hitting the front in just the 3rd minute. It was an exceedingly simple goal. Panagiotis Kikianis stood on halfway on the ball, with no pressure he found Ethan Alagich who was allowed to stride forward over 20 yards unchallenged and shoot from 30 yards out. The shot was aimed straight at the Wanderers young keeper Tristian Vidackovic, who spilled the powerful shot to the edge of the 6 yard box. The only player to react quickly was striker Luka Jovanovic, he left the central defensive duo in the dust and Vidackovic caught in no man's land after the spill gave Jovanovic the angle to sidefoot the ball in the back of the net via the far post.

There was little reaction from the home team, the quarter hour came with the Red & Black having zero touches in the Adelaide penalty area, zero shots on target, zero corners won with an abysmal 35% possession. None of the stats had improved by the 20th.

Adelaide on the other hand, improved their goal count from 1 to 2. What should have been a harmless cross was completely botched by the young keeper, as Vidackovic punched instead of catching, but mistimed it horribly to knock the ball into Austin Ayoubi who couldn't believe his luck to score Adelaide's second of the game without needing to try.

It took until after that second goal to finally get the ball into the Adelaide defensive area and it turned into a first shot, shot on target and goal. Adelaide failed to clear a Jack Clisby cross and it eventually fell to Nicolas Milanovic at the far post and his rasping finish was strong.

The 2-1 scoreline didn't last long. A dumb foul from Milanovic allowed Zach Clough to fire a free kick into the defensive wall. It broke kindly for former Wanderer Dylan Pierias 24 yards out, it bounced once before Pierias lashed the ball over the crowd of players in the penalty area, Vidackovic may have been unsighted and that lack of vision caused a delay to his dive, turning a shot he probably would have pushed out for a corner into a weak touch that ended up inside the post and nestling in the back of the net for a 3-1 score before the half-hour had arrived.

Mercifully half-time arrived with no further damage on the scoreboard, Alen Stajcic needing to implement one hell of a turnaround if the fortunes in the match were going to change, and in doing so he threw on Zac Sapsford wearing a batman style protective facial mask, and Dylan Scicluna with Oscar Priestman and marquee Juan Mata replaced.

It took 10 minute for the changes to bring the Wanderers back into the game. Adelaide lost possession with an aimless long ball, Alex Bonetig finding Brandon Borrello who turned it around the corner for the brilliantly timed run of Sapsford, he ran into the area and with Kraev beating his marker for pace on the interior line he was found by Sapsford who couldn't miss from 6 yards out and with the keeper covering the near post only.

Adelaide picked themselves up and found a 4th goal. Clough was in an acre of space in the attacking 3rd, he pierced the Wanderers back-line with a precision through ball, Vidackovic was caught waiting for the ball to roll through by the run of Pierias whose pace was more than enough to see him get to the ball first and toe it through for his second of the evening.

The goal fest continued with the Wanderers scoring their 3rd, and the 7th of the night in the 75th minute. Dylan Scicluna monstered Clough off the ball to leave Adelaide scrambling back & out of position, Sapsford recieved the ball and probably should have scored with his initial effort only to be smothered by James Delianov, the rebound was battered into the corner woodwork, leaving Borrello and Delianov to challenge each other for the bouncing ball. Borrello summoned all his strength to out leap the giant keeper in a legal challenge, the contact was enough to send the ball over the line with Borrello wheeling away with 15 to go and a 3-4 scoreline.

With the seconds ticking away the game took on a frantic feel & the Reds fell back deeper and deeper as they tried to defend their one goal lead in the 6 minutes of stoppage time. The last attack of the game was a desparation corner that even Vidackovic went up for, but a near post flick on went over everyone's head and Adelaide managed to scramble it down into their attacking corner to hold out for the final seconds and pick up their first win of the season and keep Western Sydney from adding to their single point.

The Wanderers next match is against Newcastle Jets, at Parramatta on Friday the 8th of November with kick-off at 7:35pm.

Agreed. I hate having to blame a young player but the fact is we would have won 3-0 tonight if Thomas had played.  Nice that everyone on here is going easy on the guy, but the fact is he cost us the game.

Eh, you can put me in the 'not taking it easy on him' column. That was appalling. At his age and level of traning, all four of those stops should be muscle memory. I'm even willing to give him the first one, but goals 2, 3 and 4 were BAD. He should have caught the first but I somewhat understand the decision if the ball is swirling

    Video below for reference:

    - Pause the video at .32 seconds. He HAS to see the adelaide attacker coming which means he makes a stop/interference vertically to go over Ayoubis head. If he's connecting passed ayoubi, he should be catching.
    - Second goal was absolutely saveable. A shot passing him at chest height when the shot is taken outside the box is criminal. It hasnt like it skimmed the inside of the post, it was a foot inside. I could get into the head movement at 1.07 and how he should have taken a step up but its barely worth discussing if the foundations are clearly missing
    - The 4th goal was the worst of the lot. Wookie is super lazy on this one too. As soon as that line is broken, Vida should be flying out like a bull at a gate. Low, hard and wide. He does none of these and conceded yet another goal for it. Wookie should have seen the run and known he keeper SHOULD have been causing a deflection and hairing back to clean up... he just watches

Its little nit picky stuff but its how you win games and trophies.

Very disappointing! It was like watching 'park" soccer. Our players can't control the ball without having three touches, can't pass to a team mate, and always kill a fast break by turning the ball backwards. Some of the senior players need to get a lot fitter.

Being at the ground it was clear that the players had no clue what they were meant to be doing or how they were meant to be playing. They were making it up as they went. If Staj has a system it’s clear they don’t understand it.

This was all predictable from the beginning. Staj has never won anything. Even the club wasn’t confident and gave him a one-year contract.

The time to remove him is now. If we are going to get anything out of this season we need to re-start as quickly as possible. I don’t expect the club will do this because it’s pretty clear the new chairman is worse than the last chairman - which is saying something.

This was like a get together, a kick about with your mates. Absolutely no structure or game plan at all.

Their touches and passes were complete donkey and on top of that, the defence is a complete **** house, we go from having the likes of NTS, Beauchamp, Spiranovic, Alberto, Marcelo and Mrcela to useless defenders in Jeong and Bonnetig

its honestly been many years since i have actively followed the wanderers,  i came back at a very....interesting time, no defense but can actually look good in attack when we feel like it(at least the 2nd half) while its mostly doom and gloom since we have 1 entire point in 3 matches, i am actually interested to see how this plays out, but defense was so disappointing, never had any confidence we wouldnt concede

maybe Adelaide made our attack look decent though

After all that “hype” for the 10 year ACL celebrations… the “Post-Match Tribute: The WanderLap” was just a sing-a-long with the RBB. 😳😳

I don’t know, I assumed when the club said, “members and fans will meet our Asian Champions League Champions up close” - that members and fans would actually get to interact with said players, (photos/high-fives…) rather than the players seeming scared to get any closer than 10 metres away…

Nothing is as advertised with the Wanderers these days.

Everything leaves you disappointed and feeling ripped off.

I will say it again a defencegets very nervous with a poor keeper behind them and this is happening with us in my 50 years off being involved in football I don’t I have seen a worst keeper performance , get rid off him.

Yep. It's galling to watch at this level. A team can't score if it can't hold the ball. Simple as that. What was it, like 80% possession for Adelaide in that first half?

So I've taken a deep breath, I've calmed my farm somewhat and I think it's fair to say that our defence cost us this match. Mostly the keeper but a few others in our defence. Vida is young and i hope this is a positive lesson for him looking back on the game, but for the team's sake, we need to field a better keeper than this while Lawrence is recovering from his injury.

Jeong looks clueless and just passes it backwards and I don't know what's going on with Cleur but he's not adding value this season.

I don't know. Large chunks of our game felt awful last night. Was impressed with the fight back in the 2nd half, but 1st half capitulation created such a mammoth task we were chasing the game from the start.

What was the point of signing Jordan Holmes? He had a couple of good showing for Roar last year and is at least experienced enough not to Shane Warne googly the ball into his own net?

Antonsson still nowhere to be seen, he is Piovaccari 2.0. It is so galling that we could actually do alright if we sent him packing and used the two visa slots on a CB and a CM. Surely the Mata jersey sales could fund this!

Side note: anyone remember RBTV saying Scott Hudson told them we'd have a 3rd kit this season to commemorate the ACL?

I was saying the same thing. Hands down the worst keeper performance I have ever seen. You cannot win a game when a keeper fails to make so many basic saves.

I suspect that Vida is good in training, but just crumbled under the pressure last night. And after the first big blunder he lost his nerve. I'm also assuming that he was seen as a potential replacement for Thomas in a few years, but that plan should be out the window now.

Most of these players probably haven’t stepped foot in Parramatta let alone the stadium in the last 10 years, it would be considered “up close”

Holmes has been pretty hopeless in training from all reports. However at this point you have to make a change.  Is Taiga harper injured? He wasnt amazing but he wasnt anywhere near as bad as Vidackovic last night. I can't believe im saying this but we would have been better off keeping Margush. He turned into prime Petr Cech for 2 games, and even at his worst he was leagues ahead of Vida last night

Margush would have needed the whole season to make as many mistakes as we saw last night.

    Reliably 1 howler a game.

Staj did a massive disservice to a young GK leaving him on last night. A good coach puts Holmes in, takes Vida aside and talks him through the reasoning ie protecting him while his confidence is low. You then spend the next 2 training sessions building him back up, putting him in training games to get his mojo back. Error compunded on error last night

Margush would string together 2-3 decent games and then pull off a howler. Not good enough, but never 4 howlers in a single game.

What concerns me is that Staj will start Vida in both the match against the Jets and the 2nd Sydney derby a fortnight later

I don't see how getting pressed by Sydney's forward line and getting taunted by the Cove will be a good "learning experience"

Staj might be gone before next derby 😂 if he loses against this week the pressure will be immense…

the players really don’t seem to be a cohesive unit - yes probably pretty obvious that’s what it comes down too

Did you see how many times last night Botetig is barking at the Korean bloke - should be other way round - that Korean is getting worse each week he’s positional awareness is shocking.
Then you have Brillante and preistman who barely can combine to make one functional player.

Ranting is just pointless… it’s like we have the worlds worst ownership and board who are incapable of fixing a leaking tap 🚰 for what 8 years now?

ill pay money to go the next away  derby im not paying one ******* cent to go back to a home game anytime soon 🤬

Its very odd. He was so highly rated at Daegu. JBM paid 2m for him. How does someone go from being a top 2 CB in the Kleague to being a candidate for worst CB in the Aleague? I agree he's shite, but I'm just really confused as to how he got that way

if we’re winless by the derby then his position is untenable. I dont think Jeong has won an aerial 1v1 yet, Bonetig makes him look like a junior player. Our midfield doesn’t exist essentially and we’re clueless when Mata comes off.

No wonder we didn’t get a decent crowd, there’s nothing on offer!

I think most is an over exaggeration. 😅

Lots are still local to Western Sydney, living or working (many still contributing to football!), i.e. Haliti, Cole, Beauchamp, Covic, Bridge, Golec (they’re just the ones off the top of my head).
Santalab, Covic and D’Apuzzo have been to matches at the new stadium before too.
