  • New Season Same Wanderers

The Western Sydney Wanderers kicked off their 2024/25 A-League campaign in a massive, sold out Sydney Derby clash in Parramatta tonight, the visitors taking all three points with a 2-1 win, the Wanderers showing little improvement over the team that finished in 7th place last season.

The biggest news in the lead up was national team goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas being ruled out through injury thus giving an A-League debut to 21 year old Tristan Vidackovic. There was also an A-League debut for Taewook Jeong. Off the bench there were potential A-League debuts for Dean Pelekanos and marquee attacking midfield maestro Juan Mata, with club debuts in the offing for Jordan Holmes and Ben Holliday.

Sydney FC had the opening chance of the game as they worked the ball into the penalty area, with Joe Lolley getting on the end of a blocked shot, firing it the wrong side of the near post as he slipped on the wet turf. 9 minutes in and Zac Sapsford went down after being involved in a friendly fire head clash with Gabriel Cleur.

Alexandar Popovic rescued SFC from going behind in the 15th minute, Sapsford crossed to the far post for Cleur and he reached out to loop the ball to the back stick where Hammond turned it past the SFC keeper but not strongly enough to score.

Minutes later and Sydney FC were in front. Vidackovic made a horrible pass out of the 6 yard box, giving it away to Rhyan Grant, his midfield header found Patryk Klimala unmarked, one intelligent header to the side gave Lolley space, Jack Clisby in racing back lost his footing and it was all the room Lolley needed to fire in the strike to the far post giving Vidackovic no hope to atone for his erroneous distribution.

The game flared into even more life with a pair of horrendous challenges from Sydney FC players. Klimala went into the book first and he was followed by Popovic after a wild lunge from behind into Sapsford. A melee ensued and the end result was an additional card this time for Nicolas Milanovic for joining in the fracas. Brandon Borrello continued his poor early season form by shouldering a free header on the 6 yard box that was a glorious set piece chance from a corner. Cleur was booked as well for another side lunge that stopped a promising attack. Grant also picked up a booking for his cynical foul on Hammond after he beat Cena and had Grant done for pace.

Anas Ouahim had the opportunity to double the lead after a flowing sequence where the Wanderers couldn't get a touch on the ball for several dozen passes in a row, with SFC pasing around them at all, Anthony Caceres ran into open space on the edge of the area, touched on to Ouahim but his shot went very wide with scrambling defenders jumping in to attempt to block it.

With seconds left in the half it seemed certain the Wanderers would equalise. Breaking out of their defensive zone, Milanovic lofted a ball over the top for Borrello who managed to get it into the mixer, then instead of settling for a corner after an initial clearance he kept the game going, found Hammond on his own, 8 yards out with 80% of the goal to aim for but Hammond scooped it well over the bar in a contender for the eventual worst miss of the season.

Sapsford was withdrawn after half-time, replaced by Bozhidar Kraev for his A-League debut. With Alen Stajcic in the middle of preparing the introduction of Mata, his team finally pulled off a series of passes in attack that allowed Hammond to make up for his first half miss. Sydney FC tried playing out from the back instead of clearing their lines, Costa with his back to goal failed to find a team-mate with his flick pass, instead sparking a counter for the home side. Joshua Brillante dove in to knock the ball to Kraev, he played a 1-2 pass with Milanovic, on the return he delayed long enough to open space for Borrello. Borrello was cut down by Grant for what would have been a penalty had the ball not rolled into the path of Hammond who finished unerringly at the second time of asking to make it 1-1.

Mata arrived in the 61st minute with the goalscorer Hammond coming off. His first introduction to the A-League was instantly conceded from a set piece. Playing a free kick short, Costa cut back onto his left, Mata hadn't closed down quickly enough for his lunging block to make contact, and from there it was a simple flick-on at the near post from central defender Hayden Matthews followed by Klimala stooping to conquer with a flick of his own to beat Vidackovic and leave the Wanderers and Juan Mata stunned. Klimala was robbed of another and SFC's third by a wonderful reaction save from Vidackovic, diving to his right. Pelekanos made his debut with the cramp stricken Cleur making way.

Stajcic threw on his final subs with Marcus Antonsson and Holliday making his debut, Scicluna and Borrello making way. With 4 minutes to play Sydney FC's dirty challenges were finally punished with the ultimate sanction, Max Burgess doing a Ruben Zadkovic and being sent off mere minutes after coming on for a stomping lunge. Alex King had no hestiation to pull out the red card to setup a grandstand derby finish. Andrew Redmayne became the 8th player in Alex King's notebook, his timewasting finally being punished in the 2nd minute of stoppage time.

Milanovic had been all but invisible all evening, he popped up in the 95th minute on the end of a cross that beat Grant but the contact was weak and the ball was snaffled by Redmayne. The dying seconds saw a pair of corners that even the Wanderers debutante keeper went up for, but it was to no avail as Sydney FC held on, claimed the 3 points and derby bragging rights and put the Stajcic era off on the wrong foot. It was a deserved loss for the home side, who managed just three shots on target, looked devoid of creativity for much of the game and had trouble maintaining defensive shape in the midfield & backline.

The Wanderers next match is against Western United at the Wyndham Regional facility on Sunday the 27th of October with kick-off at 4pm Sydney time.

And I believe thats what we have missed on Saturday night, we don't have the players like those 2 who can get down and dirty, win challenges comfortably. Both Jeong and Bonnetig were a bit shaky and both didn't look quite comfortable when defending against Sydney's attack.

    1. Motivation - if we concede a goal, the players shouldn't be panicking and passing out from the back just because they can't think of anything else to do

I suspect that's what they have been instructed to do.

which is a shame - the tika taka is no longer a set of tactics, but a religious orthodoxy - everyone "has" to use it

    Certainly in the A League

Clearly they are coached to do it, the one where we lost the ball and they then scored from the subsequent attack, both our centre backs were standing near the keeper for the short pass.

I'm not Shaun Dyche (honest) and I don't want to see us just smash the ball needlessly, happy for us to try and retain procession. But the short goal kick stuff is idiotic especially when the opposition have 4 players lined up across the front ready to press as soon as the keeper makes the pass.

Seriously what is the point of it? What are we trying to do? Even if it works at best we get the ball up to halfway. It's so such a low percentage play. Besides anything else we don't have the players to do it.

If you really want to get angry watch Stajic's post match presser, where he says "we know Sydney are a high pressing team, but we played about pretty well, apart from the time we lost it for the goal." Seriously what is the idiot talking about. It's like saying I knew that chainsaws are dangerous, but I juggled them pretty well apart from the one I dropped and lost my arm to.

The other thing that drove me absolutely insane the other night, was when we did work the ball well into space, we were just too slow to take advantage of it. Countless times we got Clisby free, and he took 3 touches then passed it back to where the ball had just come from. FFS just bomb towards the corner and get a cross in. Holliday did it when he came on and Antonessen nearly (probably should have scored).

Watching Shelbeyville every goal kick (or near enough) their defence would push up towards halfway ready for Redmayne to hit to half way, they hardly ever stuffed around with it.

Long balls wouldn’t have worked anyway cause we had no wide men getting up the line

Clisby killed every chance down the left to get a cross in. Numerous times he had space to bomb down the line to the corner instead he took three touches and gave it backwards. We are so incredibly slow in attack. By that I don't mean running I mean taking decisions

I don't mind that Stajic is prepared to roll the dice with selections giving Scicluna and Hammond starts. His rhetoric suggests he will be shuffling the deck selection-wise depending on the opposition. It will be refreshing to see flexibility in the playing style and I expect the squad will be more hungry overall with more players getting meaningful minutes.

Bur I do think we need to start with our most clinical options in the front third. Sapsford and Hammond show great enterprise but will not be scoring buckets of goals between them. I'd rather see a 4231 formation with  Kraev up front and Milanovic-Mata-Borello behind him. I enjoyed Cleur's energy in attack and combativeness in defence. I think Bonetig will have a breakthrough season. I didn't mind Scicluna in place of Priestman as he shows better ball control. It seems unanimous on here that Clisby massively stifles the left side attack. It would be good to see Holliday get meaningful minutes to show what he can do.

Sapsford and Hammond I think will be bouncing in and out of the line up to build up their experience. They are close to starting line up but need time to develop. Kraev should be close to starting for Western, Staj may still be conservative with Mata again need to be patient because the guy is here for a whole season not 2 games.

It would be brave of Staj to drop Clisby and play Holiday BUT I ask for caution on this change while he did do well I think we can all agree we finished stronger, almost like Sydney FC were conserving energy because of their high logistics in travel over the next few weeks with ACL 2. The last 10 minutes of the game they just decided to defend which may have allowed Holliday to look better than what he is and also the fact that Mata was more involved at the end. Just playing devil's advocate here.

With the left back role, if you watch back the 10 minutes Holiday played, he was great going forward, but he was found out quite a few times in defence, especially down in the corner, I watched it back last night and at first I hadnt realised how many times he got beat. Yep sure Clisby may have been beaten or out of position as well, but I think for 90 minutes Holiday will leak a goal or some chances down that side as he isnt a regular fullback. Interesting in most of the trial matches they actually had Simmons as the back up left back

Heard a rumour that Simmons is trying to sort a loan deal/OS move so perhaps that is why he's not been selected. :( if true

That would make sense, probably the best option for him, otherwise he may be on the bench for a while

Not to mention they were a man down too for the last 10 minutes.

its pretty disheartening the amount of negativity already created (our various platforms) after round 1.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and negativity certainly can be justified, but to be immediately on the back of the team and saying the season is over after round 1... cmon Wanderers fan - that's not us and thats not our club - this club was built on resilience and we pride ourselves of not giving up.

Bring on Round 2 - football is back

i think we need to get everyone 100% fit and performing at their best in training so Staj & co can pick and stick with a starting 11.

we've been **** for years - lets at least give Staj a chance to put his mark on the squad.

I would say a lot of our goals last season were conceded because opponents got in behind Clisby.  Either he was caught too wide or too far forward. I have no stats to back this up, it's just how I interpret it.  He also offers very little going forward.  He gets in good position but does not produce anywhere near enough quality.  IMO he doesnt defend well and he doesn't attack well.  Maybe I'm wrong or being unfair to him but nonetheless, thats how I see it.

I would be perfectly happy for Holliday to be given a spell at left back.  Even if he has work to do defensively, I'm sure he'll offer something going forward. Plus, there's more potential in Holliday than Clisby.

Clisby has had his chance and now its time for someone else.

The negativity is so over the top after 1 game. None of us know where we will end up this season, but to write us off at this stage is crazy. Long way to go yet.

people don't realise that derbies are so much different, its the game you really want to win and its the game you have to win from my perspective anyway. Obviously Staj had his reasons for not starting Juan and other things i did not agree with (long balls can **** right off) but at the end of the day like pedro said there is so long to go yet. lets all be patient and get down to commbank on the 2nd

I've got no doubt that he will learn from this as he is still young. There aren't many good LB options locally and we have seen the national team suffer for it as well as we keep relying on Aziz Behich to play that LB role.

Last season I mentioned we should have gone for Frances de Vries when he was playing in the local NZ comp as I think he is currently the best LB in the A-League with Auckland and the way how he set up that 2nd goal was class which was something we should expect from your LB and RB when they run the ball forward

Yet another show from A-league but this one belongs here. Its a tactical breakdown of the derby by Mcbreen. Hopefully helps us better understand our weaknesses.
