  • Late Draw Against For Wanderers Against City (Melbourne Branch)

    mack

A late own goal saw the Western Sydney Wanderers steal a late draw in a controversial match at the Olympic Park Showground tonight.

The game really came to life in the second half, with the ongoing saga of the awful A-League officials continuing for a second week. The first half was arguably the best effort defensively for the Wanderers this season, helped in no small part by goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson finally being given a chance in the starting lineup.

Five minutes after the resumption of play Western Sydney had the ball in the back of the net only to be denied by a blatantly incorrect offside call. Nico Martinez weaved his way through the City defence to release Kerem Bulut. The striker was clear on goal and after a great first touch he put his second below Thomas Sorensen and into the City goal. As he ran off to celebrate extensively in front of the RBB, the offside flag came down, with replays showing it was a shockingly poor decision.

Of course as luck would have it, City took the lead minutes later. Fernando Brandan crossed in from the left wing. The right foot cross looped in the air, evading the Wanderers defence. It fell luckily into the path of the Melbourne City striker, and he managed to stick out a toe, the bounce dropping perfectly to give him a tap-in.

The Wanderers came again and again, and despite a long stretch of City dominating possession, the home side stuck to their task and held the match at 0-1 until injury time. Finally, dramatically, the Red & Black onslaught paid dividends. Jack Clisby was free as a bird on the left wing, the fullbacks cross was inch perfect. Mitch Nichols & Lachlan Scott flung themselves at the ball, their movement dragging Neil Kilkenny deep into the 6 yard box. Kilkenny tried desperately to contort his body to avoid the ball but he failed, diverting the cross beyond Sorensen. A last gasp winner just eluded the Wanderers, their final chance was wasted as Scott Neville failed to find anyone with his pass inside the City penalty area.

With overall feeling of being robbed of three points, the late draw was the least the home side deserved.

The Wanderers play Brisbane Roar next Friday, the 25th of November at 7:50PM again at Sydney Showground Homebush.

It wasn't perfect last night but I saw improvements that actually make me feel better. Let's not forget that Cahill City beat us 4-1 in the FFA cup game. Maybe I'm just a 'glass half fulf' kind of guy................

Brandan beat Berisha for the amount of rolls he did, 10 out of 10 for technique.

    RBB Tyson chant - awesome.

Cahill - I was totally disgusted by his off the ball antics, should have been sent off at half time, the Legacy of Vi$ion confirmed his knobness, a very insecure and head up his arse performance. Can't wait to give him a pasting when he plays us again, would love a Tito of a $5 note with his head on it just to stick it up him for being a A...hole.

Defence was good, back four more composed.

Man crush on Nico, and King Mitch.

Agree with on Vi$ion. In any other game the incident just before halftime (I sit in the stand closest to the incident with a clear view) would be considered violent conduct from u12s up and is a red card.

The one I couldn't see was the one on Nico which drew blood. What happened with that one

I have no sympathy for an experienced assistant referee who gets offside wrong.

All Referees before the season had to learn the modification to the offside rule that was approved by IFAB

The modification was to change the office to only include scoring parts of the body so hands/arms are not included.

There was NO change to taking advantage of an offside position ala Cahill. Actually the offside should have called by Beath

The Use of the Video Assistant Referee may or may not have overturned the Bulut no-goal.

IMO the VAR would have overturned the Cahill goal as an OBVIOUS ERROR.

I was happy the boys put in a good defensive performance. The whole back 5 were good and should have had a clean sheet.

The incident with Nico was an honest accidental glancing elbow to the head. The skin is pretty thin there, and it doesn't take much to draw blood. You can tell from the reaction of both players that there wasn't anything in it. Just one of those things.

Chips on a stick is an interesting snack, as for the game we were robbed by the linesman and changed the momentum of the game from quality to $ity slowing the tempo and we didn't have the puff to keep going. Lucky to get a late draw but well in to Scott and only decent cross whipped in,we are horrible at crossing and every time we get in a position we don't wip it in or try and miss the mark.

Finally Tyson gets a go and our d stepped up tonight shutting down the best striker in the game. Plenty to build on and feel for Bulut who went off tap celebration only to turn around and be robbed.

Roar will be a good battle but hate Friday night games as traffic was a nightmare.

I'm not going ga-ga like most posts over this overall performance at all. Just shows how much our standards and expectations have fallen.

The period after City scored was some of the worst stumblebum football I have seen from the team. No idea in attack , misplaced passes , structure all over the place and they were just toying with us. Luckily they didn't score and an own goal got us a point.

Our set pieces are of pub team standard and a indictment on the coaching.

We need a huge improvement overall to become a side to be feared , like we once were.

That period was a masterclass in possession...

We were also terrible during that phase. The first three times Sotirio touched the ball he gave it straight back but he wasn't the only one. We couldn't string more than 2 passes together as a team.

The positive was that we managed to hang on thru it and come back strongly in the last 10 mins.

Just watched the highlights clip on SBS on demand and Lucy's interviews with Bulut, Popa, and Cahill. No mention of the Cahill incident just before half time.

Cahill says some nice stuff, which was very nice of him

Massive concern is where have all our fans gone? We've been touting ourselves as the best in the country but in reality we have less regular attendees than the Vic, The Roar and yes, Sydney FC :(

As 3k or so tickets were sold for this it means only around 11k of our 'members' showed up. A new 35k stadium? Apart from the Derby surely we are having a laugh.  I don't get this build it and they will come mantra. Maybe the initial gloss of the club being founded has worn off for a lot of people?

And yes I know the Smurfs are flying right now but it's only the start of the season ffs. How many are we going to get in February if we are still struggling down in 7-8th?

It is a concern, maybe some excuses are :

    #We're not winning

    #It's not Parramatta

    #It was a Friday night

#Public transport is useless (I got home just before midnight)

    #It was really hot

All excuses but I'm sure some were the reason so many stayed away.

yeah even Roar got closer to 20K  for the fixture, i'm shocked at how low it was but who knows of our 18K members 5K might not have full season membership, it's looking more likely given our home crowds have been low thus far.

Not rocket science - it's because we are not winning.

Our fans are not immune from staying away if the team is playing poorly. I remember we once got a crowd of just over 5,000

for an ACL match at Parramatta at a stage when the team was playing poorly.

Well i guess there might be people like us that reverted to supporter membership this season for whatever reason.

I am hoping to be back on board with the WSWBoro family from Gosford in a few weeks, wont be at the game next Friday either.

But yes, my family is responsible for at least 3 missing at the min.

    Positives

    - Better defending by Aspro and Borda. They both kept Fornaroli and Brendan quiet.

    - Pinateres did a lot of dirty work in the midfield and it was good to see him clatter Cahill in the first half

    - Tyson did ok, he was confident, commanded the box more than Redmayne did. Didnt had to do too much last night

    - Martinez keeps getting better and better each game. He is a classy player and I am amazed how he keeps control of the ball and challenged by the defenders

    - Scott looks very energetic when he gets the ball. Liked how he put the pressure on Kilkenny to score that own goal in injury time.

    - Neville made some great runs in attack and defended pretty well.

    - Clisby did well to contain Kamau and his cross for our goal was superb

    - Bulut got into good space for his goal that should have stood and he remained composed to put that away. Such a shame that was disallowed as I thought he deserves that goal.

    Negatives:

    - Tim Cahill

    - The ***** ref, we win the ball, its a free kick to City, city put a challenge on us, they get a free kick, city players fall down they get a free kick, the antics of city players after the first goal was pathetic, beath was easily fooled by city's diving.

    - Tim Cahill

    - Bulut's disallowed goal, should have stood as he was clearly onside, it seems the refs have already made the decision that he is already offside before he makes his run, the AR called it way too early and it should have been the benefit of the doubt to us.

    - Tim Cahill

    - Dimas's set piece, we had 2 direct free kicks and both free kicks were taken by Dimas and both times they've hit the wall, his corners are very ordinary, I'd like to see Martinez take the set piece duties.

    - Tim Cahill

    - Nichols needs a stint on the bench, his decision making in the final 3rd and wasting chances kills our momentum and its frustrating.

    - Tim Cahill

I will be hated for saying this...and it's just as well the Fapman isn't around still to gloat....but a lot of what he pointed out (when he wasn't merely **** stirring, but was actually trying to point out reality) addressed this issue.

As a support base, we (along with the Victory supporters) are the most passionate and loyal in the country.

But the dizzying heights we reached in that first season or two, and the fact that many had waited a lifetime to find what came out way,  inflated our expectations and our self image.

It was inevitable that we'd come down from those dizzy heights... and although we will continue to be a big club with passionate supporters, we're in for a period of less intense growth and less of that fanatical, obsessive support that existed in the first couple of seasons.

Hopefully when we get back "home" it will be onward and upward, but I think while we're away from Parra, people will not see skipping a game here or there as the sacrilege it once was for many.

     My 2 cents worth.

It would be good of we could email Peacock or Bozza(although he is friends with Cahill) so they can give their opinion on Shootout. I imagine that they will talk about the possibility of La Rocca being cited , but what about Cahill.

I have been trying to find their email (as I'm not on Twitter).

If the FFA wants to remove the image of favouring City they have to do something...(I know.... wishful thinking)

Fapman predicted we would have way less than what we are getting now. He also predicted the fizzling of the active support yet it has been consistent. Not in his wildest dreams did he think we would have 18000 members at this point. He was only right when stating the obvious, fans like winners. People not showing up isn't a WSW, it's a N.S.W thing. The crowd we got last night was no lower than a realist would have expected.

    Season averages for us:

    1. 14,749

    2. 15,171

    3. 12, 520 (lost most games, came second last, Fapman's predictions were way off with this one)

    4. 14,711

This year  25, 382 (thanks to the derby) but we got 14,000 last night which is our overall average.

Fapman can't come back and gloat because going by these figures, he was wrong.

People are asking where our fans have gone. Looking at the figures they haven't gone anywhere and are still here the same as always.

for an ACL match at Parramatta at a stage when the team was playing poorly.

I think that's largely it. There are lots of other reasons people aren't coming (some valid).

The security situation with RBB end, which reminds me, was it better this week? Can anybody down that end confirm? But that might be keeping some of the most hardcore away but it doesn't account for the 1000s missing.

Public Transport is bad, they do a good job of getting you out of Olympic Park to lidcombe but then after that the trains don't match up, this added with the later kick off means people aren't getting home until gone midnight.

SoP is a bit of a blackhole, but to be honest that just requires a change in routine (drink / eat in lidcombe get the train in just before kick off and then get the hell out of there)

All of that is secondary to not winning. If we had Sydney's results this season we would have 20,000 there last night.

Our core support is about 10,000 maybe 11,000 i.e. the people that turn up win or lose for weekend games (midweek ACL in a monsoon is another story).

Like I said in a early post Spotless has potential atmosphere wise, when the equaliser last night went in the place came alive. If we were playing good football and wining, crowds will come up and the place will rock (it's really not that bad a stadium)

For mine so far this season is looking like a missed opportunity to grow supporter base, but our results haven't been good. It doesn't need a shiney "big name" marquee to lift the gates (hasn't really lifted City's) and i don't think Cahill being there added many to the gate. People like winning (and yes Sydney people are more fickle than most).

Hopefully that equaliser is a bit of a turning point we can get a couple of decent results and hand in the top 4-6 until Jan, pick up a player or two and make a late season push.

And yes I know the Smurfs are flying right now but it's only the start of the season ffs. How many are we going to get in February if we are still struggling down in 7-8th?

Yeah I don't think our core support who will turn up regardless is any more than about 10K. Victory's is a few K but their crowds dropped too when they were garbage under magilton - derby crowds and membership numbers give a false sense.

OK it's Saturday morning and I'm still giggling like a girl at the Mooy banner.

    Brilliant, just brilliant,

I missed the Mooy banner. Anyone got a pic?
