  • Heartless Wanderers Out Of FFA Cup

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers failed yet again in the FFA Cup, losing with a disgraceful performance in a 4-1 scoreline against Melbourne City.

The opening goal came for the home side from an unusual, but spectacular source. Debutant central defender Michael Jakobsen made his way into the penalty area on a free kick. After some defensive chaos in the box the ball looped in the air and Jakobson scored with an outrageous overhead kick.

The Wanderers were completely outplayed in the first 20 minutes, Dimas Delgado could easily have cost his side a second. On the ball having dropped back into the central defensive line, he slipped and gave the ball away to Bruno Fornaroli, but the goal was called back for a fould on Dimas.

Jumpei Kusukami had the first real shot in anger for the visitors, after City failed to quickly mark up from a corner, he took a blistering shot from beyond the penalty area that Sorensen palmed away at the near post. The Wanderers should have been given a penalty when Scott Neville was barged over in the penalty box but the referee waved it away.

City took a two goal advantage on the half-hour, Nikolai Topor-Stanley couldn't keep the ball away from Luke Brattan, who quickly fired the ball into the box, that none of the defence could manage to stop. Tim Cahill sent a cut-back for a tap-in from a meter out that Fornaroli couldn't miss.

Topor-Stanley capped off the worst individual performance for the Wanderers in their short history by managing to get himself sent off before half-time after being destroyed for pace by Fornaroli, he shoved over the attacker, not making any attempt to play the ball at all, and was rightly sent off. Tim Cahill converted the penalty.

It was 4-0 after an hour. The Wanderers defence fell asleep, leaving players unmarked in the box, City whipped in a cross, Fornaroli managed to hit Redmayne with his header, only for it to bounce off the post to the feet of Fernando Brandan who slotted it into the open net.

Dimas & Shannon Cole combined to pull a goal back for a 4-1 scoreline. Cole put in a great cross to an unmarked Dimas at the back post, and the defensive midfielder made no mistake with the header. Thankfully the rest of the game passed without much incident.

The Wanderers were never in the game from the opening whistle and Topor-Stanley's decision to get himself sent off handed Melbourne City the game and must be punished by team management. Apart from Nichols & Bulut the rest of the side were either invisible or costing the side goals, and changes must be rung if the side is to have any hope of winning the first round Derby against Sydney FC.

But it's a quarter final in a cup comp. it's something that would be nice to win... Next year :)

I didn't say it's not important or that its not worth winning. I'm saying it's not as important as the League - no other competition is - including the ACL.

[Edit: I don't suggest that Erebus thinks that the league is less important the cup either. I'm debating that I would much rather take a 4-1 loss in a league cup than I would in the league. If you cop a 4-1 loss in the league there are bigger problems at stake in my eyes.]

For those defending Redmayne.... Just go back to last season and look at how many points he cost us... Watch last nights replay and tell me his decision making and control of HIS area was worthy of a professional footballer. It was embarrassing. Our defence was terrible but when you have no confidence in your keeper this will happen, as you're constantly caught out of position because of the keepers dud decisions (look at 1st goal)...Pathetic decision to dive forward like that unless you're 100% going to clear it....what was he thinking. I'm sure the players standing rooted to the ground were dumbstruck with what they just witnessed.

I am a firm believer in that when we lost Sir Ante we also lost one of the greatest goal keeper coaches this country has ever seen and I'm sorry but Spider will never know what Ron Corry knows when it comes to keepers in this country, no matter how many years he sticks at it.

Cant ever recall walking out of the stadium and thinking, wow Redmayne saved us today. How many times did you think the opposite of Covic

If NTS was going to go out and put in that kind of shift he might at least have done something useful like going in studs up on Fornaroli or Cahill and kept one of them out until the far side of Xmas with the added bonus of watching Van t Schip explode post match. That would at least have had an end product, if you are gonna lope around looking for an early shower at least go out with something worth it by collecting someone.

lol there is your mistake if you hold every players expectations against players that have done for us what covic has done, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment

didnt realise it was the keepers job to win the game for us each week, if the defense does its job the keeper should be able to lie down and have a nap.

redmayne gets no respect from topor nor does topro listen to him (witch makes his job 10 times harder) i am not saying redmayne is amazing and god's gift but he is a quality keeper and to many times i hear people put the blame on him and do not look at the defensively line. the biggest issue we had last night and it seems to be the norm now is that our defensively line (including redmayne) were not one unit, there is no respect no team work. the unit is to blame all 5 defensive players (even the midfeild at times especially last night). replacing redmayne or topor will not necesarly fix the problem, we need better communication from all parties and need to work more as a unit.

I'm pretty sure with the ACL this campaign, popa would've put FFA cup last on the priority list. Remember the year we lost to Adelaide City?

Could it be the case that we've focused more on a brutal pre-season training schedule and possibly all our boys were still suffering with heavy legs for this game?

Possibly, but the concerning thing for me last night was that Popa was quoted as saying he was going to name his strongest possible lineup.

It may or may not have been, but it was damned close to it.

If that's the case, I would have at least liked to have been competitive.

    That we weren't.

NTS also had an opportunity to take Bratten out, before he set up the 2nd goal last night.

He chose not too & instead, protected himself from being nutmegged.

That type of behaviour, is not becoming of a leader

We played like a busted ass and got punished, simple as that. No need for such an intense postmortem.

Just checked the replays of the goals.

    Every one redmaynes fault

    1. 5 blokes watched the ball sail across them

    2. As Taurus says, topor poor in making the tackle

    3. Topor pushes bruno

    4. Borda watches Brandan like he was watching TV

    Get a grip you blokes

Redmayne saved us points on plenty of occasions. Pretty sure JAR on ATB highlighted them when it happened.

Completely different. At the time, we were in the later KO stages of the ACL. This time, the ACL doesn't even start for another 4 months. The FFA Cup will be over within a month from now.

They don't overlap at all and one shouldn't affect the other.

I agree, that way he could end up with a job coaching Victory.

I've never turned off a WSW game early and have always suffered the entire match. I was close to not watching the 2nd half because there was no way we were coming back from that.

To be fair though we were down 2-0 against the Phoenix and won, and then 3-0 down against Roar in the semi final and won (eventually)

Surely even if we go down during the game there should be some confidence that something special might happen

    I can sense a shift.

    A frustration growing.

Has Popa neglected obvious flaws in the squad?

Can we see a pattern in his transfer strategy? His style?

many times our boys had the chance to take out an attacking player and they pussied out. Hammil should have snapped that diving bastard Kamau in half a few times but he's a ******* cat.

I have no confidence whatsoever in Redmayne. He was crap at City, he is only slightly better with us. The first goal he totally misjudged the cross. It looked like he managed to get his hands on it. He only Parry's the ball and it unluckily hits one of our players. By this stage Redmayne is in no man's land. Ok still a good finish but if you are going to come out like that you need to do a better job of collecting that ball, or you just stay on your line. The second goal he again misjudges and the ball rolls in front of him but this time he doesn't get a glove on it all. Stranded yet again for an easy tap in. Maybe I am being harsh but to me he looked partly to blame for those two goals.

Now I am always willing to give all our players a fair shake but this was also happening far too frequently even last season. Believe me when I say that Popa won't put up with this for too long and I think Redmayne will soon find his natural position.......on the bench.
