  • Heartless Wanderers Out Of FFA Cup

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers failed yet again in the FFA Cup, losing with a disgraceful performance in a 4-1 scoreline against Melbourne City.

The opening goal came for the home side from an unusual, but spectacular source. Debutant central defender Michael Jakobsen made his way into the penalty area on a free kick. After some defensive chaos in the box the ball looped in the air and Jakobson scored with an outrageous overhead kick.

The Wanderers were completely outplayed in the first 20 minutes, Dimas Delgado could easily have cost his side a second. On the ball having dropped back into the central defensive line, he slipped and gave the ball away to Bruno Fornaroli, but the goal was called back for a fould on Dimas.

Jumpei Kusukami had the first real shot in anger for the visitors, after City failed to quickly mark up from a corner, he took a blistering shot from beyond the penalty area that Sorensen palmed away at the near post. The Wanderers should have been given a penalty when Scott Neville was barged over in the penalty box but the referee waved it away.

City took a two goal advantage on the half-hour, Nikolai Topor-Stanley couldn't keep the ball away from Luke Brattan, who quickly fired the ball into the box, that none of the defence could manage to stop. Tim Cahill sent a cut-back for a tap-in from a meter out that Fornaroli couldn't miss.

Topor-Stanley capped off the worst individual performance for the Wanderers in their short history by managing to get himself sent off before half-time after being destroyed for pace by Fornaroli, he shoved over the attacker, not making any attempt to play the ball at all, and was rightly sent off. Tim Cahill converted the penalty.

It was 4-0 after an hour. The Wanderers defence fell asleep, leaving players unmarked in the box, City whipped in a cross, Fornaroli managed to hit Redmayne with his header, only for it to bounce off the post to the feet of Fernando Brandan who slotted it into the open net.

Dimas & Shannon Cole combined to pull a goal back for a 4-1 scoreline. Cole put in a great cross to an unmarked Dimas at the back post, and the defensive midfielder made no mistake with the header. Thankfully the rest of the game passed without much incident.

The Wanderers were never in the game from the opening whistle and Topor-Stanley's decision to get himself sent off handed Melbourne City the game and must be punished by team management. Apart from Nichols & Bulut the rest of the side were either invisible or costing the side goals, and changes must be rung if the side is to have any hope of winning the first round Derby against Sydney FC.

Thought that was a kind summing up mack, you could have gone in harder lol

Matches against the Nix where we got turned over the Nix had like 4 chances and scored with them all, even though were were flat also. This was different, really awful defending, didn't need this going in to the derby.

Popa has some ******* work to do here!!!

Can we start with Redmayne and just replace him with a youth Keeper. They would do a better job. He is utter ****.

In my opinion, the result is a sign of poor off-season recruitment, we lost pace in the defensive wing backs, and replaced Jamo with Clisby.. We're so overstocked with CBs! Hamill or another player of our oversupplied centre backs isn't going to cut it in the LB or Rb position...

Also on the wings, we didn't sign a natural winger in the off-season. Lustica and Jumpei aren't natural wingers.. They play in the midfield!

Our team is like a helicopter, we have no wings in attack and defence, we're very vulnerable in those areas. You noticed city attacked us on the sides and we couldn't keep up. Going to be a long season as other teams have improved majorly.

With the red card to NTS, doesn't look like he'll be leaving anytime soon, no one would want him and his high wage at the age he is at.

With NTS now missing the Derby, it may just be a blessing in disguise and give game time to Aspro in such a big game.. Aspro could only gain experience. NTS will fall down in the pecking order of centrebacks we have.

Lastly, city just controlled possession and we're too fast for us. Felt like possession has 65/35 city's way. The lack of pace in our squad is going to hurt us big time.

    As for Redmayne, no comment.

I'm sure we'll go nuts if Tyson starts the Derby. Tyson has technically not yet conceded a goal playing a competitive match for us.

Queue in the Popa out comments.

    End rant..

Hopefully just an off game and not a sign of things to come.

We've been conceding a lot of goals as of late.

I went to the game and we were embarrassing in the first half.

Our attempts to play from he back were pathetic and put us under so much unessesary pressure.

Not sure who 17 was but he looked out of his depth .

The second half we looked a lot more composed and structured.

Not reading too much into this game.

Does NTS miss round 1 for a Red in the FFA cup?

I assume NTS was given a red as the new LOTG haven't come into effect yet?

    Yes

It still would've been a red even with the new laws.

The only difference is that if you attempt a tackle then you get a yellow not a red.

Topor just shoved the guy in the back as he was about to shoot. That's a red card in either version.

The NTS red card was reminiscent of his dumb red card against Adelaide on 2014/15. That occasion was during a ridiculous schedule and the CWC payment disputed was going on in the background, he has no excuses for this red card. Bitterly disappointed with his careless shove in the back to get himself sent off

His ******* mind has gone, he wants out but can't find a way and Popa hasn't got a ******* clue what to do with him. NTS has only been here in body and not mind since half way through last season to be fair.

Not sure if he wants out, I know he knows the club doesn't want him and his attitude shows just that.

    Bright side?

    * Bulut didn't get into trouble. haha

    * Cole's movement was good when he came on.

    * Jumpei can beat a man. Final ball a bit lacking, but he'll create some stuff this year.

    * Dimas got better once he got into the game.

    * The two new Spanish speakers got another game under their belt and didn't totally embarrass themselves. I thought that Pinatares showed some decent little balls over the top that Bulut might get onto once they play more together.

    * Baccus looked sharp and positive.

    * It was probably the final nail in Topor's WSW coffin.

    ...on the not-so-bright side

    * You can't play out from the back with two defenders on the same side who can't pass and have no attacking ability. Missing Jamo big time. Have to find a solution. Plenty of CB options. Cole would be better at LB.

    * We are one class attacker short, and that's with Nico. And he better be bloody good! Because without him there is too much pressure on Nichols to be the fulcrum of the attack - Jumpei is a beat-your-man type player and Lustica is a squaddie. Mitch doesn't want to sit in the hole and be a playmaker, it's not his go. He needs a foil, someone who moves and creates space for him to glide down the wing or pop up in the centre etc. Vidosic and Bridge, and to a lesser extent Romeo, could all do that. Cole would be better than Lustica - his movement will free up some space for Mitch. Lustica adds nothing. He's a solid backup if people are injured.

    * Redmayne average. I don't have the hate for him that some do - I think he's adequate - but he was flapping on some of those crosses. I put more blame on the team for getting into situations where the balls coming in are dangerous, but he didn't cover himself in glory tonight, that's for sure.

    * We are going to have to listen to commentators kissing Cahill's arse all year. Oh god. If they keep banging on about this City team that has been unfairly put together I'm going to start calling them the Greater Melbourne Giants.

    * Since when did the big-head decide to take penalties? Didn't see him putting his hand up when we needed him to against Uruguay, did we? He let ******* Tony Vidmar have a crack before him! Now he comes back as the marquee and wants the glory.

Baccas was a standout for the short time he was on. Lively, fought for everything.

Shannon comes on and we score a goal. Happens all the time, and he's not always involved in the goal either. Read into that what you will, but when we go 2-0 down, he needs to come on so we get a quick response.

The Mitch / Bulut partnership will be deadly. They weren't quite there tonight, but plenty to be positive about I think.

Great effort by the travelling fans to get there for a mid week game. And a special thank you to all the employers who helped out by funding travel and / accommodation. Much appreciated :good:

City are still s**t. Not as s**t as one J Gillette, but getting there. I hope they choke on their moneybags of oil.
