  • Five Star Wanderers Smash Adelaide Out Of Cup

    mack

Western Sydney Wanderers took on Adelaide United at Marconi Stadium in the Australia Cup Round of 16 match, and turned in a scintillating performance, Marcus Antonsson and Brandon Borrello both picking up a brace with Milos Ninkovic scoring his first for the Wanderers to demolish Adelaide by 5 goals to 1.

5 goal hero Lachie Brook was absent due to his Olyroos callup while Doni Grdic dropped to the bench after struggling with an ankle injury. He was replaced in the starting lineup by the youngster Alex Bonetig. Marcus Antonsson made his first start for the Wanderers after his substitute appearance against Floreat.

It took all of a minute for the Wanderers to hit the front. Jack Clisby picked up a cross from the other side of the pitch, took a touch and whipped in a vicious cross to the 6 yard box. Joe Gauci was caught on his heels and was late to the ball, missing it entirely while Antonsson didn't, knocking it past the keeper to make it 1-0 after 1 minute and 26 seconds. Clisby continued his marauding in the 5th minute, getting on the end of a pass and firing a curling shot toward Gauci and this time the Adelaide keeper held on to it.

WSW went on the attack again the 18th minute, picking up the ball from the Adelaide defence who panicked, with Brandon Borrello being played in but offside, only for Alexander Popovic's heavy tackle on Josh Brillante in the lead up being judged as a foul and a yellow card. The free kick was harmless, off the wall from Borrello and then kicked out of play off the rebound by Clisby.

The Wanderers lighting attack doubled the lead in the 37th minute. Brillante initiated a sweeping left flank attack by finding Clisby in space. Clisby played it on to Ninkovic and the midfielders unsighted reverse pass found Antonsson beautifully, the Swede's cutback gave Borrello a chance and the Wanderers talisman took a touch to open the space on the right peg and fired home to make it 2-0.

Antonsson nearly had his second 5 minutes from half-time with Borrello laying a cross along the face of the goal but agonisingly out of reach of the attacker. Lawrence Thomas had little to do so far in the match and he almost coughed up what would have been a near certain equaliser, misplaying a back pass and inviting Ben Halloran into a challenge with the ball flying out for a reliving goal kick.

If Adelaide had a lot of work to do after the second goal, Antonsson gave them what looked like an insurmountable task seconds before half-time. Marcelo launched a long ball over the top of the Adelaide defence, Antonsson brought it down perfectly, one touch to place it onto the right foot and the second to fire it past Gauci who dived the wrong way. 3-0 at the break, Adelaide far off the pace and not in the contest at all.

Adelaide weren't good enough in the first half and their second half started just as poorly. Milos Ninkovic scoring his first goal in Red & Black in the 53rd minute, a right flank raid ending with Ninkovic unmarked and with all the time in the world he steadied himself and passed it into the far side netting to make it 4-0. Carl Veart had seen enough, pulling Isias and Popovic in exchange for Barr & Alagich.

Shortly before the hour Borrello had his 2nd, and the Wanderers fifth as Tom Beadling pulled out a through ball that would impress Xavi, from deep in his own half he curled a ball along the deck, scything through the central defence, Borrello was through on goal and lobbed Gauci, the ball taking two bounces with the second spinning back to hit the goalpost and nestle in the back of the net.

Adelaide had their best chance of the night with Bernando getting on a long ball from Barr, the flyer beat Thomas who rushed out of the penalty area but did enough to put off the Adelaide attacker without giving away what would have been a certain red card, giving Clisby enough time to get back and shield the ball over the byline for a goal kick.

Oscar Preistman and Marcus Younis made their way onto the field in the 72nd minute with Dylan Pierias and Tom Beadling given early marks. 10 minutes from time Zac Sapsford came on for Antonsson & Gabriel Cleur on for Aidan Simmons. Adelaide picked up a consolation goal in the 80th minute, taking advantage of Cleur misplaying a ball deep in the Adelaide half, they counter-attacked with a heavy strike that Thomas could only parry into the path of Zac Clough and he couldn't miss the open net. Neither team would add further to the scoreline and the Wanderers closed off their thumping victory to progress to the last 8.

The draw for the Quarter Final will take place following the final 3 games of the round tomorrow night.

The last games in this round are played tomorrow so you'd assume right after that.

I know Adelaide United might of been missing some key players like Ibusuki, Irankunda, Duzel, Van Der Saag & Ansell. But that performance from them was a trainwreck. I know some clubs treat this Australia Cup slightly different in comparison to the A-League but they have not signed anyone yet for this upcoming season and I have say they might need to pull their finger out and sign some players otherwise I can't see them making finals football.

Anyway, enough about them. More about the Wanderers. You couldn't ask for a much better performance that. Just pure dominance tonight and I feel the very early goal inflated Adelaide immediately. Antonsson is a going to be a big signing.

So keen for the upcoming season.

Very very good. You’d have to think the team will only get better from here with more additions. Maybe we won’t be as bad as we’re all anticipating

On a side note - anyone else think Bozanic is going to get the antonis treatment this season? Pictured in training and not even made the bench for any of these games

They had some players out but when you compare their starting lineup tonight to their final against the Mariners last season there's only 3 changes. Bovalina for Lopez at right back, Yull for D'Arrigo and Bernardo for Alagich in midfield. Maybe they're a bit behind in preseason and will come good but they looked like an NPL side when compared to us tonight.

What a ball for the 4th goal. Very Mary Fowler-esque, I must say.

Also after watching a month of women's football, still getting used to watch non-women's football again. I'm expecting everyone to have ponytails basically, but nope.

Also Antonsson looks the goods, the touch for his second goal was *chef's kiss*

That win had JP's footprint all over it. Some non-negotiables regarding effort areas, especially off the ball, is the foundation to any successful team.

I hope the 3 remaining VISA players, aren't 30 something year old duds, that will disrupt this playing style.

CCM won the comp last season with a youthful, no frills squad "on paper". We should follow suit.

    Antonsson looks good.

As far as those 3 players go, to me it seems like theres 3 obvious areas if we are going to continue with the 442. We need a CB (non negotiable), a CM (lacking depth there) and a LM/RM.

    - The issue of the CB, Marcelo seems to have a calming influence on his defensive partner. He's played fantasically with whoever sits next to him. Beadling looked the good there. But if we can bring someone else who can take that leadership role should Marcelo get injured, that would be great.

    - CM - I cant decide if Beadling or Brillante will keep their spots should we bring in a foreign player that is a step above. But we cant go into the season with only Oscar Priestman for depth.

    - LM/RM - Brook and Pierias bring something entirely different to Ninko. All 3 clearly have a place but im not sure they would be the ones to take us back to a top 2 finish. Again, we need depth but surely this is a position we can elevate.

    Where is Tate Russell?

Dunno, but im not sure he's getting much of a sniff unless he can all of a sudden become left footed. Simmo was stellar last night. Closed down Socceroos left winger and still had the energy to attack all night. We have basically no depth at LB other thana  kid. Maybe he can get a look in there? Shoe horn option for sure but thats my only idea

    This.

If this means we only take 2 visas till Jan window i can live with that.

Really need CM and probably a CB.

And I think our young boys of the bench are quality.

Great win last night give the lads come confidence and more importantly another competitive match leading into the season.

Simmons I hope, keeps his spot moving forward he had a fantastic match. Nice to see some attacking football playing and being sound at back.

was good performance last night. Adelaide still in pre season mode aside from Bernardo but Clisby quickly got onto him. They couldn't deal with the pace we had that forced them back. Goodwin was deep to help against Pierias and Borrello and Kitto never got beyond the half way line. Isiais was scrambling as our boys act like wolves circling their prey to win the ball back.

We saw the very best of Ninko yesterday he really had a field day yesterday and finally got his goal.

Atonsson was great and will give Riera a run for his money. It was very good signs how he made space, defended the ball and strength in the air. That along with Borello next to him doing Borello things and it was really good.

Onto the Quarters lets see how we draw and hopefully we can go all the way.

It's a bit of a mystery isn't it. He got barely any game time last season. When he did play he was solid, so the shut out doesn't appear to be match day performance related. Maybe he is not putting in enough effort at training for Rudan's liking?

There was a distinct and surprising lack of intensity from Adelaide. They did start slow last season as well, it wasn't till after Xmas that they went on that winning run. Gotta think that it is down to the difference in approach to preseason. Rudan has that Gold Coast boot camp, which has us fit and firing at the outset. Remember that even with Krpic leading the line last season, we jumped out of the blocks and took an early lead in the league.

I don’t think United expected our on-slaught from the get go, the first goal under 90 seconds put them on the back foot for the whole game.

Normally in the Aus cup, we’re in pre-season mode but it appears we’re ready for the season, it’s reminding me of how Arsene Wenger once labelled us ‘ready’ when we played Arsenal in 2017. We looked against them until Popa walks out 1 week before the season begins.

100% it does, him and Musky were a force to be reckoned with at MV. I was happy to have him at our club, I was even more happy he took on the caretaker role after Babbel left, I don’t know what happened in pre-season that forced him out of the club and replace with the dud Carl Robinson. But JPdM is in a similar mould that Muscat is which both no non-sense coaches.

Last night was impressive. There were signs in the previous round but as it was against weak NPL opposition it was difficult to gauge how good.  I agree that we now appear to have a quality finisher at last and I thought that Brillante was generally excellent at the heart of midfield. Simmons looked the part and for all the flak he gets I reckon Clisby will be a big asset this season. Ninko has been more involved in these 2 games which is a real bonus. Whilst they did OK, for mine Pierias and Beadling will only serve as squaddies this season.

Unreal performance. Very excited to see who we get in the draw tonight.

The high pressing football we are opting to play is highly effective, especially in pre-season. Turnovers are more likely as teams aren't sharp yet or still in pre-season mode, and we have enough going forward to counter quick and score.

Borrello and Antonsson look super dangerous and work well in this system. The way they all interchange is wonderful and makes it tough for the opposition defence to mark and keep everything settled. Crazy to think Brook wasn't even involved. Pierias did a lot better than his first game, he is absolutely rapid.

Big shout out to Jack Clisby, he looks like a new player to the one I remember a good 4-5 years ago. Defensively sound but offers a lot going forward, both from set pieces and his crossing is fantastic.

Marcelo is unbelievably good for many reasons, but one thing that always stands out for me is his ability to make his centreback partner 10 times better. When I saw Bonetig starting I was sceptical but he was calm, composed knowing he had Marcelo next to him.

Simmons kept the best winger in the league in his pocket, and attacked well. A positive welcome back for the kid, I believe this was his first game back since the NPL Derby in which he was sent off at leftback.

Beadling was really solid again, his ball through to Borrello for the 5th goal was one of the best passes i've seen live. Cut straight through the whole midfield and defence. Brillante next to him was very tidy as well and wasn't showing any signs of being a 'has been' like the Vuck fans were suggesting. I suspect this was due to playing 3 years under Popovic, not many can do it, a lot of players look mentally and physically exhausted after multiple season with Popa.

Ninkovic is still so classy, finally, FINALLY a goal! He does things no other player in the league can do even at his age. Such an intelligent footballer. P.s thanks for the Aus Cup Quarter Final banner ;)

Good atmosphere, at a great venue and overall a fantastic night.

We need to ask SMFC Mike for the manual crowd count with a 4% margin of error to get the accurate crowd figures

    • I think Waddingham will do ok, he is a proper striker. Yengi has the first touch of a trampoline, that said I did dig him at WSW, his main advantage seemed to be that defenders didn't know what he would do next, although largely that was because he didn't either
    • We are down as we are losing almost every home game. It is as simple as that. Big Derby crowd round 1 to watch us meekly roll over and our drawcard marquee player play 19mins.   Not to sound like a Kopite or Man U supporter but the league as a whole needs a strong winning WSW. We win games and stray playing well and our crowd could average 20000+. Melbourne city win the league and nobody cares
