  • Elsey Send Off Sends Off 2018 With Draw

    The Western Sydney Wanderers ended the year of 2018 with a disappointing 2-2 draw against a 10 man Adelaide United.

    With Vedran Janjetovic suspended, and Danijel Nizic left in Sydney with an apparent back strain, it was a debut for young keeper Nick Suman with the rest of the lineup a typical Wanderers 4231 formation. The first half was a fast flowing affair with both teams looking to attack. The desire wasn't matched with quality on the ball however, with the main incident of note in the first half-hour being a yellow card to Jordan Elsey for a elbow to the head of Oriol Riera.

    Minutes before the break the Wanderers were making all the play, first Riera headed a ball into the hands of Paul Izzo, then minutes later Riera headed to the spot. Tarek Elrich stole in on the blindside of Adelaide defender Nathan Konstandopoulos who instead of clearing the ball away, collected Elrich's feet. Riera hit the penalty to Izzo's right side, it was saved by the keeper but Riera tucked away the rebound with a neat left foot.

    Having taken so long to break the deadlock, it took only 2 minutes to restore it in the second half. Adelaide spread the ball wide, Scott Galloway delivered a low cross into the area, it took a deflection off Josh Risdon, and dribbled into the penalty area, neatly trisecting between Patrick Ziegler, Brendan Hamill and Suman giving Nikola Mileusnic a tap-in on the goal-line.

    Nileusnic had a brace and Adelaide the lead in the 55th minute, Tarek Elrich was completely destroyed for pace, the Wanderers fullback offering no resistance against the flying winger who latched onto a wonderful ball from Isaías, and Suman was beaten between his legs.

    Jordan Elsey, having failed to take into account the lesson from the first yellow card, did exactly the same thing on the hour mark, he rose for a header with Riera in front of him, and locked an elbow into the side of Riera's head to allow him to head the ball away. The linesman and referee conversed, and gave Elsey his second yellow, followed shortly by the obligatory red card and his exit turned the game in favour of the visiting side.

    The Wanderers took full advantage mere moments later. With Adelaide still reeling from the red card, Josh Risdon found acres of space on the right flank, he was found by Keanu Baccus, and a simple lay-off from Risdon to Kamau was met with a good first touch to bring the ball onto his right foot and he lashed home the equaliser.

    Despite taking control of the game, the Wanderers weren't able to make their pressure count for a 3rd goal, and the scrambling defence of the Wanderers did enough to prevent Adelaide from stealing all three points. While Adelaide would be happy enough that the point gave them outright 6th position on the table, it did nothing for the Wanderers who remain locked in 8th position, leaving them to wonder if they should support Brisbane or Sydney in that clash on Saturday the 29th.

    The Wanderers face Melbourne City on Tuesday the 1st of January, 7:50pm EDT at the Homebush Olympic Stadium.

    so just how is babbel better than gombau? stats wise he is worse and he had an actual pre season

     

    but he is german so he has to be a football genius right?

    The two squads we've had would make Pep Guardiola and Marco Bielsa look ****. However, his recruitment needs to be absolutely 100% spot on for 12 to 15 players next year (the youth should be able to fill in past that).

    Also, I think the A-League is breaking Babbel's brain. The A-League is a seeing eye puzzle that's driving him insane. Stuff like in-game interviews during a cup game, or half-time interviews, or international tournaments during the season would be considered insane in Europe.

    I think after Gumby many here would of been happy even if it was Winnie the Pooh who took over. We're certainly in the poo as far as results go....lol

    lol that is true, but still worse results so far :P i mean yay we got a draw but they looked better than us when they were 1 person down and that is just depressing :P they got a soft red tbh, we got a very lucky draw

    i just dont get how some people here can justify wanting gombau gone when babbel is arguably worse but them being okay with babbel

    Fact.......The truth of the matter is that Gombau is no longer the manager Babbel is.

    Anything else about Gombau,if he stayed and he would of done this or that is just pure speculation nothing more. I understand where you are coming from but it's time to move on mate. 

    I've said all along that the players carry the majority of blame for poor results. Nothing has changed my mind. Even with his supposed change in Mentality we are not progressing as a team. Time will tell.

    that is true, i hope he gets to sign some players in January because we need something, honestly i wasnt happy with gombau i just dont like how babbel gets a free pass and gombau didnt, we have been terrible for such a long time i just want a coach who can make us less terrible and i thought babbel would be it but so far he isnt show much promise

     

    i hope if he can make a few signings and build a team around them then we can be decent, not expecting to make the finals this season but hopefully next season

    More importantly though how great was Babbels outfit tonight?

    that is very true, and it was amazing, popa looked like he was part of the mafia, but babbel looks either like a colombian or mexican drug lord, it was awesome and i hope to see more outfits like that from babbel

     

    the thing i do like about babbel is he isnt afraid to tell our players that they are terrible, feels like they need a good kick sometimes

    I am gonna be positive and say we were 2-1 down and got the draw despite 10 man advantage.

    I think Adelaide played really well. Defensively shutting us down and in that first half really throwing themselves at any final ball we delivered. And then at 10 men Isaias may be a bastard but he kept them ticking with balls to Ilso who is a lot faster than I would have imagined. 

    Rizzo did keep Goodwin quiet for large parts of the game so credit there as well.

    Suman 18 years old may look back at that 2nd goal and could have done better but I was impressed with his confidence in grabbing crosses, and his long distribution to Roly and Reira.

    We had enough chances to bury that game . Poor n slow decision making , wayward passing, fuucked it all up. Adelaide with 10 showed us how to attack. Oh well 7th or 8th place finish this season , bring on promotion/relegation cos this league needs it bad. Every team knows they’ll still be there if they come last.

    ABJ turns up 1 out of 4 games. With 11 v 10 he should of been all over the ball yet not I’m not sure he touched in more than twice in the offensive 3rd. Sure it’s not entirely his fault but his movement is non existent at times. Clear quality but people make countless excuses for the guy purely because of his resume, much like MB.

    The best half hour we had all year/3 years was with Kamau, Riera, ABJ & Fitz as our front line v Brisbane (which we haven’t seen since). Surely with 25+ mins to go & 11 v 10, it was time to pull the trigger with that same combination. We lacked any type of movement... Instead MB sat on his hands, brought on Mahazi & then threw on another offensive player with a minute to go. 

    MB gets a free ride, if it was Gumby the same blokes would be out with pitchforks.

    Gombau had a much better and balanced squad with more depth and experience last season and yet he couldn't get them into the top 6 by playing **** football. Compare the squad from last season to this season and there is a quite a bit of difference.

    Gombau also had a Riera that was banging them in with regularity. That alone would put us 2 or 3 spots up the table.

    His outfits are awesome at least...that shirt and trouser combo was right on point...

    We are not going to finish top 6...i am at the airport flying out anyways...there used to be a time i would hate to miss a home game...cant be farked about NYD game...would rather be away out of town with the lad...

    He may not be winning games but he certainly is winning in the fashion stakes....I'm fully expecting a full on fashion parade the more we slide down the ladder....lol......

    You could also argue he was banging them in because he had more clear cut opportunities due to better play & more space provided by a better structure & game plan which comes back to the coach yeh?

    There is something different about Riera this season. I don't know whether it's the coach wanting him to be more of a "holding" type of striker where he attracts a couple of defenders to set up those around him or he is just out of form. He has a serious lack of pace. Any long balls are going to the wingers because Riera is not quick enough to be first to the ball....just an observation.

    The difference is, Gombau was brought in because of his apparent youth credentials yet he not once went to a NYL training session nor could he name 1 youth player (legend tells he called a youth player by a wrong name once). Whereas its been widely reported that Babbel and the rest of the coaching staff all through the youth setup and academy are working together for a clear vision, especially once the facilities open in a few months.

    The club never wanted Gombau. He was only signed because no one else was available. Also, whenever we lost, he kept saying stuff like "we played well" whereas Babbel is p155ed big time every time we lose. This shows the difference in their approach.

    Gombau had Ikon to cover for him and create chances for the likes of Riera to score.

    Our squad is meh this season. We are struggling big time in the midfield and its an area that must be addressed either in January or the off season.

    Babbel was signed for 3 years with a clear vision for the club. They will give him time and a recruiting off season to really judge him. There's a difference in selecting your long term coach and giving him time to build a squad than taking whichever coach was available and allowing him to destroy the entire setup from u12s up because he had nfi and simply didn't care.

    The entire season we constantly heard rumours of discontent, Riera hating on Gombau, Bridge not buying into it and every other player thinking Gombau was useless. Not once this season has Babbel been labelled "under pressure" and not once have you heard of discontent from the players.

    That is a massive difference and another huge reason why the club isn't getting rid of Babbel.

     

    edit: Also, you could argue only the MV is the one where we completely got outplayed. Every other game has been a contest where small margins and individual errors have been our undoing. Its a far cry to what we're seeing at teams like Brisbane and CCM where they just look lost.

    He had these players playing behind him last season

    Cejudo, Carussca, Ikonomidis, Bridge (when fit), Roly, Kearyn Baccus and lesser extent Herd (when he was not suspended).

    You look at the squad we had last season, you gotta wonder how and why we did not make the top 6?

    Us 'same blokes' have been plenty critical of MB. Read the match threads from sydney and victory among others.

    I would argue that most of MB's **** ups have been lack of understanding of the league. Gumby's were a moronic adherence to his 'philosophy'. We certainly copped more humiliations under gumby. Once MB gets a better handle on the league i think he will be fine. Time will tell obviously.

    I find criticism of ABJ to be nonsense. It's a knee jerk to the poor results. He is creating  chance after chance in a poor side. Imagine if he was surrounded by tomi, hersi and (peak) bridge. Instead he has out of form riera, rubbish kamau and a revolving door at left wing.

    “(I said) they will come out to try and change the result and we were not there,” he said.

    “For me, I don’t understand this. For me, this is what I have to learn.

    “If you stay strong like it was in the first half, then the chance is big to get more chances to get the second goal.”

    The Wanderers equaliser seemed to spark United into action and the hosts looked the more likely to score once parity was restored.

    This was not lost on Babbel, who felt the Reds could have snatched all three points had the game gone longer.

    “Adelaide deserved the point,” he said.

    “Maybe if the game is 10 minutes longer I have the feeling we lose this game.

    “So, now I don’t know what to say; I’m happy to get a point or I’m angry that we don’t get three points.”

    Babbel is completely frustrated and feels perplexed at how his team reacts to certain situations and their inability to finish the game off and to be fair, this has been the issue for the last few seasons

    ABJ is the only player who is worth watching at the moment. Him and Ziegler at the only two players who look good at moment 

    As all over the place as Kamau is at least when he gets the ball you get something might happen
