  • Defensive Suicide Squad Throw Away Derby

The 2nd Sydney Derby of the 2023/24 A-League was a horrendous suicidal performance by a Wanderers team who had no idea how to defend their own penalty box and compounded their defensive woes with abysmal short passing in their own half, copping a 4-1 loss that puts them in danger of exiting the top 6 entirely if Melbourne City or Brisbane Roar can get their act together.

Lawrence Thomas was still out for the Wanderers along with the long-term injury for Marcus Antonsson. Sydney had Patrick Wood out and Luke Brattan suspended. It took all of 3 minutes for the visitors to break the deadlock, the first corner of the game resulted in a free header for Rhyan Grant on the penalty box that he smashed home giving Daniel Margush no chance.

The explosive start got even worse for the Wanderers when a scramble in the box ended with Lachlan Brook sticking his hand up in the air just in time for a Sydney player to kick the ball straight into it. Referee Alex King had no hesitation sending Fabio Gomes to the spot and Gomes sent Margush the wrong way with a stutter step run and a kick to make it 2-0 in 7 minutes.

Margush almost cost his team a 3rd with an awful short pass that became a 50/50 with Hendrix and his marker, the ball falling for a shot by Gomes that Margush redeemed himself with a good save.

The closest the Wanderers got to an attack in the entire first half was Clisby delaying far too long when he had three players breaking through the static defensive line, Borrello got the ball and put it in the net but he looked offside live and the VAR confirmed. A late free kick ended with a Alex Bonetig header that was well off target.

It was a half dominated by Sydney FC, 12 shots to 3, 6 corners to 0, a significant advantage in the one on one duels and of course the two goals, a scoreline that was generous to the Wanderers after their failure in the opening 10 minutes.

Oscar Priestman came on for Alex Badolato and it did nothing to help the situation because 5 minutes into the second half Bonetig gave it away in a dangerous area, a simple midfield pass that allowed Adrian Caceres to nip in and knock it to Jake Hollman and with the defence split as is the current football fashion, it left a gaping hole for Hollman to find Robert Mak who took one touch to set himself up for a shot on the edge of the penalty are that he put past Margush's right arm.

It was 4-0 on the hour after a suicidal mixup at the back, Tom Beadling's backpass was far too heavy, doubly so when Margush had rushed out of the goal to meet it. The keeper botched the clearance, the ball flew backward toward the open net and after Margush failed to dive on the ball or clear it, Fabio Gomes added to his penalty by finishing into the open net for his second of the evening.

A fluke goal with 20 minutes to play ended the Sydney FC clean sheet, substitute Zac Sapsford breaking the defensive line and having his attempted cut-back to the far post deflected over the outstretched hand of Andrew Redmayne. In the end it was little more than a bare consolation, as Sydney FC ran out the remainder of the game without much trouble at all.

What more needs to be said than the result? A four to one drubbing at home in the middle of Marko Rudan's third year at the club. Where the team had trouble stringing two passes together, had trouble defending set pieces and where Sydney FC's four goals were nowhere near as many as their performance deserved. Rudan was given a three year contract extension in mid-January, but done precious little to show he's deserved it since. Another defeat in a Derby, and you would struggle to see what he's improved since the finals loss last season.

The Wanderers next match is against Western United at Parramatta on Friday the 8th of March with kick-off at 7:45PM.

How will it be if a team from another country takes both end of Season trophies and do they represent this competion and Country in Asia :) j

The AFC and Football Australia made a ruling that Wellington cannot compete in AFC competitions like AFC Champions League and AFC Cup

So if Phoenix win this season's Premier's plate - the Champions League spot goes to whoever finishes 2nd (probably Coasties)

I gotta wonder what was Rudan thinking of going 3-5-2 at home in the derby? I am glad that he took responsibility for it but in saying that, this wasn't the game to make massive changes to the tactics and formation.

After 5min Rudan would have already realised by then he made a massive mistake with that setup, the players had no clue what to do with the ball, how to counter their high press and how to stop their fast ball movement.

Even if we have paid the ref, with that performance we would have not won.

My concern from watching Rudan in the press conference was that he looked defeated, like he didn't know what the answer is to avoiding these defeats. For me THATS concerning. He doesn't know what to do.

Yeah I just watched that now, it was a very Carl Robinson-esque press conference, he said the same things after losing Roar then later he got sacked.

Got some big decisions to make this off season. If things get ugly for the rest of the season, I think Lederer has to cop it on the chin and pay the 3 year deal out. We were supposed to be better this season and it hasn't worked out.

Nothing against the guy, I just don’t think he is a particularly good coach tactically. Very rigid style of play and we just don’t have the quality to make it work. So, as we saw on Saturday, we look very one dimensional and fragile when a team puts us under the hammer. Hard to see a way forward for Rudan at this moment.

Having made a big point in press conferences and comments posted by the club's social media about the importance of derbies, Saturday's (lack of) effort should be scrutinised closely

I don't think Lederer and the board will drop him

I overheard a conversation around half time at the game (from the marshals themselves). The supporter marshals were apparently told by Police that if they got involved in whatever was going on, that they would also be arrested.

On this point, I'd like to remind those who don't remember - at our last match at Spotless Stadium, our female Supporter Marshall ended up with a stadium / SOPA ban...

I do have a women’s membership, because as it’s seen as a business I wanted to help bolster their numbers as the club treats the girls like ****.

the absolute bullshit of having the music playing constantly through their game was annoying and disrespectful as ****. i don't care what kind of promotions or entertainment they organise - if it interferes with the only reason anyone is there (the football, duh) its a bad decision.

I totally accept the cops were at fault. But precisely for that reason, why give them what they want - which is to empty the whole bay (the guys that were already there). Walking out hurt nobody except ourselves. It’s not enough to be right, you also gotta be smart.

I have watched this game in this country for forty years. I have seen the crap that has been thrown at us and the efforts to keep us down, including from within the game. You will get no argument from me about how the weak-as-piss FFA allowed itself to be bullied into cracking down on active support years ago. But you don’t prove your enemies have laid a trap for you by walking right into it.

I've been in this situation when I use to stand with the RBB at the old Parra Stadium, after a few lads were kicked out, we remained in the bay and the police were on their intimidating worse when they started to patrol the bays, tried to antagonise the crowd with their prescience and they even were trying to look for someone who at the very least 'mucks' up, it just made the whole thing weird and uncomfortable and you dared not try to do anything. When we scored and we all went mental, thats when the police jumped the crowd and grabbed whoever they can for 'anti-social behaviour'.

Borello is half the player he was last season, but why is fitness an issue?

he had Layouni who was able to draw defenders with his pace and skills and that let Borello have space time and freedom to score, this season he doesn't have that luxury.

He has signed for another 2 years, if an Asian club, or a club from India came calling with cash, then I wouldn't be disappointed to see him go.

I remembered her, I was wondering what happened to her since then, because I remembered she had an issue with one of the female cops behind the active bays at Spotless stadium and that was the last I saw her.

Anyone from the RBB would be crash tackled if they even attempted this.

Nearest I've seen us get to this was the Apia loss at Leichhardt oval active support were giving it the players.

A couple of misplaced passes and Goodison goes like that most weeks

Tbh..the enthusiastic gesturing of the ultra fan looks like the hallmarks of a Hitler speech. You don't need the sound  One look at him tells me he wants them to invade Poland.

Please tell me this was reported. OMG, what a state of affairs where the police are threatening the very people there to mediate.

This club takes alot of energy out of me. Like everyone on here I have been totally loyal since day 1 but I tell you, I am questioning whether it’s worth it. First time really.

Listening to that RBTV podcast made me feel sick to be honest. So much unjustified abuse against supporters and banning notices for under 18 year olds who weren't involved in the scuffles. Capo also banned. Hoping the club can help to get these bans over turned.

Spoke to a bloke today who is a member and knows lots of the key people in the RBB - members at his club. They are top people who just do their bit for football. I'm really angry that the cops simply can't see that lots of young people put in heaps of time and effort to make this work - they weren't out doing crime, being hooligans but being creative. They then abused them and blamed them. They were the criminals, it seems!

The cops could build a lot capital with people from the west, and young people in particular, but wasn't use all to hate and mistrust them. This is what creates real wars, conflicts and divided communities, when power is used to abuse and dominate. Disgusting and unjust.

I'm sick of this narrative going around that the tifo was unauthorised. Channel 9 were saying it, presumably as part of their efforts to protect their NRL investment, and now duds like this Stuart Thomas are uncritically repeating it.

Are they legitimately suggesting that the RBB managed to sneak a stadium length banner past security and a million riot cops, and rolled it out completely unchallenged?

The club needs to come out and publicly confirm that the tifo was approved and everything had been agreed beforehand.

After watching the One Four documentary on Netflix a few months ago, they have the same exact issues we have with the cops and authorities.

And one of the comments I remembered from the Cop was "we will make your life miserable until you stop doing what you’re doing". So their objective is to make sure that Organised Active Support no longer exists

It's the Raptor Squad mentality. Ongoing harassment even with people who have committed no crime or been alleged to have committed a crime, simply for being painted by the cops as a problem.

Meanwhile the likes of Barilaro and the organised crime figures attacking Friendlyjordies are getting away scot free.

No. A-League Memes retweeted the clip of them saying it to call it out.

You and I know it’s garbage, but all they need to do is add that suggestion and the average person immediately assumes the RBB is in the wrong.

Then you get articles like the one linked above where the “freelance journalist” casually throws in the line “the treatment of a Wanderer fan due to what has been claimed to be an unauthorised banner”.
