  • Controversial Derby Draw

A 10 minute flurry of activity in the 2nd half has seen the Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC take a point each out of their Olympic Stadium Sydney Derby tonight, the match finishing 1-1.

It took until the 63rd minute to open the scoring through a controversial penalty. Milos Ninkovic had offloaded the ball to a team-mate and continue his run into the penalty area, he barged straight into James Troisi who could do nothing except get smashed by the attacker. Unsurprisingly, Sydney FC benefited from a poor officiating decision, as Alex King decided that Troisi not managing to teleport out of the way of the onrushing Ninkovic deserved a penalty and the VAR decided to compound the ineptitude by not over-turning it. Kosta Barbarouses sent Daniel Margush the wrong way from the spot to make it 1-0.

The injustice only fired up the Wanderers and they capitalised on a classic Andrew Redmayne mistake to level the scores in the 69th. Graham Dorrans lofted a long range through ball into the penalty area for the inch-perfect run of Tate Russell, the Sydney FC keeper made a mess of his attempt to grab the ball and he spilled it into the path of Troisi who couldn't miss the 8 yard open goal tap-in. Neither side would be particularly happy with the draw but it does keep them for now in the top 4 each on four points.

The Wanderers next game is against the Central Coast Mariners on Tuesday January 19 in Gosford with kick-off at 7:05PM.

Has anyone mentioned that in the cover photo for this match report that both Ben Warland and Trent Buhagiar are committing a handball offence from a corner/cross?

I've seen that exact photo a lot bigger and its blatantly obvious.

Those who disagree with the pen, would you have the same opinion if it was awarded to us?

Definitely. It's the first question I ask myself after my initial reaction.

Granted I wouldn't bother saying anything about it. If asked though, my opinion would be the same.

Tom Aquilina was my man of the match he controlled mullet head most of the game.

Have to be devil's advocate here sorry. Easties targeted his side most of the first half. Between him AND Tass they certainly struggled to keep our left side contained. As the game wore on however they did improve and Grant was ineffective especially in the 2nd half, mostly down to Aquilina bombing forward and Grant actually having to do some defending.

Fantastic experience for both played and can only get better from here. I don't know if Aquilina will back up for the Mariners and Expect to see Ziegler and Georgevski back in for the game depending on how everyone held up.

Tas was the issue , with poor positional play allowing easy 1 2s and Aquilina was under pressure for those reasons but he keep the mullet under control to the point where the mullet started to get frustrated.

How old is Aquilina 20 , if cannot back up tomorrow night for another strong shift then there is a problem he should be able to run all day Same for all the young blokes.

Matter of fact I would have thought most if not all the first team should be able to back up Dorrans Cox Muller all came from leagues with midweek games every week, 3 sleeps and 2 days recovery time.

These blokes have a 2 week rest after tomorrow night.

The players may not be the issue, can the training staff have them ready?

763 days since we last lost to the Smurfs.

Anyone know how to find one of those "x days since Sydney fc won a derby" pages.

For a good cause - need to give it to a bunch of smurfs haha

Don't know of a website, but it's been 782 days. They last won on 15 December 2018.
