  • Controversial Derby Draw

    mack

A 10 minute flurry of activity in the 2nd half has seen the Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC take a point each out of their Olympic Stadium Sydney Derby tonight, the match finishing 1-1.

It took until the 63rd minute to open the scoring through a controversial penalty. Milos Ninkovic had offloaded the ball to a team-mate and continue his run into the penalty area, he barged straight into James Troisi who could do nothing except get smashed by the attacker. Unsurprisingly, Sydney FC benefited from a poor officiating decision, as Alex King decided that Troisi not managing to teleport out of the way of the onrushing Ninkovic deserved a penalty and the VAR decided to compound the ineptitude by not over-turning it. Kosta Barbarouses sent Daniel Margush the wrong way from the spot to make it 1-0.

The injustice only fired up the Wanderers and they capitalised on a classic Andrew Redmayne mistake to level the scores in the 69th. Graham Dorrans lofted a long range through ball into the penalty area for the inch-perfect run of Tate Russell, the Sydney FC keeper made a mess of his attempt to grab the ball and he spilled it into the path of Troisi who couldn't miss the 8 yard open goal tap-in. Neither side would be particularly happy with the draw but it does keep them for now in the top 4 each on four points.

The Wanderers next game is against the Central Coast Mariners on Tuesday January 19 in Gosford with kick-off at 7:05PM.

I told you all Alex King was an idiot.

Penalty for being smashed into by an opponent without the ball ffs.

You really have to give the ref bashing a break. I want to try and be kind, but your match reports are embarrassing tbh.

We looked much better after they scored and we had to go at them, when we get the confidence to do that from kick off we will be a team in the top four.  It was scrappy but it was a Derby, our two defenders held on with yellows all game, two kids playing wing backs will make it hard for DG to get near the team, Ziggy well I wasn't sure about him but he is a real goer, same as Dorrens.  Hope Coxy goes home to his missus and good to see Redmayne doing Redmayne things.  Yep there is hope.

What does that mean? Replacement or mutual term?

It would have to be a mutual termination because we can only sign a replacement if Cox was injured.

    My 5 Cents:

    * Watching on TV felt like I was back in 1984 watching NSL - one camera angle, half the ground in shadows, and bugger all noise from the stands

    *  Looks like Wanderers have remembered how to play football again

    * Some of those runs from Ibini looked as if Usain Bolt had of had ball control

not sure, his missus is ready to pop, there was talk he was going home which would be 4 weeks at least with quarantine, but first kid, may not return.  I like his passion but I don't think he has it tbh

Can't be too harsh on Muller for the missed chip, its harder than it looks on the run. Disappointing all the same.

Russell has been great but needs to focus more on easy give aways of possession. At one point in the second 45 I counted 4 or 5 possessions out of 7 where he gave the ball away under little pressure. Hope he works on that to take his game to the next level.

Muller also continues to worry me, he seems to do the same (give the ball away under little pressure) far too often, for such a class player, frustrating as hell.

Only a short turnaround to the next game. Kamau and Georgievski to start....?

I don't think he will play Kamau in defence.  How far away is Wilmering (he was a Wanderers ballboy once you know :xnod: hahaha)

add Troisi to that list I think he is the biggest culprit

In the pre match pretty sure I heard them say he is going and will miss 3-4 games and he is coming back to Oz with his family

As soon as Troisi eyed off Ninko and squared him up it was always going to be a penalty. If he had a brain he would’ve turned to run while using his body at the same time. Dumb defending tbh.

    Margush, so far so good.

Also I found myself yelling abuse at Speed and Harper more than the Smurf players.........

    I miss Simon Hill.

speed and harper are painful, agreed our goalkeeper did very well

The commentary is truly awful and incredibly bias. The whole broadcast is a shadow of what it once was. Minimal cameras, terrible commentary. Just budget broadcasting all round.

Not the result I hoped for but I’ll take that, once the pen went in we were all over them. They have years together, that is as good as they will get, we will improve

it’s all going to be eetswa

so what was the Fox Verdict on the pen from the in stadium replay it didn’t look like a pen at all

I thought Ibini did ok when he came on too

So again with regard to the penalty decision....I was at the game and saw the replays a couple of times on the big screen and was astonished no VAR review was called for. The ball was well gone when they collided and I can’t see where Troisi is supposed to go. At the very least it should have been reviewed. Was it KGJ again on VAR? Poor again after last week’s red card shocker

Fox take the party line which is it favoured Sydney FC , so it was a penalty. Except for Bozza (no penalty).

Im just glad after the initial start we slowly worked out way into it, the last 25 mins was essentially all us.
    Another encouraging performance

once again  Tass & Aq did well, but tougher defensively on them but looked okay

i thought dorrans look a bit better today

overall another good forward step, really happy to have another game so soon on Tuesday - keen to head up the coast!

we better pick up some points in the next few weeks cos after that City v WU game the Melbourne conference looks a lot stronger than ours.
