The Western Sydney Wanderers finally broke their season long home victory drought, as they comprehensively outplayed the Newcastle Jets 2-0 at Campbelltown Stadium.

The match was a clash of two outfits in a similar place on the A-League ladder, but the conclusion was one of total dominance for the Wanderers.

Despite the return from suspension of Brendon Santalab, coach Tony Popovic elected to continue with Lachlan Scott up front, and his choice paid dividends right before half-time. Kearyn Baccus has finally started to look like challenging for a first team position and he punctuated his good performance with a killer ball through the middle of the Jets defence. Having found Scott, the young striker turned on the ball before lashing a clinical strike into the top right corner and giving Jack Duncan no chance to make a save.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first. Newcastle huffed & puffed but never truly looked like bothering the scorers. The Wanderers doubled their advantage in the 68th minute. Mitch Nichols blasted a shot at Duncan from the byline, it rebounded to Dimas Delgado who found an unmarked Jaushua Sotirio. He swept his foot to the ball, with it taking a deflection from Mateo Poljak that wrong footed the Newcastle keeper for the 2-0 scoreline.

Newcastle tried their best but failed to take control for any meaningful amount of time, and the game was in far more danger of finishing 3-0 than the Jets pulling a goal back. Neither side could add to the scoreline however, with the Wanderers picking up their first home win of the season just in time to visit the Brisbane Roar next week.

Great to see Scott bag a goal, he finally got decent service and he made it count.

Anyone else starting to really get frustrated with Nichols? The dude is yelling at everyone, he continues to take players positions, turn over possession and is offering no value to the forward play. I think he's becoming toxic for the side.

Scott still reminds me of Joel Griffiths. Talked up but produces little (I’m happy to be proved wrong). He looked tired after 1 minute.

    Nichols routine this year:

    1: Receive ball

    2: Pass it backwards

    3: Wave arms

4: Yell at the person he passed it back to

Correct Griffiths was dynamite early on, he's brother Adam was great too.

Mitch is just over not winning once we string a few wins he won't be grumpy anymore it was the same in glory they went on **** run he was ****

In a winning side he is generally one of the best

Scott yes don't think his fitness is where it should be but then again I challenge anyone to be the single guy up front on a hot day to Ctown

But I think we have said it before

I'm surprised Antonis didn't get a run yesterday. How Hamill comes off the bench to replace Clisby as a preference over Antonis over Dimas/Baccus is beyond me. We get nothing out of having Hamill playing the last 5 minutes - even Clisby was shocked to see his number come up. I was impressed with the back line over the weekend - I think Neville had a hard time with Nabbout but I truly don't understand Antonis not getting much needed game time in his legs. Other than that pretty solid performance - I felt Dimas needs a wake up call - he was dreadful at points yesterday, Mitch Nichols didn't really add much, Nico holds the ball for a step too long early in the first half but looked to be fixed it in the second. Sotirio had a blinder.

Lachlan Scott had the best goal of the season for mine. That's where he needs to be and that's where our players need to pass to.

Yeah I thought it was weird too, and noticed Clisby seemed surprised. Only thing I can think of is that Popa wants Hamill to feel comfortable at LB before ACL.

Me too - but he's played there before and to only bring him on for 5 minutes?!

Scott played NYL last year, went straight into NPL2 and now the first team. He's been playing for about 12 months with a pretty small break. Might be the reason people are saying he's looking a bit slow or gassed late on in games.

Football is a game of opinions but when I watch Nichols ( at the ground ) I see a player that runs his guts out for the full 90 , times the press impeccably , great vision knows where he wants to pass before he gets it , always running into spaces attracting defenders but does get a little frustrated when his teammates are rubbish .

Would be first player I sign .Period .

Cannot disagree with his work rate, he has a big engine but with that he pushes others out of their position and creates unnecessary running for himself. I can't count how many times he stopped his runs yesterday when Nico wanted to play the one-two on the wings, he's not in the position to be frustrated with his teammates; they should be frustrated with him.

My only guess with the Clisby sub was Popa wanted to make sure he didn't get his 5th yellow and get suspended for Brisbane away.

I agree that it would have been good to see Antonis get a run and adding to the Nichols discussion, I reckon he needs a break every now and then. He works bloody hard and always looks knackered at full time. Yesterday would have been a good chance to give Mitch a breather and try Antonis there.

As for the game, i thought we did ok creating chances but it was being the same old story with those missed chances.

Jets last ditch defense as annoying but it was necessary for them.

The most annoying thing about this game was the ref, obvious fouls are being committed bynthe jets and he allows playon, we do the a soft challenge and ref gives them the free kick. It just seems he watched the City v Spurs game and wants to ref the game like that.

I actually think the ref went ok yesterday. Why? Because he hasn't become the major talking point after the game.

Agree though, that there were a few frees that weren't given to us, but after watching the game again when I got home, Newcastle also got the rough end of the whistle several times.

He just seemed reluctant to award some free kicks for some blatant fouls.

Loved the game yesterday, and loved my first time at Campbelltown stadium, even if it took me 45 minutes to drive there! However, I can't see it being feasible for a full-time home ground. It is good to play our midweek ACL games there as the crowd numbers will be lower and tickets are sold separately to memberships, but who is going to tell up to 6000 members that they now miss out (potentially up to 8000 to allow for away tickets and outside purchases)?

Yes, but there's only 10000 seats.

How many season ticket members will accept a membership to a grassy hill?

Happy with the win and the improvement, but we were playing against Newcastle with a number of missing players. The big test IMO will be against the Roar. This game will show us where we stand and a good result can fill us with confidence for the next few games.

I wouldn't say toxic, but I have been surprised that everyone's been saying that he is one of the few players they'd definitely re-sign. He's been struggling this year with confidence and decision-making and he has been starting to show his frustration by blaming others when he doesn't get the ball where he wants it.

I think Mitch has always needed quality players moving around him to help create space,he doesn't create from nothing. I don't think he's gelled with Nico like he did with Bridge etc.

But I also think that he, like the team, is starting to look better.

To be fair, Clisby in the derby deserved the frustration that came his way from Mitch, and to a lesser extent yesterday. Don't get me wrong, I like Clisby, but he has been a little off his game for a few weeks now also.

I sat on the Family Hill yesterday and watched the subs warming up. Antonis looked desperate to be part of the action given all his anxious glances towards the bench in the second half !!

He should be captain as Dimas doesn't say nothing and hogs all the short corners and set piece kicks while the left footed wizard Nico watches.

No doubt he is out of form attacking wise but he busts a but for us.

I would if the big games were at ANZ. Essentially it's a very good League Ground but in terms of the crowd participation/intimidation factor its far better than Spotless. Pitch quality could be better though.

Mitch to me just looked tired yesterday, whether it be heavy legs, frustration or both. Dude needs a refresher, either a light week at training or start him on the bench for Antonis in Brisbane just to get some energy back.

It's not falling his way like it did last year but the effort hasn't waned.

The only thing I can think is that Popa wants to use him more during our ACL campaign?

He did stop his runs twice with nico but let's face it Nico , Sotirio and Jumpei all hold on to it way too much thus making it very hard for players to time runs , the combination with bridge was much better because bridgey understands how to play football .

    • Nicholls looks like he is in need of a rest, at least a sub for a game.

Jumpei continued his slide from early season promise.

We have a goalie who exudes confidence

Talking about members and Campeltown not being big enough. We have far too many members who just don't show up, period.

Popa probably doesn't trust Antonis' fitness yet. To be Popa-fit you are looking at April ;)

Clisby was subbed off to protect his yellow card record.

    Yep.

Baccus was receiving the ball and looking to pass or dribble forwards. Made a big difference.

Also I am developing something of a man crush on cornflakes (no homo). If popa puts borda back in after his suspension I may morph into a full foaming at the mouth popa out facebook ranting mentalist.

We need to appeal Borda's suspension. Ask whether 3 games was a bit lenient.

Missed it being away on hols but followed on ABC radio. Terrible commentary. The text is better.

Hawkesbury radio, trust me. They **** on 90% of the callers out there

Normally I like the Hawkesbury crew, but I had to switch over to Grandstand before I even got to half time this game. Too much banter and not enough describing the football. ABC might be a bit dull, but at least I didn't have to listen to minutes of who looks like who on Scrubs without any description of the game at hand.

Popa brought it up in the post game presser. He said (paraphrasing) he was concerned with all the tall timber that Newcastle brought on & he wanted more height to defend the inevitable crosses that Newcastle would whip in as they became more desperate.

I think he'd been planning on giving Antonis minutes in the game, especially given the heat
