Western Sydney travelled to the Apple Isle to take on Western United, Lachlan Brook scoring in the first half before his side held on with 10 men after an Aiden Simmons red card.
The key moment of the first half came in the 35th minute, Nicolas Milanovic dropped the shoulder on Josh Risdon and torn past the fullback and evaded the attempt to bring him down with the arms. Milanovic fired across the face of goal, it found Antonsson at the back post and he smartly killed the ball with a first touch for a Brook shot that fairly tore into the back of the net to open the scoring.
The 65th minute saw the game turned on it's head by an awful foul by Simmons. With the ball rolling in the midfield Simmons closed hard and fast with Kane Vidmar in his sights. With the collision imminent Simmons slipped and fell into into what became an atrocious tackle, hitting Vidmar in the knee with his studs and then rolling over his knee. There was no hesitation with the red card and Simmons was off.
Despite the man advantage WU made little headway against a stoic defence headlined by a raft of high quality reaction saves from Daniel Margush. The Wanderers held on for the half-hour a man down for a clean sheet and three points to keep them in touch with Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix at the top of the table.
The Wanderers next match is against Macarthur FC on Sunday the 4th of February at Campbelltown Stadium with kick-off at 5pm.
