Victory Is Life In Red & Black's Special Comeback
Kotallo and 23 others reacted to THEWANDERERSPOST for a topic
Wow that was such a special night. For me, this was our biggest game since the elimination final 2 years ago. We have lost every single game that feels big in the last however many years, every time we think we can get a bit of momentum. But tonight was different, they played like they had belief, even when 2-0 down, they thought they could turn this around. Thomas, Bonetig and Panta are really forming a good bond, it’s going to be hard for Laws to even make it in the starting XI at the moment. For weeks now, despite an upturn in form, I have wanted Clisby to be dropped for Gersbach, and tonight showed why. His crossing is phenomenal and seems more assured defensively. I thought Brillante and Priestman had never worked well with each other until the Derby draw this season, and they’ve really turned it up, their work rate is tireless and top notch. Milanovic played like a player possessed tonight. I’ve been highly critical of his selfishness and work rate at times, but he really turned up for this game and demanded his starting spot back. I think Kraev is our most under appreciated player by miles. The guy works his socks off every game in defence, and has scored some massive goals for us this season. Tonight was another beauty. Borrello is another I’ve been highly critical of, but his goal tonight was hugely important, even though it was not his greatest performance. Antonsson definitely had his best game for the club tonight, he was very good. Held up the ball so well for Milanovic’s goal, and scored a really nice goal himself. With the small time he got, I thought Mata was quality and helped set up the 3rd goal well, he still has an important role in this squad I think. Its nights like tonight which I hope bring people back and keep them in the stadium for future games. Atmosphere tonight was probably the best outside of a derby since the new stadium was opened, that tifo was probably one of my favourites of the last few years. Overall a really good night and I hope we can continue this run. Fortunate enough to be able to go to New Zealand for both the Nix and Auckland games, really looking forward to both games. Let’s finish this season strong, keep getting the points on the board, and who knows what could happen. We’re only a point away from being in an Asian qualification spot, and we could be on for a run in the finals, should we make it… it’s getting to crunch time now.24 points -
I’m taking more positives than negatives out of the game. Our attacking play is actually pretty good. We open teams up easily and to be frank we should have won that but our finishing was terrible late in (fatigue) and everyone seemed to desperate to score so we had some calamitous moments. But we were still getting in scoring positions. Our discipline needs improving and game smarts reinforced. Defence is what needs work and fair dinkum Clisby has to go. No agility, slow, ponderous almost. But geez the team played with some ticker.24 points

I don’t give a **** about WSW right now, I’m making this comment as a general football/sport fan… That bullshit from Brisbane was ******* embarrassing and shameful. That sort of carry on brings the game into disrepute more than any off field discretion ever could. The fact it was allowed to keep playing out with zero punishment or even warning made it worse. Imagine resorting to that when you’re drawing a meaningless, early season game and sitting tied last. You’d think they were about to lift the World Cup ffs. Football’s lack of balls when it comes to stamping out theatrics and thinly veiled cheating is a complete piss take. I couldn’t care less about the game, that left such a sour taste in my mouth23 points

rather we bring him off the bench in the first few games - really watch his workload - all about quality not quantity. its a great signing for the league - hoping we have a good season that convinces him to stay here longer. an RBB tifo to send him off ala Ono style in 3 seasons time would be fantastic - i just really hope he has a positive impact for WSW, because that will help the league. the club is holding its end up trying to get people back to games - the ball is in our court to answer the call20 points

Hasnt played a full game of football in two years, a bare 10 minutes for Kobe a year ago, and not at all since then. I hope his body memories of match fitness will return quickly. Most important addition to the squad will be Mata's phisio in an attempt to keep him out of sick bay. I hope his knees and ankles will get used to the hard pitches, and he enjoys playing in the afternoon heat. But kudos to smurfs for signing costa and wsw's new board for making this happen. This is clearly an attempt to revitalize (or even rescue) the league.20 points

Alen Stajcic Appointed Wanderers Head Coach
GunnerWanderer and 19 others reacted to Hughesy for a topic
For all their popularity and hype, the Matilda’s haven’t looked like winning a major trophy since Staj was the boss imo. He turned CCM around, which given the intricacies of the club, is in theory a far harder task than turning WSW around. Perth have been such a basket case post covid that I’m ignoring his time there. Lots of talk about him being an uninspired signing but who’s to say we had any other options? Several managers in several years barely makes WSW a desirable destination for players and managers. Theres zero evidence to suggest PK or Monty had any interest in the job. In fact, the only other rumour was a random foreigner who hasn’t won anything in 30+ years of management lmao. To end up with Staj, all things considered, I think we’ve done pretty well.20 points -
Eh, im a little sad about this one. I know most on this forum wanted him gone, but his first 8 or so games for us were bloody brilliant. He's never been great defensively but he was dynamic in attack. I recall he got benched to give Tommy Aquilina some time, and after that he never really looked the same. His performances have taken a huge dive off a cliff since his ACL injury. In my head he's still 19, completely whiffed on the fact he's 24. He should be showing much more at that age. We have zero need for Tate with Simmo and Cleur in the picture. Wish him all the best20 points

A few small tidbits to take from that game. - Holmes looks confident, leave him there until LT is back. He's not smashing the ball into his own net so thats a start - I dont mind Panta at LB but his lack of left foot hurt his a few times to tonight. Better teams wont allow him to play inside - Mila is too feckn good for this league. We need multiple players hitting their stride very soon because we may get an offer we cant refuse come Jan 1 A win is nice but we absolutely have to be beating teams like Newcastle, Perth and Brisbane. We need nearly 40 points for finals.16 points

Took the Phillipines womens national team to a World Cup which is an outstanding achievement. Finished ahead of the Matildas in the Asian Cup. Built the structures to help Mariners become the club that it is today, taking them from last to 3rd. All his achievements with the Matildas. He wouldn't have been my first choice, but he has a decent track record of using youth and rebuilding clubs. Perth he was never properly backed, no owner, poor squad and budget.16 points -

I'm not anti Staj just yet because I think coaches should be given time to implement their system and for players to adjust to it, but he's making it hard to believe he's the right man for the job. His team selections for the last few home matches frustrate the hell out of me. I've always believed that you try to win your home games and get a point away. Make your home a fortress and before visiting teams step on the pitch, it's like you are 1-0 up without kicking a ball. You put the fear of god in your opponents, and get fans to turn up. The last few games I swear he hasnt given us a chance due to his team selections. Not once, but twice. It seems Staj is set in his ways and won't learn or change. Maybe the fitness coaches have too much influence over team selection with their stats on who is fit, recovery levels and the like? It's hard enough to get fans through the door but with these teams selections, even less will come to games. Staj is set on his 4-4-2. Any coach worth their salt will play a system that get's the best out of their players and not just the only formation they understand. His lack of inflexibility with regard to formations is astounding and really shows a lack of tactical awareness. How we can go half a season and not even give Mata a fair crack at playing as a 10, with 2 central midfielders behind him is remarkable. It's as clear as day we are getting overrun in midfield in almost every game. Our 2 CM's against the opponents 3 CM's. Even with the vastly improving Scicluna we struggled. If Mata is there, regardless of his lack of pace, he'll worry opponents with his creativity. We have a World Cup winner in our squad who has won things throughout his career and he's warming our bench. If it doesnt work, fine, go back to your old ways but surely its worth a go. I'm sure every coach at a decent level has some sort of reflection on how they can improve personally on their previous season. Having conceded 69 goals at Perth last season I would hope that his focus this season would be making us solid at the back. The reality is we are a shambles. How Staj could think our defenders are good enough as a unit at this level is beyond me. We haven't replaced Mrcela, let alone Marcelo. I'm hopeful that this transfer window can see us bring in a centre back or two and a CDM and we can be a force in this league. I'm still not convinced that any team in this league is dominant, so I live in hope. Mind you. we've all been living in hope for about 10 years. Gersbach is a great pickup, so maybe.... just maybe.15 points -

We are the joke of the A-League. Absolute joke. Season over. Coach can't couch. Jeong can't defend. Those living in hope that Juan Mata is our saviour, are in denial. I applaud any fan for staying positive. Oh, if Staj gets the arse, I'd brink in David Zdrilic. Ticks all right boxes. His team is leaking goals and are at the bottom of the ladder. Perfect candidate.15 points -
Penny for the thoughts of NTS, La Roc and co watching our imitation of a defence tonight. Sapsford and Scicluna did more than enough to earn a start next game. And the keeper simply has to go. Terrible.15 points

It warmed my heart seeing Covic on RBTV. Those boys are doing a great job every week, and they should be commended for bringing a genuine legend of our club onto the show. Those first three seasons seem like a lifetime ago, but listening to Ante re-live those moments, reminds us that we are a part of a unique club, dear to so many fans and ex-players alike. I'm a diehard Penrith Panthers fan, since 1985 when Greg Alexander won the Dally M medal. I've been lucky enough to see the Panthers win 6 Grand Finals. 4 in a row, is out of this world. If the Wanderers get it right as a club, both on and off the field, I truly believe that it will lift the profile of the sport in this country, again. Bigger than any 4-peat from a rival code. Let's hope that the return of the players from the ACL winning champion team at Parramatta on Saturday, is that much needed spark the club desperately needs, to rebuild it to the level that will makes us all proud.15 points

its round 1 and we have a new manager - plenty of time for improvement during the season. i think we need to get everyone 100% fit and performing at their best in training so Staj & co can pick and stick with a starting 11. we've been **** for years - lets at least give Staj a chance to put his mark on the squad. its pretty disheartening the amount of negativity already created (our various platforms) after round 1. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and negativity certainly can be justified, but to be immediately on the back of the team and saying the season is over after round 1... cmon Wanderers fan - that's not us and thats not our club - this club was built on resilience and we pride ourselves of not giving up. Ante Covic on RBTV last night was very insightful as to why we don't have a continuous connection with that ACL team. Santalab, Covic, Cole, Bridge should be involved in the club. Personal grudges because of a pay dispute on prize money these boys deserved is petty from the previous regime. The fact that Covic has never come to Wanderers game with his kids because the club shut him out is disgraceful and no wander the club is a basket case. Glad to her Scott Hudson genuinely is trying to repair that relationship. But what a joke. Mariners and the Jets do a better job of taking care of their own than we do.14 points -

Marko Rudan Discussion
WESTSYDFAN and 13 others reacted to WSWTragicAgain for a topic
At the beginning of his tenure, I wasn't as pessimistic as many here, and early signs seemed to indicate some passion for the club, which appeared to help galvanise some effort from the team. But then I saw how hard he was pushing the "fibros vs silvertails" type of gee up that hasn't really worked since Roy Masters in the NRL, and it was pretty obvious that he was very one dimensional, and it became a meaningless mantra of us v them (whoever "they" are). As the last two seasons have shown, he lacks creativity both in tactics and the ability to inspire, and has a sheer arrogance and unwillingness to adjust that fails to acknowledge either the strengths or limitations of the squad he has at hand. Surely he has to go, but who is going to replace him? Each year as we select the wrong coaches and then drag on with them way beyond their use-by we show an environment that increases toxicity and disharmony - who of any quality would want to take the reins? We need a squad not of superstars, but of players of some quality and heaps of hunger to do their best, and coaches like Rudan who appears to be a de-motivator, won't attract the cattle we need. That said, I'll continue to scour the site daily for any positive news and get my hopes up again - as someone here said before, "It's the hope that kills you".14 points -
This post from @apvz got lost just before I moved to the new thread: --------- Alright season is officially over so we can start planning for next season. Here's what I would do: Firstly, Rudan can GO Players Loaned Out Jarrod Carluccio (Perth, Contract expires this season) - Go Oliver Bozanic (Perth, contract expires this season) - Go Expiring End of Season 2023/2024 Anthony Pantazopolous (Youth) - Go Aydan Hammond (Youth) - Keep (Has good potential) Daniel Margush - Go (He wanted to go this season, can go now.) Doni Grdic - Go (what was the point of this guy?) Dylan Scicluna - Stay (has potential) George Antonis (Youth) - Go (if i remember correctly he's already gone?) Jack Gibson - Stay (Deserves a chance as backup and should be fit by the start of next season) Jorrit Hendrix (Foreign) - Stay (the team was much better with him in it, great experience in midfield and will still only be 29 when next season starts) Marcelo (Foreign) - Stay (I can see he is beginning to lose his touch but is still class. Just needs a solid partner) Milos Ninkovic - Go (retiring) Nathaneal Blair (Youth) - Stay (I like him, big body and can throw himself around off the bench as he did against Victory) Ruon Tongyik - Go (no explanation required) Sonny Kittel (Foreign, Loan) - Go (so disappointing considering our last foreign loan signing was our beloved Layouni. Did not live up to the hype at all) Valentino Yuel - Stay (Was definitely lively when he played. Obviously something has happened with Rudan. A good squaddie to have) Expiring End of Season 2024/2025 (assuming i could just get rid of people at will) Dylan Pierias - Stay (he can stay as long as he's a squaddie and not starting) Gabriel Cleur - Stay (good versatility, pretty much played all across the backline and midfield this season) Jack Clisby - Go (there has to be better options out there) Josh Brillante - Go (He's okay at best and is washed. With the salary he is probably on, he can go). Lawrence Thomas - Stay (Still one of the best keepers in the league) Lachlan Brook - Stay (outperformed any early expectations we had for him. Missed him big time when he was gone) Marcus Antonsson (Foreign) - Go (There has to be a way to tear up this guys contract. He was a completely different player in preseason. Hard to pinpoint where is all went wrong.) Marcus Younis (Youth) - Stay (he is a gun) Nicolas Milanovic - Stay - (Same as Brook, outperformed our expectations of him, probably player of the season) Oscar Priestman (Youth) - Stay - (Hopefully another preseason under his belt and he can get better) Tate Russell - Go - (Meh, was average when he played and happy to have Simmons and Scicluna as our two RB's Taiga Harper (Youth) - Stay (i guess?) Tom Beadling - Go (To me, just isn't good enough and too injury prone) Zac Sapsford - Stay (will be 22 at the start of next season, so he really has to start making an impact) Expiring End of Season 2025/26 (Again, assuming i could just get rid of players at will) Aidan Simmons (Youth) - Stay (our best RB. Has potential to go overseas) Alex Badolato - Stay (probably another one that has fallen out with Rudan. I would keep him around) Alex Bonetig (Youth) - Stay (as a squaddie) Expiring End of Season 2026/27 Brandon Borrello - Stay (if Marcelo goes, he's our captain) POSITIONS TO STRENGTHEN Centre back (Never replaced Mrcela and we felt it) Attacking mid (Firstly change the formation to something that actually uses an attacking mid, then bring me some spicy latino no. 10) Defensive mid (someone to go with Hendrix) Left back (if they can attack and defend that would be cool) Striker (8th time's the charm for a foreign striker right?)14 points

Police, Security & Supporter Discussion Part 2
Sime11 and 13 others reacted to BohemianDublin for a topic
The issue, Policing at the Derby game, has been positioned as 'Policing the Active RBB section'. It isn't this. It's a much bigger issue ... ongoing bad policing, wasting tax-payer (&spectator) at a sporting venue. Bad policing is bad policing. I've been going to games since the 70s. Seen a lot of high-tension games in eras where police were necessary. High presence, antagonistic policing is not necessary at WSW games. And thankfully it never has been. At the last Derby, we had a magical festival of culture and football ruined, by police. It was a wonderful party, snapped away in a moment. Police should make us all feel safer. We just need to call the events of the last Derby for what they are. Totally unacceptable policing.14 points -

Its exceptionally easy to dislike Uskok, Germaine, Lewis and Baccus. All 4 have their hands all over opposition players, dragging them around by shirts if theres even a slight confrontation (example Mila giving some lip). Add to that a protected player like Davilla and its always likely to kick off. It was the same with SFC back when they had ninko playing. They're just a particularly unlikeable squad.13 points
