MathyouWSW Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago (edited) A Scoreless Sydney Derby see Wanderers sharing points with Sydney FC. The Wanderers NPL squad failed to score against a 10-man Sydney FC squad at Wanderers Football Park today. One change was made for the Wanderers with Aidan Simmons returning to the squad, Kaan Nizam moved to the bench and Noah Peacock removed from the squad. Tensions were already high going into this match and referee Brodie Merchant wasn’t going to hold back on throwing cards to players from each squad. The players from each squad would get into a scuffle in the 10th minute as Saxon Hillyer and Mathias MacAllister for pushing and shoving each other. Sydney FC were the first of the two squad to have almost scored as they received a corner kick, the ball curled in the wind, which made it challenging for Tristan Vidackovic. However, he managed to secure it. Some Sydney FC players claimed it crossed the goal line, but referee Brodie Merchant said that play will continue. In the 22nd minute, Sydney FC moved past the Wanderers' defense. Alen Herbas passed to Matias MacAllister, who was left with only Tristan Vidackovic to beat. MacAllister attempted to score, but Vidackovic timed his action well and blocked the shot. As the ball bounced into the air, MacAllister tried to reach it, but Lachlan Tilt cleared it away, preventing a goal. Nicholas Badolato got a nice pass to Richard Nkomo which allowed him to try his chances to score against his former club in the 32nd minute. Nkomo would dribble pass Sydney defence and tried an attempt at goal that would see Gus Hoesfloot diving to make the save and keep the score goalless. Awan Lwal has set up Aidan Simmons with a chance in the 44th minute as Aidan Simmons received in the ball in the middle if the field just outside the penalty box area, Simmons attempt would get pass Sydney’s defence and making Gus Hoesfloot making a low dive safe as Sydney would eventually clear the ball. Afterwards, Sydney FC went down to 10 men when Lachlan Middleton received a straight red card for a high boot on Saxon Hillyer. The Wanderers made another effort to score before minutes into the first half injury time. As the ball appeared to be heading out for a goal kick, Julian Cop managed to keep it in play and passed it to Awan Lual, who subsequently returned it to him. The Sydney defense seemed disorganized and under pressure. Cop attempted a shot that deflected off a Sydney FC player and reached Alaat Abdul-Rahman. Abdul-Rahman tried at goal, which passed Gus Hoesfloot but was cleared by Corey Cronin. The Wanderers had the first scoring opportunity in the second half when Awan Lual delivered a well-timed pass to Alaat Abdul-Rahman, enabling him to break through Sydney FC's defense. However, Abdul-Rahman's attempt at goal was off-target and went wide. In the 51st minute, Saxon Hillyer passed the ball to Richard Nkomo, who aimed for a solo run to score against his former club. Nkomo managed to approach the goalpost, but his attempt was thwarted by a low diving save from Gus Hoesfloot. Julian Cop then made a follow-up attempt, which resulted in the ball going out for a corner kick. In the 59th minute, Wanderers had another scoring opportunity. Some Sydney FC players thought Luka Knezevic was offside, but he wasn't. Knezevic crossed into the penalty box area, where Richard Nkomo connected with the ball. Nkomo's shot passed the Sydney FC defense but was easily stopped by Gus Hoesfloot. In the 64th minute, Ricky Fransen nearly allowed Sydney FC an opportunity to score. The ball was bouncing near Wanderers' half of the field. Fransen did not initially notice Zac Fowler was close by and ready to contest for the ball. Fowler almost gained control, but Fransen eventually realized Fowler's presence as they competed for possession. Fransen managed to clear the ball away from the area. In the 72nd minute, the Wanderers executed a short corner kick to Aiden Simmons, who attempted a shot from outside the penalty area. His accurate shot was headed away by Sydney FC's defense. Following this, the Wanderers received another corner kick. Nicholas Badolato's delivery was influenced by strong winds and was deflected by Gus Hoesfloot for yet another corner kick. Their third corner kick was taken by Edmun Haddad, where Luka Knezevic attempted to head the ball, but it went wide. In the 76th minute, Awan Lual passed to Luka Knezevic, who advanced past Sydney's defence and Gus Hoesfloot, scoring a goal. However, the sideline referee flagged for offside. The score remained 0-0. The Wanderers were applying considerable pressure on Sydney FC, leading to an error that nearly granted them an opportunity to score. Marin France made the error when he was pressured by several Wanderers players, resulting in a quick pass back to Gus Hoesfloot. Although Hoesfloot possessed the ball, it came off his hands. Luka Knezevic retrieved the ball and passed it to Nicholas Badolato, who took a shot that was saved brilliantly by Gus Hoesfloot. A save that’ll be in the video highlights later. Sydney was awarded a free kick in the 80th minute. Taye Hedley delivered a cross into the penalty area while the Wanderers attempted to clear the ball. Joseph Calusic gained possession and tried at goal. Although his shot surpassed the Wanderers' defence, it ultimately went wide. In the final 20 minutes, Sydney FC stalled by having Gus Hoesfloot kick the ball out, forcing the team to fall back and defend. Five minutes into injury time, The Wanderers attempted to score. They were awarded a free kick about 35 yards from the goal on the left-hand side of the field. Nicholas Badolato kicked the ball, which curled towards the goal posts, making it challenging for Gus Hoesfloot to defend. Hoesfloot managed to get the ball but fell backwards near the goal line. Some Wanderers players raised their hands, indicating he was over the line, but Brodie Merchant ruled "no goal". A minute later, referee Merchant had blown the whistle for full time to see no goals scored in the game. Despite the Wanderers NPL squad receiving a point in this game, they will treat this game as a loss as they were the far better team out of the two. Personally, they should have walked away with the three points. as they had 23 shots throughout the game (16 of them on target). The one point is a very unfortunate for the squad. The point sees them still on last with 5 points. The Central Coast Mariners Academy are also on 5 points but with a better goal difference (Mariners are minus 12, Wanderers are minus 13) and the Mariners have not played this round yet. The next game for the Wanderers NPL squad is against Manly United on Saturday 12th April 2025 at Wanderers Football Park. Kick off is scheduled for 3:30pm Edited 9 hours ago by MathyouWSW mack 1
