Second Derby Defeat For Wanderers

Personally I don't think it was as bad as people are saying. Look Smurfs have a superior squad across the park against ours. With the players we have  I am not sure what else we can do to even the odds outside of what they did in the 1st half. This squad is not top 6 material so I am not sure what people are expecting?

As much as people have been asking for Brillante to be dropped we saw in 10 minutes what happens when you have an inexperienced duo in midfield up against a player who can thread passes through the defence.

However I also saw us playing through the press. That 1st half was the first time this season we actually did it and we did multiple times throughout the game. Scicluna and Priestmann did a better job on  the ball to get us going, than if Brillante was there.

So my question becomes should we just stick Mata there in CDM. Just to give some experience. I mean it wasn't entirely terrible today. The 2nd half return was led by Mata dictating the play for us in midfield.

It wasn’t and I actually enjoyed the game despite the score line. It was a good hard game with plenty of feeling. For me it’s more bigger picture and just the relentlessness of failure and mediocrity. Im pretty sure I read something that Sydney are one game away from the record win streak in the derby which is crazy considering there was that period where we didn’t beat them for what felt like years. So that really amplifies our woes

When I was driving home I was saying to my son that even though the scoreline was bad that was nothing like the 4-1 loss from last year. I thought we played with good intensity, won a lot of our 1:1 battles and we did have a game plan. Putting balls over the top wasn't a bad plan and enabled us to take advantage of their highline

The one thing I blame Staj for is he should have tried harder to recruit at least one more fullback and an experienced CDM. If he had done that he would be at least getting a pass mark at this point.

Another reminder as well that lots of us wanted Zdrillic to come to us instead of Perth.

I genuinely don’t understand this attitude towards new people coming to games. We constantly lament the lack of support our league gets but then slap ridiculous labels like ‘plastics’ on people who become interested or at least buy a damn ticket

Just for context - my comment was in reply to another post about being able to hear ESFC over RBB, which was true. I was in the tier above RBB (what we would call the ‘away end’ in old language) and it was full of home fans and casuals there for the experience. I’m all for growing the game, but the weird seating definitely dented the noise output.

On another note, I find it absolutely ridiculous that it’s not even the end of November and we’ve already played two derbies, one of which was wasted during a round that had an elevated status anyway so really no point putting it on at the same time

I have been trying to figure out the logic of scheduling a derby in Unite Round, and I am still scratching my head. Giving us a free ticket to attend is all I can come up with.

I was an advocate for Zdrillic. Goes to show that a decent pedigree as an assistant doesn't necessarily mean you can make the transition to the head role.

Perth are also a basket case so he may have done better elsewhere, but he's surely leading the sack race right now.

I feel like we were better than that 1st derby. As others have noted, we're scoring goals but leaking more than we score. Our defense sucks balls.

They disnt necessarily outplay us but for the 10minute implosion bit. That is the worrying part for this season. However, bigger picture concern is that we're on the cusp of being worse than mediocre. Mediocre implies you're somewhere around the middle. Our trend is downwards. Our results per season are:

  1. 1st
  2. 2nd
  3. 9th
  4. 2nd
  5. 6th
  6. 7th
  7. 8th
  8. 9th
  9. 10th
  10. 4th
  11. 7th

I genuinely don't know what we need to do to turn it around, keeping mind the constraints and limitations of our league. Is it just a matter of cash splash for foreign players? 🤷‍♀️

And unfortunately I think it might be a clean sweep this time for the Smurfs with our current squad unless there is some recruitment in January.

I again don't think Mata will solve our issues. I am really questioning why we even have him. Staj tried him at 10 and he couldn't get the ball. We had a small window of him on the wing but it was clear that we were in trouble in transition when he played there. That CDM role seems to be the only place he fits in this system.

Like again I know some people want to change the system but that first half likw really you need to watch what we did. And I would really question whether we bring Brillante in. Priestmann and Scicluna did well its just they are inexperienced. So the way we are playing maybe Mata makes sense for the benefit of the team.

It was that bad on fact it was worse.

Should have been 5-2 and even that would have flattered us. 1 1 at half time was very fortunate.

First half we spent the game chasing lolley, costa and Caceras passing the ball to each other like a training drill.

Not to be funny but in what way other than having Thomas back were we better than derby 1.

We conceded 5 goals and 2 of them in 5 mins after half time.

Great that we want something to cling to but we are 6 rounds in and still look like half the players have never met each other

I cant imagine Stajcic being a manager who fires up his players. We had periods in the game where we looked alright in transition and played some nice football but again like the first derby, it looked like Sydney never really felt troubled. His press conference makes it seem like he’s already out of ideas and to be fair, i cant remember a WSW manager having this bad of a start

Let's say hypothetically the club decides they'll sacked Stajcic tonight (or tomorrow morning), who would you have to replace him?

Hayden Foxe.

The Wanderers only ever undefeated manager. :)

Bring Christensen in for the rest of the season and if he is bringing in the results, keep him on for the next season but if not, then bring someone else in. There are a few decent Aussie coaches going around, Pete Cklamovski, John Hutchinson, Shaun Ontong, Ross Aloisi.

We had a plan for how to score, which we actually executed well. I didn't see that in the first derby. We also played with much more intensity. For long stretches of the first half we were winning our 1:1 battles, which again didn't happen in the first derby.

We lost this due to defensive lapses because we don't have enough depth in defence.

Yeah this thread is just overwhelmingly negative, not good vibes

Without the defensive lapse of the early second half and the follow-on, we’d be jagging a point or even a tight win.

After we equalised at 1-1, we had all the momentum which was undone by stupidity in the early second half
