Wanderboy Posted October 21 Posted October 21 I'll leave it up to others like Matty and Paul to contribute to this thread and the stats. I don't have any official figures. It wasn't a bad start to the season though with 24 000+ in Auckland and 27 000+ at CommBank. nmh94 1

Mariners was disappointing. Jets did well. Nix a bit sad. the weather was good so now excuse. Bulls - probably 100 plus the same amount of cowbells. What a joke it was to bring them in. Thanks Gallop and Fox. Some good and bad crowds to start the season. It could have and should have been better. Mariners were the biggest disappointment of the round considering it was a GF replay. Weather played a part no doubt. StringerBellend and Unlimited 2

Sithslayer1991 Posted October 21 Posted October 21 For Macarthur they are slowly going up in crowds its gradual but its gone from high 2000s to low 4000s. Its also amazing the Jets despite being terrible still can get a better crowd over the Mariners and Nix despite how well their seasons have gone. Fun note Juan Mata is going to be so confused next weekend when he goes from 27,000 crowd to sub 5000 at Western United. That's some Saudi league heritage. nmh94 1

Newcastle sports fans in general are very parochial. The Knights got decent crowds when they are/were **** too. Plus they're a bit starved for sporting options so I think locals get behind them more. Couple that with the fact that Newcastle has a very strong football heritage. nmh94 1
mack Posted October 22 Posted October 22 Mariners have the trouble that 70% of their likely audience do not care about anything except a finals series, or late season big games, and their stadium is too big for anyone to bother getting memberships to ensure they don't miss out. Their biggest season average was 07/08 (12.7k) I believe, and if you look at their matches in that season their big crowds that season are Round 15, 18 and 20, and they were against the Jets, MVC and Sydney FC. Then 19k to their finals home game. They started off the season getting 8k and 9k, got a couple games with 11k then had a huge away game run (4 in a row) before the run into the finals with the big 17.5k, 18.6k and 19.2k games, then 9k to the final game due to severe rain & storms. nmh94 1

Less than Perth as well, who make us look like world beaters on the field. This might be unpopular, but it really isn't good enough from our fan base tbh. You would expect a dip for sure given our recent home record, but league worst for the round is embarrassing. We aren't the only supporters who have a mediocre side. Reality is this - overall crowds this year are up (thanks largely to Auckland) - we continue to go down (derby excepted, where there were a shitload for Sydney FC fans than normal).

BoyFromTheWest Posted Monday at 07:34 PM Posted Monday at 07:34 PM Yes, and it's Friday night. Friday night is always lower - work, getting to the game, other stuff have always reduced crowds on Friday nights.
Sithslayer1991 Posted Monday at 09:02 PM Posted Monday at 09:02 PM Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know why the crowds our low. Doesn't matter if a marquee is on the team or not, the people are sick of losing or looking at a team that doesn't make them proud. They want to win. Under our finals run in Rudan's 2nd year crowds got up to 10,000 average, in Rudan's final year at the end crowd's went down to 5000. The reality is the club needs to win to bring back the party atmosphere. MartinTyler, GunnerWanderer, Upthehill and 2 others 5

Just saying the answer to team x improving crowds is winning is a fallacy, because one teams win is by definition another teams loss. Fact also is Perth outdrew us last week, despite being, by any measure, a worse side. They haven't exactly been successful in the longer term either - last year's wooden spooners. For all our talk of passion, we love an excuse not to turn up. Edited Tuesday at 04:42 AM by nmh94 Edinburgh 1

Nathg Posted Tuesday at 08:04 AM Posted Tuesday at 08:04 AM (edited) In season 2, our group of members hit 16, family and friends all going to the games. There’s 3 of us left now, myself, dad and a mate. My mate has little intention of attending games, I think he is just keeping his foundation member number active. Dad lives in Kiama, will probably make half the games if lucky. I downgraded to a GA membership and will move to sit with them on games I can/bother to go to. The other 13? Majority of them wouldn’t even watch a game when on free to air. They’ve lost interest. I’d say that has happened to thousands of fans. Smoggy Posted Tuesday at 10:13 AM Posted Tuesday at 10:13 AM At the start it was me, my son and my father in law going to every home game plus all NSW away games. My father in laws last game was that Brissy SF at Parra, not been back since. He asks how we are going but doesn’t watch on tv either these days, cant see him coming back again. My son is 17 now and I reckon his generation has been hit hard you know. 10 to 12 years is very different when you are 17 as when you were aged 5 to 7 seems l way back, you cant even remember much of it. It’s not like a 46 year old looking back to 36. He shows intermittent interest is the best way to describe it, if he comes in and I have a game on the tv he will stand for a few mins and watch it and then say he has something to do. If I ask if he want to come to a game it gets a ‘hmmm maybe…depends….’…..I have got to the point I can’t be arsed going to game if he doesn’t tbh.. We will both be at the derby next week anyway. And oh yeah...my wife had a season ticket first few seasons so 4 of us went, but she didn't go to so many, doesn't really follow sport tbh. Happy times sat down in the south end at Parra watching my son messing about on the grass bank with other kids. Doing the ice cream run for the family. Wish I was back there.
