It’s easy to say this in retrospect. As I said, there was very little protest and quite a lot of approval when we signed Gombau, Robbo and MB. In fact most fans were actively asking for Gombau and Robbo and the club responded by hiring them

Robbo came with a reputable warning from Canada and was discussed at the time, it was also discussed how he had very little time at the Jets and hadn’t proved that much. His appointment came with a good dose of skepticism which was found to be warranted.

No surprise from me when he failed.

That's not what I heard him say. When all these coaches were brought in, we all were pleased that we got who we wanted and believed they would deliver the promised goal. They didn't and when they failed we, the fans, were amongst the biggest critics of the original decision (though it's what we wanted). I'm not sure he's defending anyone,  simply stating that fans have been very pleased with the appointment of several previous coaches, none of whom survived.

It is interesting about coaches. None of us would have picked Corica to build and coach the team he had in Auckland. He failed at Sydney in the FNC and the rhetoric here was that he only succeeded on the work Arnie did and only whilst the team he built lasted. In a new environment he doing well.

In fact most fans were actively asking for Gombau and Robbo and the club responded by hiring them.

verbatim

also, ease up on the straw-maning about 'we all' being happy with these appointments.

Staj - mixed reaction at best.

Rudes - mixed

I said some coaches,  as was implied previously, hey. I agree,  Rudes was very mixed for various reasons and Staj also very mixed as you rightly say. It was really the Barcalona Bus Driver and Robbo.

We've all got our opinions of Staj which is far enough.

Half the season is over and enough time in my mind to see if he has what it takes to make it.

With half the season left. The two questions I have is to any willing to put their opinions on the line is.

1. Is Staj the man to turn us around.

2. Will we make the six.

My answer to both questions is NO.

Over to all of you.

Short answer - no, our defence is poor.

Long answer - I don't think there is anyone who can turn us around. The board aren't interested in long term planning like a director of football. We could have the guy who's coaching Liverpool at the moment and still stuff up. If the team doesn't win at home, less people turn up and the club loses revenue to invest in long term football development.

Nope - we would need to win 7 of our remaining 13 games

There is no evidence to suggest he can turn around this around there is no similar situation to go from on this with Staj. His best work was in women’s football. The defence is dreadful, we rely on Clisby week in week out, we can’t play at home and even when we win a game (usually away) we never really look in control, it’s all a bit crazy. The idea behind bringing Staj in was for stability and build a solid foundation, I see non of that, we will end this season in as big a mess as any of the previous decade.

2. Will we make the six.

No. With our defence we don’t deserve to. Even if we did we would be smashed the first week.

I'm a naysayer

But

Gumby I didn't want him, too much of a theorist all about the endless passing etc. I argued constantly with @mack on that one but for Gumby got Adelaide moving the right way but Amor got them to winning a GF

DJ Bavaria, I still don't know how that didn't work, I really really thought he'd be the dude to transform us and Australian footy. On the plus side he has great clothes.

Rudan got to be honest I always thought he would be the post Popa manager, I wasn't personally that keen for all the off field stuff than on field, I didn't the see implode coming

JP did anyone think that was going to work

Carlo we for him based on about 7 games with the Jets, he was terrible

Long way of saying yes we have sacked managers quickly but you could argue that we actually have a couple of them too long.

Rudan season 2 was a complete waste of time (although he did bring Milanovic in)

I wasnt keen on Staj. In the market there was Popa, kisnorbo and Hutchison two a league winners and a runner up, we went for the wooden spoon winner.

He's here now so I hope it works and I really I hope @william can say I tell you so.

I just want is to win at home have a real go at the finals again, is that too much to ask.

Call be a hopeless optimist but I still think we can this year, even without a new CB but it will require a big change in attitude

Yes, by winning a trophy, something our club hasn't done in the time since, or even got to the final of yet (along with Nix, Jets & WU). :ninja:

JP has a 43% WR as a manager in his 14 games in charge of WSW. That's identical to Popovic (over his entire career, cbf figuring out his WSW stats only) and better than all the other coaches we've had. Lederer sacking JP for Robinson (3 months after appointing him full time) was the final nail in the coffin of the post-covid chance to rebuild the club.

Replacing a guy who knew the league and knew the country who had done a good enough job to earn that contract in the first place, getting taken out back and put down for Robinson and the self-dealing his player agency introduced stuck us in a deep hole for 5 years now.

Be glad we didn't get Kisnorbo otherwise we would be even more screwed now. Hutchinson was never going to come here after he turned around Yokohama F Marinos aftwr what Kewel did his stock in Japan went up.

Popa was probably the only realistic big name we could go for. But the new head of the trust went with Staj.

1. He's capable, i think it's less likely than not though.

I'd keep him for the rest of the season either way.

2. No.

Could be a yes and yes.

I really have no idea.

It can't be a yes and a no though

Or it could be Rudan again in which chase it's a no and yes

Yep.

Defense is frustrating, some setups are head scratching, but we are moving the ball into attack in ways i literally havent seen with any regularity for years.

(It's a low bar though lol)

Oh yes, transition to attack is deff an area of improvement. I mean.. we spent a whole season under Carlo passing the ball sideways and backwards. At least we can pick a forward pass now! So sloppy with turn overs though.

It's not all bad under Staj....it's just if we miss the finals again...it's not good enough...and that defense....uggghhhh, he should be fired for that alone.

Ok all good stufff you mostly have decided that Staj is a dud and should be sent to purgatory where Rudan , Robbo The German and Gombau and in there a couple of times De Marigney all classed as Duds ,failures can’t recruit , can’t pick correct teams , can’t sub players on correctly , absolute failures all replace some earlier than others and Staj is now with them

So!!!!!

When we sack Staj, as soon as possible if I read this room correctly who will be get to replace him Ninko nil experience , no one else in the club could do it !!!!

And when we do replace him with someone based on the above rolling form that’s minimum of 10 years of duds and new coach comes in some one here has decided he is a dud  and not hard to guess who 😎

So Staj is gone next week who do we get to fill the hole for the next 18 months or so before they get sent to purgatory and on an and on .

Might as well put Ninko in , throw him to the wolves

tell me what is going to change based on our last 5 or  6 coach rollovers

tell me

Staj should absolutely see out the season, and the club should (as it seems it is) back him this window.

If he turns it around we will build him a statue. If it doesn't, we won't be as toxic a prospect for other coaches. Sacking him now after selling him as a stability option makes us look even worse to any possible replacements.

The managerial recruitment of the last 8 or 9 years is not our fault, we can only discuss what has been served up across the time and it hasn't been good enough.

There are other issues at play of course other than managerial, Lederer and co don't get away from criticism of course. The whole culture of the club was smashed when Popa left and we moved to Olympic Park, Gombie you could perhaps argue had the hardest gig following Popa and being at Spotless, but his playing style bordered on the bizarre at times...and failed. There is maybe an argument for more time...maybe.

This comp drove our trendy German insane, I don't think he was perpared for this comp and playing / ref standard. He would have been admitted to an institution if he stayed another season...

Carlo..said enough about him. The worst of all in my opinion. Not sure what was worse, his playing style or delusional press conferences...just awful...

So yes we have burned through managers, there are no easy solutions but we cannot keep missing finals football..

For the record I don't mind Staj, I like the fella. But again the football at times is a joke...

So what are we left with, what are we supposed to discuss here...are we expected to accept constant failure? It would be easy to support Staj if I could see a clear plan and trajectory towards something. Perhaps there still is. I an not entirely on the Staj out comp yet...

But no point giving us a hard time for discussing what we see eh..

nothing

that's the point - it's the football equivalent of purgatory

therefore no need to stress out

when I went to the City away game, I enjoyed the win for what it was - (a one off)

Staj is consistently frustrating

we seemed to be able to get results on the road, but we are terrible at home.

he does have a knack for making the right subs at times, but that's because he made terrible calls with the starting team for that game.

our defence leaks goals, but we seem to be able to score goals as well

Our defence is very limited, but you could argue that Staj has them somewhat more solid than what we were in October & November. (im living nightmares now just thinking about it)

Gersbach will be a starter no doubt when fit
does Jeong replace one of the CB's when he returns - likely yes
if we sign another CB in this window, do they become a starter - likely yes

so fair to say 75% of our back line arent 1st choice starters

Sydney are 3 points ahead of us, scoring 3 more and conceding 2 less goals than us - our backline is very much inferior to their backline.

i still maintain if we can nab a CB and shore up our defence - we can unsettle the league
