A-League Women 2023/2024

It's worrying that we've hired a Head Coach who admits he hasn't followed the league "very closely" - literally 10 days prior to the season start.

Especially considering it's someone who lives in the same damn country and state and city that the league is played in.

This is honesty so disrespectful to the players, the league itself, and the fans.

Our W League team is basically treated like kids development squad. Soon as players get anywhere near their peak they leave.

In mildly related news my daughter did a goalie course last week at Rooty Hill the coach was one of the A League Womens goalkeepers she was ace..Can't remember her name so thought I'd look up squad on the website, of course the goalkeepers aren't listed yet

I don’t usually gamble on sports but what’s Sportsbet paying for the WSW W-League wooden spoon…

We'll be lucky if Sportsb*t even have the women's matches as options - last year I 'may have' contacted them to put certain matches up as options... (it was during our "winning streak")

If I read that Twitter thread correctly the club are offering discounts from the original $150 charged down to $80 for existing WSW members for the women's membership BUT you have to contact the club, they won't just refund you the $70 if you paid the full amount. Seems a bit sneaky if true.

I just emailed them telling them how pissed off I am at the club being run by complete idiots, and charging some of the highest membership prices to boot.

WSW are a bunch of flogs

yea not looking good the team still has Bolden and Harrisson, but less than great going into the season.

Bolden is currently "unattached" - has not been confirmed with any club as of yet.

Sounds on brand though.

Going through that Twitter thread, There was a complaint that the club doesn't do enough to retain the players, and they even pay them pretty low, is there any truth to that?

So one of our Keepers has posted on Instagram that they've signed with WSW - but WSW haven't announced it yet.  Hmmm.

But yeah, our Keepers appear to be: Kaylie Collins (American) and Keely Segavcic (a local, from King Langley I believe - and who has been a train-on for WSW previously)

What a **** show....a few thoughts:

Was he approached or did he apply?

Were all the new signings Kat's picks?

Is Tom Sermanni still involved with the club?

I think Keely was coaching  the kids Goalkeeper course at football park. She was ace and had just come from training. Went on the web to look up her name and no GKs are listed, must make players feel highly valued.

My daughter is super keen on being a GK now, the women's world cup has had a part in that

According to one of the player's Instagram posts, they've got one more game left of preseason.

Wow, one pregame match with the new coach before we get absolutely annihilated (understatement) by Sydney FC in Round One!!

The women are behind the three major men's teams plus Newcastle Jets for funding priority.

The club don't care about the women being successful or not just how much it costs. never have cared except one season where it cost too much money and everyone who did good work quit because the club wasn't going to fund it enough to build on the minor success.

Lederer absolutely would defund the team if he wasn't using them as an excuse to get state govt funding.

So, basically, we’re owned and run by a pack of *****, headed by a rich old man.

It’s an absolute shame because there have been some excellent players who have played minutes for the club - most notably and recently Clare Hunt and Ellie Carpenter

Like literally world class women’s players but noooo we get an extra training pitch instead

It’s a bit sad tbh

And don’t forget the woman of the moment - Cortnee Vine!!

:(

And it is no surprise that two of those (Carpenter and Vine) both left for greener pastures (and probably better pay) to rival clubs.

Can almost guarantee if Hunt hadn't done so well at the World Cup she would've been poached by City or ESFC or another club with some actual ambition.

Kyra Cooney Cross too.

If you go to the 5s pitch they have posters up of all the Matildas that have played for WSW the bit it fails to mention is the majority of them played one season before going elsewhere

Hunt is the only one we had at her A League peak

Then add players like

Jada whyman

And Rachel Lowe

That's a lot isn't it something is very wrong and has been for years.. but charging members extra $ will fix it

it won't it will just mean less people at the games

Yep.

Didn't realise there could be negative numbers of attendees at matches..!  :cheeky:
