Arnold pulled a Carl Robinson when he said " I can't score the goals for them" you knew there was problems in the background.

And Herve Renard is Free atm. That's who we should get.

So we have options:

- Kevin Muscat
- Tony Popovic
- John van't Schip (if he has any interest in coaching the national team)
- Arthur Papas

Duncan Ferguson

It would be ace, actually scrap that Shaun Dyche will be looking for a job soon

What's Klopp up to

It's ironic isn't it that at the World Cup we over performed, matched it with Argentina and played good football....( the French game aside) .

Yet here we are struggling to even qualify in an expanded and supposedly easier group stage.

I'm glad Arnie is gone because our football was terrible. I don't have the knowledge of who is a good coach as some on this forum do but for ffs we need to get  someone with an attacking mindset......not this side to side and back passing bullshit.

Unfortunately that style seems to be rampant worldwide at present at almost all levels of  football.

Apparently Popa is the front runner so don't expect a revolution in coaching or tactics. Cheap (relatively speaking) and readily available will probably be the determining factors.

Not really a big fan of Popa of being national coach, it seems more like sidestep to Arnie.

Albeit Popa does have a better record in Asia than Arnie but even so, Popa's style of play doesn't suit most of the players in the national team

Was thinking the same thing.

If we don't qualify he gets the blame not Arnie.

Wait and see I guess.

His football isn’t the best but it is good to see that someone who proved themselves here in the A-League is now rewarded with the nation’s top job

I also question Popa style for the national team. Out of the domestic contingent that haven't coached the NT only Muscat can really say that he has a better record than Popa. The issue is the ultra pragmatic/defensive style Popa plays. It was an issue in our 15/16 season where we play a more possession style but couldn't score enough. And it was an issue again with Victory where Victory couldn't score goals if Bruno didn't score, despite having enough quality to do so.

I am not sure what difference Popa will bring that Arnold didn't. They only positive I can see is we actually might scrape points against Japan because of the discipline he brings. But we really need our attack to get going against China otherwise it doesn't matter how well we defend. I wander if he looks at Luongo again for the midfield

? He got promoted to the Premier League with Ipswich Town.

Luongo retired from the national team shortly after being selected again a while back.  Shame, he was probably our best player when he was recalled.

And the reason quoted why he retired at the time was he was focused on trying to get Ipswich Town to the Premier League.

And now he is relegated to the bench with the Tractor Boys.

Popa was the only available local coach  qualified to take over I don’t think this is a surprise at all - after the shakey start and the fact it’s too risky to bring in a foreign manager with qualification bordering on collapse Popa is probably the only logical choice.

They could have made him interim coach and continued the search - good luck to him probably the worse state the national team has been in since Ange took over so he will have a tough job.

retired from the national team.  Arnold favored Baccus and Irvine in the middle.

Still doing well with Ipswich may be worth bringing back.

Id have him back in a heart beat. I suspect though he feels like that chapter is closed. Travelling from the UK to asia is terrible, and worse when you risk losing your spot to someone else while you're away. He's said many times over the years he dreamed of playing in the PL and playing for australia poses a risk no doubt, for both injury and playing time.

If this is the attitude he can stay far far away from the national side.

Far away.

Far away.

I mean, thats kind of the point.... and you try to frame that like its a bad thing. The guy won the biggest, shiniest piece of silverware australia is ever going to win. He then got ignored by the NT for 6 years, but still came back to put some minute in when he was called on. Then when he says "I Have something I want to accomplish at club level", the response is "stay far away". Cant blame him if he does....
