https://wswanderersfc.com.au/news/independent-disciplinary-ethics-committee-hearing-outcome-marcelo

On Wednesday, 12 April 2023, the Football Australia independent Disciplinary & Ethics Committee comprising Anthony Lo Surdo SC (Chair), Ben Jones, and Peter Tsekenis (the Committee) convened to consider an incident referred to it, which occurred in or around the 93rd minute of Western Sydney Wanderers FC’s Round 22 Isuzu UTE A-League Men match against Adelaide United FC on Friday, 31 March 2023 (the Match). The incident involved Western Sydney Wanderers’ player, Marcelo Guedes (Marcelo).

On 4 April 2023, in accordance with the A-Leagues Disciplinary Regulations (Regulations), the matter was referred directly to the Committee by the independent Match Review Panel (MRP) as it formed the view that a sanction of greater than four (4) matches was warranted and was therefore required to refer the matter under the Regulations. The MRP had jurisdiction to consider the incident as Marcelo was issued with a direct red card in the Match.

The Committee determined that:

Marcelo must serve a suspension of two (2) A-League Men matches; and

Marcelo be issued with a suspended sanction of a further two (2) A-League Men matches or Australia Cup matches, as applicable, which will be triggered in the event that the Referee issues Marcelo with a direct red card or an indirect red card in any A-League Men match or Australia Cup match (as applicable) up until, and including, 31 December 2023.

Subject to any appeal by Marcelo in accordance with the Regulations, as outlined below, Marcelo:

served one (1) match of his suspension against Macarthur FC in Round 23 of the A-League Men on 8 April 2023; and

will be ineligible for Western Sydney Wanderers FC’s next A-League Men match against Melbourne Victory FC on 15 April 2023.

Marcelo has the right to appeal the determination of the Committee to Football Australia’s independent Appeals Committee. If Marcelo intends to do so, he must advise Football Australia within seven (7) days of receiving the written determination.

Has anyone else in the history of the A-League got slapped with suspended sentences for more cards?

O'Donovan didn't when headbutted Manny Muscat or when he smashed Thomas in the face. I don't think Kevin Muscat got any when he did his assault on Zahra. Don't think the Fabiano & Papadopolous spitting cases got them any suspensions.

It's like they picked one player out of the whole league to throw the book at for a minor incident that hurt no-one. Kaltak's done three straight red card this season where's his additional suspended suspension?

Yep let other teams kick the crap out of our players and stand back, watch and wait for MRC impose very strong punishments... Lol

Can't see him taking a back seat bit hope he keeps his arms and feet to himself. The whole thing is a bit stupid, really and I wonder if it would have been different if it wasn't the star child, Irankunda??

Take home message: run as far as you like and get in anyone's face but do not touch another player with your hands (especially a young starlet) or stop a melee, even if the ref does nothing.

Well it is good news if you like me thought he would be getting a minimum of 4 weeks or more

And the supporters of other clubs have stated their displeasure on the FTBL forum

Anyone remember that two footed off the ground lunge that Rhyan Grant did where both feet went studs up into his opponent, hitting them in the ankle & knee? That got three weeks reduced on appeal to two because of course Sydney FC get a successful appeal.

The FFA are saying that Marcelo's non-damaging "headlock" was as bad as that tackle and that it deserves an additional two games punishment that just happened to be a suspended sentence because it's clearly ridiculous to ban a player for a month when there was no actual physical attack/punch/kick etc.

Barr's action in running 40-50 metres to shirt front Marcelo must have been taken into consideration.

And Shaun Evans still gets a game Smurfs v Perth.

the Rhyan Grant tackle should have got more, yes - but it shouldn't matter how non damaging Marcelo's headlocks are - he's still putting people in headlocks, which is a deliberate choice to attack the head of a player when the game isn't really in play, at least with Grant's attempted tackles/murders they are in an attempt to play the game.

I still argue that Marcello didn't get either in a 'headlock' and certainly didn't attack the head of any player. He grabs a player around the neck/shoulders and pulls them in to a place where neither can fight. It isn't hurting anyone but actually prevents violence. The trouble is it looks violent and aggressive - mind you his size and looks don't help.

The tackles that have landed only 2 weeks are often leg-breakers. The violence of retaliation is worse than Marcello.
