Did injuries hamper him. Or was it just Corica limiting his appearances?

Definitely hampered by injuries. However the rumour is that they were poorly mismanaged by Sydney, which soured the relationship between Nieuwenhof and the club. Sounded like he was kept out of the game because of the mismanagement a lot more than he should've been.

He is a talent though, I hope he can flourish under a different environment and reach his potential.

Would be even more hilarious if he played like tonight in the derby next month.

Hilarious you say

Me say "That would exhilarating"

Rudan gave the short version of why he is with us in the press conference. He must have been really p***ed off with the Smurfs.

Isn’t he on a scholarship contract with us?

As much as I like Keanu Baccus, I just feel that Calem is offering us much more already, yet Keanu is on the plane to Qatar after only a handful of games in Scotland !!

Both are benefiting from their respective squads this season being stronger than we were last season.

Baccus has also been with the U23s at the Olympics etc so has more (albeit junior) international experience and Arnie is more familiar with him.

Arnold picking Baccus and Devlin is good reward for their strong form I would not be shocked to see one of them get picked for Minutes - he needs some players who can run and chase mooy and hrustic don’t fit that model A Irvine is but can’t expect him to do 3 90 mins games of it in a week

Hof might be there for Asia cup way he is going!

Fair point....my initial post was slightly tongue-in-cheek and no way was I expecting Calem to be announced

The Socceroos really lack that proper number 6 midfield destroyer type since Jedinak and Milligan retired. Might be too early this World Cup but I could see Baccus or Devlin making a claim for that spot.

CALEM NIEUWENHOF NAMED OCTOBER/NOVEMBER NOMINEE FOR YOUNG FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR

Calem Nieuwenhof named October/November nominee for Young Footballer of the Year

Western Sydney Wanderers central midfielder Calem Nieuwenhof has been rewarded for a sensational start to the 2022-23 Isuzu UTE A-League season, earning the October/November nomination for Young Footballer of the Year.

Nieuwenhof, 21, has revelled in his crosstown move from Sydney FC to Wanderland, starting in all six games of the new campaign under Western Sydney head coach Marko Rudan.

Alongside Romain Amalfitano in the centre of the park, Nieuwenhof has featured in all but five minutes of the Wanderers’ campaign thus far. This comes after three seasons in Sky Blue which garnered just five starts in total.

Across October and November Nieuwenhof started in one defeat to Central Coast, a draw with Brisbane Roar and wins over Perth Glory, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC, the last of which coming in a hostile Sydney Derby at the home of his former side Allianz Stadium.

Nieuwenhof leads the league in tackles (28) over the first six rounds of the season, and sits third in ball recoveries (58) behind only Western United’s Neil Kilkenny and Sydney FC’s Luke Brattan. Positioning and willingness to get on the ball and bring control to the Wanderers midfield are key features of Nieuwenhof’s game, who is excelling at his new club – on a scholarship contract, no less.

I hope he wins it. Congrats, Calem! :clapping:

Fingers crossed!

Its just a matter of time before him and Baccus are controlling the midfield for the NT

If his form holds you would think he will go to the Asian Cup. I hope the club offers a senior contract in the interim. One of the signings of the season so far.
