I took the train to Canberra once, I think even the staff on the train think you are crazy for doing that.  Soooo slow.....

And then it dumps you at a middle of nowhere station, on the outskirts of a middle of nowhere city to be ask by a taxi driver just why did I take the train...

It was an odd combination of travellers lol

Ah yes, I did that before about 3 years ago, take the train from Campbelltown and get down to Canberra as I had to pick up my new car from there.

I was told that a bus from Central would have been quicker to take than the train.

I was cleaning up my place during the Easter long weekend, I found this book that my uncle gave to me when I was studying engineering back at uni, it had a list of proposed roads and motorways for Sydney and NSW, this was dated in 2006.

- M7 & M2 linking up with the F3
Status in 2006: Proposal, now built as the North Connex

- Wollongong to Singleton highway replacing the Northern Road, Appin Road and Putty Road.
Status in 2006: Proposal cancelled, however, This is the M9 and it's currently being built to cater for the Badgerys Creek airport, and will run from Camden all the way up to Richmond and to be linked with the M12 which will have a junction at the Airport to connect the M9 to the M7

- M4 West extension to Lithgow replacing the Bells Line of Road and linking the M2 West
Status in 2006: Proposal cancelled, but in 2017, this was investigated by the state government but in turn cancelled the whole thing, the new proposal would have saw the M4 linking up with the M9, extend the M2 and cut through the Blue mountains towards Lithgow.  This was cancelled because it would have caused a major environmental impact to the blue mountains.

- M4 East Extension to City CBD and Airport
Status in 2006: Proposal, but now 3 stages are complete, we now have the West Connex tunnel that goes towards Ashfield and will be extended to the airport when they link up with the Sydney Gateway

- Northern Beaches Freeway linking up with the M2
Status in 2006: Proposal Cancelled, proposal was raised in 2003, then cancelled in 2006, the aim linking the Northern beaches tunnel from the lane Cove runnel at the Pacific Highway intersection in Artarmon but has got knocked back. Now the new proposal for a Northern Beaches tunnel linking up with the Sydney Harbour tunnel.

- F3 Extension to Armidale replacing the New England Highway
Status in 2006: Proposed, construction was supposed to start in 2009 but got cancelled and they decided on the Hunter Expressway instead

- M5 East from the Airport connecting the F6 to Wollongong replacing the Princes Highway between Arncliffe and Waterfall.
Status in 2006: Proposal cancelled, but its been brought up again and stage 1 is under construction. Route is between the M8 in Arncliffe all the way down to President Ave in Kogarah. Possible extension to waterfall maybe considered.

- Sydney By-Pass
Status in 2006: Cancelled. the proposal was to build a highway between Goulburn to Bathurst to take trucks and freight off Sydney roads and the Blue Mountains but believed there was no point as the roads between Goulburn and Bathurst experience extreme weather and little traffic, they might however build a highway between Goulburn to Taralga but thats about it

A highway between Goulburn and Taralga seems a bit silly. It's not that far and it's not that much used is it?

If they want something between Goulburn to Taralga to take trucks / freight reopen the Goulburn to Taralga railway.

This looks like that this project might get canned now that the Labor government have been elected, the Liberal Government did promise to fund the Northern Beaches link if they were re-elected in the federal election

BMs tunnel has basically been canned as well. That was a fun couple of weeks.

Are you pro or anti tunnel?

Stage 2 of this tunnel between Kogarah and Loftus has been canned as well.

NSW government can't complete these projects without Federal funding and there are fears that other infrastructure projects  will be half finished if they cannot get more funding from the Federal government to complete them

Bit of an update on the St.Marys Metro Station. This guy does a brilliant job explaining what will happen throughout the whole update.

Back in the day when I used to travel to Kingswood for school ( St Doms ) the old goods building was still in use......when sending goods by rail was still a thing.

Federal APL plan for high speed rail between Sydney & Newcastle.... state and feds going 50 / 50 if it goes ahead

One report I read was the Sydney connection would be ... Epping... Parramatta... Campbelltown...

https://www.alp.org.au/policies/fast-rail-between-sydney-and-the-hunter

250 Kl.... if Parra chosen... half an hour to travel to see the Mighty Mariners... and then another 15 minutes to see the Jerks..... maybe 5 minutes to see the Cows...

Fast trains...in Australia....chhyeah right lol :D

That has been promised every year since the early 80's.

It's hard to take new reports seriously tbh.

Both sides of the politics have been promising to build high speed rail for much longer than my dad has been alive.

Also 250kph for a high speed rail is now considered 'slow' in today's standards as both China and Japan are looking to build 500kph+ Maglev trains, China already has a Maglev rail line from Shanghai Airport to the city which I pleasantly took in my 2016 trip to China and the train reached the city 30km out within 10minutes at the speed of about 350-400kph.

China are currently building a Maglev rail link between Shanghai and Hangzhou which is about 200km from each other and the time to get there will be less than 30min.

I doubt Australia will be able to afford building a Maglev rail because the cost to build that 30km link from Airport to city was about was about $1.5 billion, imagine how much that would cost to build one from Sydney to Canberra

Australia should have started building sections for high speed rail in the late 70's.

It should now be discussing how outdated the high speed rail here is and that it needs upgrading to standards in China and Japan...

And yet here we are..not even started and still discussing acquiring land corridors for 40 odd years :D

We won't see high speed rail in Australia in the life time of anyone who posts on this forum.

Just as we sit back and laugh at Bradfield’s original Sydney railway plan and what wasn’t built….so will those in 2100 looking back at this video at what was never built.
