Fantastic win away from home against recent ACL Champions. I have never cheered so much for MV, but even King Kenny deserved a crown tonight - his first decent performance of the year. That took incredible spirit to play in driving rain and win 1-0 (Nabbout) against such a well-credentialed side, even if they were in pre-season. Credit where credit is due - well done MV and their interim coach, who always seemed a better fit than Kurz. They are now into the group stage, and we can only wish them luck.

First decent performance ever.

Not denying this, best performance of the season, one which I didn’t think could happen under the assistant now interim manager but...

Carlos Salvachua to return to Europe.

Melbourne Victory would like to thank Carlos Salvachua for his service to the club, following his decision to return to Europe.

The 47-year-old informed the club last week of his desire to continue his professional coaching career in Europe and to be closer to his extended family in Spain.

Victory CEO Trent Jacobs said Salvachua had been the consummate professional since arriving as Kevin Muscat’s assistant ahead of the 2018/19 A-League season.

“On behalf of everyone at Melbourne Victory we would like to thank Carlos for his professionalism, hard work and commitment to our Club over the past two seasons,” Jacobs said.

“Given the current environment around the world and the fact we are working through a process to appoint our next A-League Head Coach, we understand and accept Carlos’ decision to return to Europe.

“Carlos arrived as Kevin Muscat’s assistant ahead of the 2018/19 season, before stepping up as Head Coach during the 2019/20 season.

“Carlos’ short tenure as Head Coach included securing our Club’s first away win in the AFC Champions League, ultimately seeing us qualifying for the 2020 Group Stage.

“We wish Carlos and his family a safe return to Europe and we wish him all the best for the next chapter in his coaching career.”

Salvachua said he would look back fondly on his time in Melbourne.

“I would like to thank Melbourne Victory for the way they have looked after myself and my family since we arrived in Australia,” Salvachua said.

“It has been a pleasure to help coach the club over the past two seasons. The decision to return to Europe is an opportunity to continue my coaching career, and the other major upside which is to be closer to our extended family in Spain.

“I want to personally thank the Victory Board, players, football and administration staff for all their hard work and support and thank you to the members and fans for supporting the team. I wish everyone at Victory all the best for future.

“Continue to look after each other and stand by the club. Adiós and thank you Melbourne.”

The club will advise on the coaching structure for the remainder of the 2019/20 season shortly.

Wellington Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay has emerged as a contender alongside Tony Popovic and John Aloisi for the Melbourne Victory job. Interest in Popovic has cooled somewhat as he is a costly option and would be keen for his sons to join the squad. [SBS]

What a merry-go-round!

This is the league Tando Velaphi has played 104 games. Where Mahazi played 89 games. Where Corey Gamiero played 51 games as a striker and scored only 5 goals. Where Jake McGing has played for 5 seasons and is moving to a fourth A-League club next year.

The bar is not very high.

Good luck to Lawrence Thomas, I do remember he was off contract at the end of this season. I think he'll either meet up with Muscat at Sint-Truiden or either go to some Danish club (maybe AGF?, would be nice to see him getting some game time in the Europa league).

Victory are in a world of trouble. At one stage I checked and they had 21 players off contract at the end of this season:

- Matt Acton
- Kenny Aithu
- Jay Barnett
- Corey Brown (transferred to Brisbane Roar in January)
- Benjamin Carrigan
- Thomas Deng (transferred to Urawa Red Diamonds)
- Kristijan Dobras (left and then signed to FC Irtysh Pavlodar in Kazakstan)
- James Donachie (extended contract for 1 year)
- Tim Hoogland (released)
- Joshua hope (extended contract for 1 year)
- Elvis Kamsoba
- Birdan Kirdar
- Anthony Lesiotis
- Andrew Nabbout
- Jakob Poulsen (retired)
- Storm Roux
- Matthew Sutton
- Lawrence Thomas (released, off to Europe)
- Ola Toivonen (released)
- Adama Traore
- Giancarlo Gallifuoco

So as of this post, all they have signed for next season is:

- James Donachie
- Leigh Broxham
- Robbie Kruse
- Joshua Hope
- Migjen Basha
- Marco Rojas
- Brandon Lauton

They really need to pull their finger out.

I'd probably keep Acton as a reserve keeper, Storm Roux & Traore as fullbacks, Nabbout will probably chase more cash at another club and the rest are mediocre to bad.
