Wouldnt be bad if they had a training session & then head for a few drinks afterwards (10am is when training ends right )

The Centre of excellence at Blacktown could not be a worse place for a social club.

Tbh, we missed the opportunity for a decent club at that Bowlo club beside the river when it was being sold. They were probably asking too much at the time.

If not that, (and I know real estate is expensive in Parra) there are plenty of opportunities in the Parra CBD to set up a club. It doesn't mean it has to be an exclusive Wanderers club and get used 13-15 times a year. 

It can be just like a pub, or a Marconi style situation, yet in the heart of Parra. Would get used 362 days of the year.

Somewhere in the new Parramatta Town Square would be ******* perfect.

The devil, as always, is in the detail. Like the fact that the senior pitches at the Wanderers’ new training centre are the same size as Bankwest Stadium’s, to the centimetre.

Like the fact that the floodlights on every one of the nine pitches will be, with 500lux LED power, so bright you could broadcast an FFA Cup game on TV.

Like the orientation of the gym and its floor to ceiling windows that mean a player in rehab is just yards away from the training pitches and visually connected.

And like the blinds on the windows in the media centre, ready to secure training sessions from prying eyes.

It’s not just on game day that the new season promises so much for Western Sydney. After years of training in the midst of children’s athletics carnivals, with dressing rooms so far removed they were almost in a different suburb, the Wanderers players will return for pre-season at the $15m centre of excellence that has been years in the making.

Off-field staff will be in much sooner - Monday in fact, and there was a noticeable spring in the step of staff moving their equipment across on Friday morning, even in pouring rain.

As a way of drawing a line under the past two seasons it is hugely symbolic, but the facility is all about the future. Three pitches are ready now and the other six will be in use by January, housing the A-League and W-League teams right down to the youngest junior teams on one 11ha site.

The complex was designed after chairman Paul Lederer and CEO John Tsatsimas toured elite clubs around the world and garnered ideas from all of them.

The female teams have their own dedicated changing rooms.

All of the academy coaches share an office with Markus Babbel. And at the centre of it all is the $1m gym which means for the first time the A-League players will scarcely have to leave the site during their working day.

A coffee shop tender has just been awarded to provide a base for parents while their children train in the academy teams, and eventually a licensed club will follow to allow supporters to use the complex.

Famously there are no registration fees charged to those players. “In this area, there are people who can afford it, but there are lots who can’t,” said Lederer. “It would be a travesty if young talented kids couldn’t play because they can’t afford to.”

The whole site has been leased from Blacktown City Council, who will maintain the pitches. “Having the Wanderers based here gives hope and inspiration to local residents, there’s a pathway from local teams right up to the A-League,” said mayor Steve Bali.

In every sense, the Wanderers are coming home. Now they just have to start winning again.

A Leagues club is one that is attached to a rugby league club in some way, or at least was at the beginning.

An RSL club is run by the Returned Services League (just to make things confusing). I don't know if they would see themselves as a "Leagues Club" if they were being finicky.

It's such as shame the Roxy site has a DA in place. Imagine the club running that on match days as their own licensed venue - that was the perfect venue back in the day for a pre/post match gathering.

Do you know what the DA is for? It's been closed 5 years, is it ever going to be re-developed?

Someone posted it on this forum. The original structure is being turned into an arcade style shopping mall and then they’re building a massive tower on top of it. May as well not even have a heritage listing on it...

That was me.

The plan is to restore the theatre and forecourt and and build an office block partly over the top of it.

It does have a heritage listing on it, and the original plan was kyboshed, even though the original Roxy building remained mainly intact, and indeed, was to be restored to its former glory.  The Heritage Council of Australia opposed the development due to the office block, but in reality, this was the best thing for the Roxy. It's currently sitting there as a ruin and the developer wants to pour millions into it. Anyway, the developer is still keen to go ahead. They will however have to amend the design. That's where it currently stands.

Its amazing I've actually seen some positive responses to the Academy online....as if these people only just found out it was happening ffs.

The amount of WSW fans that have nfi the academy and surrounds was happening due to their perceived "we weren't told anything" is astounding. Pretty sure there were updates in many enewsletter - which is the main form of comms by the club.

They have world class facilities and stadium.

There's no excuses for next season now. We know it. The club know it.

Plans to build a high-rise tower over the Roxy Theatre have been recommended for rejection by the Heritage Council of NSW.

The plans, which included 33 storeys of office space set back from the theatre’s Art Deco facade, were rejected because of the “visual impact” on the heritage building. Its ruling states there is a “disparity in scale” between the 1930s theatre and the office block.

The recommendations suggest the heritage council be consulted on any future design.

Owner David Kingston said the plans he has submitted fort he tower have been “carefully prepared” and supported by Parramatta businesses and residents.

“The current DA Plans were carefully prepared after extensive consultation with Council and two leading heritage architects who strongly support the five level Leisure (and) Cultural complex and 30 Level Tower. The Plans are fully compliant with Council’s height and FSR and usage requirements,” he said.


Plans for the tower were released in December last year.
“The current DA Plans have received extensive support from the Parramatta business and residential communities who are very keen to access the world class facilities.”

Mr Kingston called the recommendation by the Heritage Council inappropriate for cherry picking parts of the development application.

“If the authorities seek to impose unrealistic limitations, they will deprive Parramatta of world class facilities,” he said.

The decision has been welcomed by members of the Parramatta Roxy Theatre Action Group who want the theatre restored.

Group member Robert Fox said the Roxy could be western Sydney’s answer to the Opera House.


Along with the front renovation, owner David Kingston also planned a high rise office tower towards the back of the building.
“We could have the Australian Ballet or stage musicals like Phantom of the Opera in Parramatta,” he said. “If this is the heartland of Sydney then it deserves a lyric theatre that will match the Opera House or the Sydney Lyric Theatre — and the Roxy is in better condition and has a lot more potential.”

Mr Fox, who spoke to owner David Kingston, said the group planned to ask councillors to support a land trade with Mr Kingston so it could be “given back to the community”.

But Mr Kingston states the total revamp of the theatre without the office tower is “unviable”.


The Roxy is an Art Deco theatre, similar to the Capitol Theatre in the city.
“The desire of the National Trust and the Roxy Lyric Theatre group to convert the Roxy into a two level theatre is totally unviable.

“I will also consider reverting to the existing fully approved use of reopening the Roxy as a major pub (or) nightclub. While that will be a very valuable business, it will be sub optimal for the Parramatta community.”

The action groups proposal will be presented to councillors along with Arts Minister Don Harwin.

That picture of the proposed development does my head in, there's a multi storey carpark behind there that has stairwells that smell like stale piss, and a dodgy kebab shop to the right where the trees are.

In Melbourne they have done a lot of similar re-developments that keep the street front facade of classic building while putting up something big and modern in behind.  If done well it can be very nice.

It is only about 2kms from both Rooty Hill and Doonside Stations so should be pretty accessible by bus and car, assuming there would be additional services if a licensed club was built.

That carpark with the smelly stairwells you speak of is slated for demolition. It is, at this stage, seemingly the preferred location for the new Parramatta underground station as part of the currently in planning City - Westmead Metro.

Once all these new transport options are constructed, getting to Parra will be a breeze.

 

- Park at Westmead and get a tram/train. Or walk through the park.

- Park at Camellia or Rydalmere and get the tram.

- Get the Metro to Parra directly.

- Get the Metro to Parramatta and transfer to the tram if you don't like walking to the stadium.

 

Granted, it's still about 7/8 years away before it's all completed. Light Rail in 2022 and Metro in 2027. Still, the future is looking good. Bit of inconvenience between now and then, but an A-League title or two and another couple of ACL Campaigns, plus, returning to the cities best stadium and I'm sure we could put up with the inconvenience of a lack of parking.

The other night after dinner, my missus and I went and got ice cream from Messina and had a walk around the stadium. Was awesome to see the two basketball courts absolutely packed with blokes playing some street ball, music jamming in the background. The playground out the front and gym set up is awesome. Very community oriented this stadium. Only thing missing is a futsal cage.
