Carns Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Have made their first signing. He seems like a good appointment considering his relative success with Bentleigh and knowledge of local players - assumedly both NPL and Aleague. EmMac 1

Hughesy Posted February 3, 2019 Posted February 3, 2019 I don’t trust this mob at all. Disaster incoming IMO.
mack Posted February 4, 2019 Author Posted February 4, 2019 There's a bit of talk on various NSL bitter twitter pages that their investors are backing away because of the falling housing market destroying the reason for this team in the first place (getting free land for development from the local council). Could be bullshit but when there's been so little public information it's hard to say either way what's going on. FFA heading for another disastrous expansion? StringerBellend 1

mack Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 Turns out the secret mysterious backers were the Chinese owners of English club Birmingham City. But they've pulled out of the West Melbourne project already and WMG leadership now trying to find new cash. I'd also assume this means the new stadium is kaput and they'll be stuck with 5000 fans playing at the AFL oval in Geelong.
Davo Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Good thing they didn't go with Canberra, Hobart or Wollongong and fished where the fish are... EmMac, Erdz, Unlimited and 6 others 6 3

mack Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 There's apparently a group of South Africans who might get involved if the free land for development sticks around.

Davo Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Western Athletic wins the name game for A-League newbies Quote Exhaustive polling is pointing heavily towards Western Athletic winning out as the official monicker of Melbourne’s latest addition to the A-League. An announcement at the end of this week will officially rubber-stamp Athletic as the successful entry, as well as reveal the club’s colours as green and black. Four potential names were proposed to fans in an extensive survey conducted by News Ltd across Victoria, with participants also given the option of adding their own to the mix. And it appears a hybrid has won out, with fans of the fledgling franchise opting to adopt the proposal of Western Melbourne Athletic - minus the word Melbourne. With the club’s eventual new stadium to be situated at Tarneit - 30km from Melbourne’s CBD - the over-riding sentiment from followers of the new entity was that the team will be outside the umbrella of Melbourne and it’s name should not necessarily be synonymous with the city. Western United FC, Westside Pride FC and Western Melbourne Warriors FC were also on the list but none appear to have struck a chord. The pieces of the puzzle are quickly falling into place for the team which will initially be based at Geelong’s Kardinia Park when they enter the fray next season. They have Greece international Panagiotis Kone in the bag as their marquee, with Wellington Phoenix’s Mark Rudan soon to be announced as head coach, assuming he can engineer an exit from the second year of his contract across the ditch. Western Sydney Wanderers’ Josh Risdon has also agreed terms, with the Socceroo out of contract at Wanderland and looking for a new challenge. The club have also been heavily linked with Melbourne City’s off-contract midfielder Luke Brattan as well as Wellington’s English defender Stephen Taylor. Phoenix CEO David Dome declined to comment when contacted by The World Game on Monday over the future of Rudan, whose stocks have soared since taking charge of the serial under-performers.
mack Posted February 11, 2019 Author Posted February 11, 2019 SST reckons it won't be Western Athletic. Hmmn

Erebus Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 He is quoted as saying "“I’m a hard worker who understands that the fans in the West of Melbourne want players who’ll give absolutely 100% for the shirt. I can’t wait to start doing that,” said Risdon," Fans? Shirt? When has he given 100% in the last 2 years? See ya. Such a disappointment. Tate to play the rest of the season regardless if Risdon is fit or not. Carns, alexd, sonar and 7 others 10
