Worse than Lambert Park?

So most of the NPL clubs play on synthetic pitches and may become a  issue.

I think the A-League regulations prohibit the use of synthetic pitches so grounds like Lambert Park, Lilys, King Tomislav etc would potentially be ruled out of a NSD.

Anyone know what the rules on surfaces are going to be?

Also, take the pitch issue as a matter of player safety from the PFA who negotiated that no A-League Womens game would be played on a synthetic pitch.

Wait, Lambert Park is synthetic? I thought it wasn't

Surely, the FA had further looked into this before taken submissions from these clubs?

According to 'A League Now' on Instagram, the APL is rumoured to be announcing two expansion teams tomorrow. Apparently Canberra and Auckland.

Canberra, very understandable.

Auckland… hmmm… this makes me think it’s the Sky TV money being quite lucrative for the APL to reject.

I think a NZ derby is good and will only increase the crowds and interest over there. If it's Auckland City, at least they are an established club with an existing fan base.

Canberra is a not a bad one.

Auckland is dumb - why are we promoting Kiwi teams over ours, to be honest I dont think Wellington should be in the comp either.

The next 2 after should 100% be from the 2nd division - just wait another year, or max 2.

I think they will get struggle to get anywhere near 25million - esp with the state the a-league is in.

100% agree with this........either Tassie or Wollongong would of been a better option.

Tassie the population is too small. They need teams that will generate more interest than Cows and WU are right now. Auckland I'm a bit meh about but understand wanting a derby (but agree with not a big fan of promoting NZ football over Australian teams). The Gong would be great but if it isn't the Wolves it'll fail and you can't bring them in without pissing off all the other NPL/NSL clubs.

Sky Sports NZ pay heaps of money for TV rights when their local pro teams in NRL and NBL are participating and I think if Sky Sports were to pay money for the rights of the A-League, they would want another NZ team, preferably Auckland which is their largest pay TV market.

I agree about the licensing fee, both MacArthur and WU paid about $20m for the licensing fee.

As for Auckland, I also agree its the wrong choice but again, Sky TV would be offering more cash for the A-League rights to have a 2nd NZ team. But unlike MacArthur and WUN, Auckland City are already an established club that would already have the established supporters base in Auckland and already NZ Football is on a massive rise.

What happens when there's a Wellington Auckland GF in Sydney?

You get a bumper crowd, that's what. More kiwis here than in New Zealand, aren't there?

Canberra love it. Family are already planning the away trip we have friends down there that will go.

Auckland addresses the Wellington issue. If you have Wellington they need some sort of support so Auclland makes sense. I am also thinking Sky sports gets lots of views and provides a lot of money to A-league so its one that you just take because its for the good of the league.

BTW Auckland as a city is meh. Wellington is better  😁

Māoris and Polynesians don’t like football, despite their European ancestories, not sure if the Pakeha’s themselves like football either.

Hopefully the GF deal with Sydney will be over at the end of the 3 seasons and will never happen with any city ever again.

Exactly - play every grand final in a regional town with a maximum population of 500 people

Would Auckland City want to join the league? Seems like they have a pretty sweet setup at the moment qualifying for the Club World Cup every year.

Wouldn't be surprised if they created a new club there.

I might be a bit against the grain, but I have no issue with NZ teams in our comp. I actually think the Nix add something to.our comp. Far more than  WU do.

I actually think they have it right this time. I hope teams 15-16 come promoted from a new 2nd Div after these two.

The sceptic in me says that the APL is motoring ahead with this in anticipation of pressure shortly down the track to boost the size of their competition with 2nd division teams. However, I applaud this move (the more the merrier) and I'm happy with their geographic choices too. You do wonder how the inclusion of another NZ team will affect the prospect of promotion/relegation down the track. I don't get how a license is worth $25M though. Pay $25M for the right to lose a couple of $M per year.

Yeah I don’t think there is anywhere else more viable than Auckland or Canberra.

anyhere else you are just making another Macarthur or WU.

I don’t really see the need to expand I assume it’s just to get some more money, 25 million seems a lot of dollars to setup teams that unless they good from the start will probably been struggling for crowds like most of the league.
