The Wanderers take on a North Shore Mariners side in desperate need for club championship points on Saturday night.
KICK-OFF: Western Sydney Wanderers v North Shore Mariners. 7.00pm at Blacktown Football Park

After clinching a 3-3 draw in dramatic circumstances on the Central Coast last Sunday the Wanderers are back at Blacktown Football Park this weekend to host bottom-placed North Shore Mariners.

Although Trevor Morgan’s side failed to take full advantage of Sydney FC’s loss to Fraser Park in Round 22 the Red & Black now hold a two point advantage over the Sky Blues and will be out to extend that gap with a win tonight.

With Sydney set to play host to Central Coast Mariners at Lambert Park later in the evening, the Wanderers could potentially open up a five point advantage over their second-placed rivals should a victory by followed by the Sky Blues lose to their Mariners opponents.

It would set up what looks to be an increasingly definitive final weekend of the regular season in which the Wanderers host Sydney at Popondetta Park in late August – but before that, the competition leaders must focus on a slew of tricky fixtures.

Dates with Marconi and Mounties Wanderers are set to follow the encounter with the Northbridge Oval outfit, leaving Morgan’s men with little room for error in Saturday’s important clash.

And despite Joe Haywood’s side on course for relegation as things stand, his North Shore team have been commendably resolute in the last month where the competition cellar dwellers have, somewhat outstandingly, collected four consecutive 0-0 stalemates against Bankstown Berries, Fraser Park, Central Coast and Mounties Wanderers.

With this steely streak only ended by a 3-1 loss to Marconi last week and with the Mariners fighting for their competition lives, the Wanderers will have it all to do at Blacktown Football Park.

Damn not the greatest result against the cellar dwellers

Cellar dwellers? I'm surprised tbh. I went to the away game against North Shore. They were a tough opponent and we won by a single late Lachlan Scott goal. Match couldn't gone either way. Symes made a couple of really good saves to keep a clean sheet

Was a sub standard performance from the lads tonight.

Unable to break down Rich Mariners 5 man back line & created very little in attack.

Cameron Devlin who anchors our midfield hasn't played the last 2 games.

He hobbled off after a bad challenge from behind, in the game against Frazer Park. Scans have subsequently confirmed a fractured metatarsal & his season would appear to be over.

5 other WSW players have been called into the Young Socceroos camp this week., Shabow, Scott, Bandiera, Baccus & Maia.

Big shame, this guy has a massive heart and is a real talent. great first touch and speed. very creative layer, hope he recovers fast. That A-Hole for Frazer park, number 15 was an idiot the way he was going in on tackles..

Wanderers drop points against North Shore in NPL

The Western Sydney Wanderers have lost the outright lead on the PS4 NPL2 table after dropping points against a determined North Shore Mariners outfit at Blacktown Football Park.
A 1-1 draw against the bottom-placed Mariners mean that the Red & Black are now equal first in the NPL with Sydney FC sitting above them on goal difference.

While the match ended in a frustrating draw, it actually looked very positive for the Wanderers early on with 16-year-old Ramy Najjarine scoring a brilliant goal in only the 14th minute.

Najjarine was on hand to collect a deflected free kick and smashed the ball into the top corner from a very wide position to open the scoring.

Unfortunately for the winger, Najjarine appeared to injure himself in the act of scoring and was substituted before half time.

Apart from the goal, the first 45 minutes was very quiet with the Wanderers struggling to get through a well-drilled Mariners outfit who were sitting with five players in the backline.

The second half opened in dramatic fashion with North Shore awarded a penalty for a hand ball in the box, which they duly converted through  Michael Cole.

It opened the gates for a slightly more free-flowing match with goalkeeper Matt Symes forced into saving a decent Mariners’ shot soon after before the Wanderers’ Tariq Maia and Brenton Fox both had attempts to take the lead thwarted.

Despite some chances in the second half, the match failed to become a spectacle with both teams realistically needing more than the draw.

Next week sees Wanderers travel to Bossley Park to take on Marconi Stallions in what is now a very crucial match.

Western Sydney Wanderers 1 (Ramy Najjarine 14’)
